What comic strips do you like or dislike to read?

Me, there are several: Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes, Liberty Meadows, and Big Nate.

Garfield has been something I've read since I was born, and one of the few strips who still can make zany look funny. Probably my favorite strip in papers right now.

Calvin and Hobbes is my fav strip of all time, period. Could combine action, humor, and emotion all into one. Still read the books all the time. If only it were still around....

Liberty Meadows is one I do not get to see much, but I love it. It's a very well drawn strip, and the characters' personalities work well off one another.

Big Nate is another strip I like but do not get to read much....I love this because it is a sort of successor Calvin with Nate's bad luck. His drawings on his world are good as well.

One strip I hate to say I do not like anymore is Foxtrot....that strip relies WAY too much on simple sight gags, and the strip is so simplly drawn that you need to look close to get the gags. Sunday strips are often one big panel of a continous drawing and another small panel telling a bad punch line.

Duplex, Liberty Meadows, Overboard, Calvin and Hobbes, Ernie, Citzen Dog, Frumpy the Clown, and Fox Trot.

I have to say that the Kansas City Star has a crappy comics page. The St Paul Pioneer Press had the best comics page ever, and featured many of the cutting edge comics that other news papers would not touch, such as Overboard (about pirates) and Ernie and Duplex, and Citizen Dog. The KC star doesn't have anything cool like that. I have settle for book collections of these strips now.

And yes, Calvin and Hobbes is a great strip.

I also like reading comic strip collections from the 20s, 30s and 40s. Little Orphan Annie, Terry and the Pirates, Little Nemo...

The Boondocks....I use to hate it, but it has become very good recently. I love thier "What's Wrong with the Picture?" series...

...For Better or for Worse is excellent as well. It touches subjects other supposedly emotional strips wouls not touch with a ten-foot pole...(such as April nearly drowning)

I hate the one panel 'kid' strips such as Kid City or Beakman's World...just take up space... :mad:

Peanuts is good....I like the series where Charlie Brown becomes Mr. Sack and then Camp President...:)

comic strips were actually my first love, i must admitt. before i wanted to be an animator, comic book artist, or anything, i wanted to have my own comic strip. i use to make my own strip in elementary school, and from there i suppose i set my sights higher with animation, comic book art, and fine art. but i still would love my own strip. what about you guys who are inspiring artists, what impact has comic strips had on you?

Mutts - One of the most adorable strips out there.

Funky Winkerbean - Tom Batiuk has a way with humor and tugging at the heartstrings.

Zits - It's so easy for me to relate to Jeremy.

Randolph Itch, 2 a.m. - I just love the ironies.

Calvin and Hobbes was the best ever and Farside was next, but they're both out of print, so I'm not gonna count them. Those two guys knew when to quit, unlike Jim Davis and others.

Dilbert- This is the best one running in the Oklahoman. Not always funny, but always has a sardonic element of the truth.

Mother Goose and Grim- kinda worn out, but every now and then it's really funny.

The Grizwell's- anyone else read this? Not always good, but sometimes has a nice bit of gross out humor.

Arlo and Janice- I hate to admit that I like this one, but sometimes they hit upon a great subject that really connects with me.

Calvin and Hobbes is my all time favorite. I just go back and re-read the books over and over. It was a sad day when it ended.

As for current comics I like Dilbert, Sherman's Lagoon, Heart of the City, Curtis, and maybe a couple others I'm forgetting. I also used to hate Boondocks, but I think it's very good now.

Oh yeah and I really, really dislike Rose is Rose. Absolute crap. But the worst ever was the Rugrats comic, I dunno if that's still around, it's not in the philly daily news any more, but it sucked royally. The jokes never made any sense.

...dunno. Maybe it's a fashion statement? A lack of a chance to iron it out? :) Being in a cubicle means you don't get to do much else...

I really would have to agree about the rugrats strip. It's another cheap merchandise gimmick for the rats...too many things are being added to the Rugrats, both plot wise and merchandise wise.

I can't stand the Rugrats. My sister loves that show and pretty much buys everything she can of it. Fights happen over this quite a lot at my house.

...was good until Dill came. He is now just an accesory. He'd be a lot better if he could speak; frankly, he was at his best in the All Growned Up special. Kimmi's alright, I guess...

....the show had heart, soul, feeling, call it what you like, but as soon as the first movie came it vanished...

Anyway...

I like For Better or Worse, Garfield (Although the quality has degraded lately, and I think someone mentioned it already and good for you!), Fox Trot, Non Sequiter, Rose is Rose (I'll admit it...I think it's sometimes simple and sweet), Dilbert and Zits.

-I think Garfield actually has gone UP in quality. There was a time when the art, the jokes, were awful....but now it has really picked up! :D

FOXTROT has SERIOUSLY declined in quality...seems like everyone in the strip are stick figures...and you know about the rest of my rant from my first post on the topic.

I'll take your word on Cathy-do not even bother to try SEEING it on the paper...

Zits, in my opinion, is excellent, and Jeremycould warrent enough humor and character to be a teenaged Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes!
