The Funtastic World Of Hanna Barbera - Movie Edition

OK - trhis is probably hard, but I was trying to think of all the movies that were produced under Hanna Barbera starring thier characters. Specifically the ones that were the TV produced movies for thier old Funatastic World Of Hanna Barbera segments.


Now correct me if I'm wrong. The only ones actually released in theatres or were feature length were:

The Flintstones Meet The Jetsons
The Man Called Flintstone
Jetsons: The Movie (Doesn't Air on CN)
Hey There It's Yogi Bear! (being the very first one)

Now the rest of thier movies, if I'm correct were:

Now I know that there are probably tons more cause HB was prolific like that....What I wanna know is (for those that can remember), did the TV ones air in a special slot on Saturday Mornings, what happened to the ones that CN DOESN'T air, like who has possesion of them - specifically Jetsons: The Movie and the two Flintsones movies (considering thats two of Cartoon networks bigger properties you think they'd have aired it by now and I know The Disney Channel USED to air it years ago, but it hasnt been seen on TV since)

And more specifically - which ones from that list am I missing?

I can't think of any you're missing. However, as a lifelong JQ fan, lemme just say that it's a GOOD thing these have been consigned to oblivion. EVERYONE was out of character, the designs were sorta ugly, and the plots were just plain nonsensical, with too many Capt. Planet overtones (maybe because they were done by the same studio as the eps of CP at that time). Sorry, but seeing those listed just brought that back to me.

In the sixties, the first two HB movies came out, theatrically, and they were:

- Hey There, It's Yogi Bear!
- The Man Called Flintstone

The 70s and early 80s had many specials, but only a few Christmas specials aired on the network, two particular specials, Yogi's First Christmas and Flintstones Christmas, are more or less an annual event on Cartoon Network.

For the latter half of the 80s, Hanna-Barbera had a series of films called HB Superstar Theatre (or something like that). All of the Superstar films have aired on Cartoon Network and they are the following:

- Yogi Bear and the Flight Of The Spruce Goose
- Yogi's Great Escape
- Yogi Bear and the Invasion Of The Space Bears
- Yogi The Easter Bear
- Top Cat And The Beverly Hills Cats
- Scooby Doo And The Ghoul School
- Scooby Doo Meets The Boo Brothers
- Scooby Doo And The Reluctant Werewolf
- The Good, The Bad, And Huckleberry Hound
- Rockin' With Judy Jetson
- The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones

In the late 80s, two theatrical films came out. One was based on a classic series and featured the last major performance by a classic voice artist, Mel Blanc. The other wasn't done by Hanna-Barbera, but it did have a lot of character designs based on the HB series. And they were:

- Pound Puppies and the Legend of Big Paw
- Jetsons: The Movie (distributed by Universal, it was the last HB production to feature the swirling star logo prior to Powerpuff Girls)

Prior to The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest's premiere on the Turner nets, a pair of JQ-based films aired in the early 90s. The first one, Jonny's Golden Quest, has only been seen on USA Network, and remains a USA Film created and produced by Hanna-Barbera. JQ VS The Cyber Insects was a TNT Original Picture produced by HB, so, you know it did air on Cartoon Network once.

And only once.

About the mid-90s, Hanna-Barbera had a creative streak of sorts with their older characters and having fun with Halloween. One particular HB special was based on a candy campaign and actually had the studio experiment with 3D animation. The name of this special escapes me. The other, The Halloween Tree, was based on a Ray Bradbury story (the author also provided the narration) and was a very well-crafted tale about how other cultures celebrate the day of the dead.

Three Flintstones specials, I Yabba Dabba Do! (the marriage of Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm), Hollyrock-A-Bye Baby (the birth of the Rubble twins Roxy and Chip), and A Flintstones' Christmas (the Filntstones adopted a street urchin), all of which aired only on ABC, seemed like a revival of the Flintstones, but, um, it didn't come into fruition, as a couple of years later, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm were back as little kids in A Flintstones Christmas Carol.

Prior to the retelling of the classic Dickens tale, HB brought back Shaggy and Scooby-Doo as storytellers in Arabian Nights. It was one of the last Hanna-Barbera films.

It's all Cartoon Network Studios now. Somehow, I think I've missed something.

I know for a fact that Sci-Fi Channel has the broadcast rights for the Jetsons movie, I saw it on less than a year ago.

I know this is sort of off topic in this thread, but does Powerpuff Girls still use the H-B star logo for the new episodes? Or do they use a Cartoon Network Studios logo now?

BTW, wasn't there a movie/TV special about Casper's first Christmas? Casper the Friendly Ghost's house is going to be torn down, and Yogi and all his H-B animals buddies help him out. There was also another Christmas movie about a dog and a mouse delivering a letter to Santa (I think the dog's name was Goober). It reused the "But one is the real Santa Claus" song used in a few other Hanna-Barbera specials. In fact, they reused the song three or so times, I think. They also reused the "Holiday Jolly-day" song.

Oh yes, I almost forgot. Hanna-Barbera also did a made for TV Alice and Wonderland movie. I remember hearing it used a few popular characters (like Fred and Barney as the Jaberwocky, etc). It was called "Alice In Wonderland or What's a Nice Kid Like You Doing In A Place Like This?"

thanks dude - for some reason thats been bothering me for a while because I could never figure out how the HB movies were set up.

I still dont remember EVER seeing the Top Cat movie air on CN though. Seen clips in promos, but never the movie. That list also explains several things I could never figure out.

I NEVER did see Legend Of Big Paw, but I wonder why CN never airs it. They still have the rights to Pound Puppies since it was in the HB Library.

And from what I hear about the JQ movies, maybe it is for the best that they dont air from all the flack I've heard about them :P

I cant think of the Candy one but I THINK I know what youre talking about.

And I'd actually like to see The Halloween Tree again. I remember TBS used to air this perennially on Halloween, and then suddenly they just...didnt...


But the two I really want to see are the movies when Bamm-Bamm and Pebbles get married and have twins...Curse me for ever taping over them -______-

And if Sci-Fi has Jetsons: The Movie then no wonder - they're skinflints when it comes to relinquishing thier liscenses. :P

Thanks Nem - i appreciate it. I cant think of any more besides the shorter random and holiday specials. I know there were SEVERAL Smurfs one - Smurfs Valentine, Smurfic Games (Olympics), two Smurfs Christmas specials and something else. If I'm right - The Smurfs and The Magic Flute (the actual movie) was not produced by HB.

I dont have ANY idea where the Casper one fits in, but i think theres one more movie taking off of the Yogi's Ark premise, airing before the actual Yogi's Ark show premiered. I think it was called Yogi's Ark Lark or something stupid like that. Yogi's Ark is probably the worst in the Yogi series anyway IMO. -___-

CN has aired Top Cat and the Beverly Hills Cats before, I saw it on Cartoon Theater not too long ago. I don't have an exact date, but it aired as a "double feature" with another movie on a Sunday afternoon.

First of all, the new "Powerpuff Girls" eps have the legendary Hanna-Barbera 'swirling star' logo like they've always had, but now below the HANNA-BARBERA CARTOONS label, it has "An AOL Time Warner Company", to reflect the latest merger.
And by the way, it's that updated labeling I will try to splice on at the end of all forthcoming "Cattanooga Cats" hour-long shows on Cartoon Network's "Boomerang Spotlight Year Shows". :cool: :bosko:
