View Full Version : Re: To Gak and bozo
Argus,
I read your thread. I think that's a very cool idea. I was in a conversation with Clay Croker (the voice of Zorak and Moltar for Space Ghost Coast to Coast) a few weeks ago. He is a big Popeye fan, and he was recommending I speak with "Officer" Don Kennedy. He hosted the Popeye Club in the Atlanta area in the 70's. Mr. Kennedy still does voice work and some on camera work for Aqua Teen Hunger Force and the Brak Show. When I first pitched my ideas for the Popeye Show, I wanted to do a hosted show, but my budget did not allow. I spent money on restoring which most of the other shows don't deal with. But with an anniversary coming up, maybe I can talk them into a special. I also heard a rumour that the timeslot for The Popeye Show will be much earlier by the end of the year. I was sad to hear about Sgt. Jack.
Thanks,
bozo

Now that is wonderful news, The Popeye Show certainly deserves an earlier timeslot! Maybe CN could actually promote the show with a commercial or two, too? That would be nice.

Cartoon Network should clearly promote The Popeye Show whatever time it's on, as it's the best series currently airing on Cartoon Network, hands down.....But that is great news that CN is starting to wake up and put this show on a prime time schedule later this year.

Ohh, I like to hear that! Could Popeye Show get specialized bumpers? I think it is using the same "We'll Be Right Back" bumpers of Late Night Black and White and Freakazoid right now.

Nah, the Popeye Show has always had specialized bumpers. So it's all taken care of. :)
<<I spent money on restoring which most of the other shows don't deal with.>>
And it was money well spent. The restored cartoons look fabulous.
Something I've wondered, Bozo. Does Warner have the original negatives for the Fleischer/Famous Studios Popeyes in its possession? I've wondered whether Paramount gave the originals to AAP or if they just supplied them with dupe negs and retained the originals themselves.
Mike
Hey Mike,
To my knowledge those negs do not exist. I doubt they gave the original negs to AAP, either, but all of my restorage footage has come from independent sources outside the company.

Too bad. I guess that puts limitations on how good a lot of the color cartoons in particular will ever be able to look. Some of them are terribly faded. Thanks, Bozo.

IIRC, someone (Jerry Beck?) once told me all the color Popeye negatives still exist at UCLA. Is this correcT?
I have heard that about Warner's LT & MM's...I'm not sure about the Popeyes...It would be nice if it is true...The audio clippage is the biggest problem with restoring the color Popeyes.

Clippage with the end titles, I presume (and the openings on the three Flesicher specials, plus "We're On Our Way to Rio" and "Tops in the Big Top").
On the ones where Sharples carried over the closing music into the end titles, restoration would be really tough -- unless you can find an NTA public domain print that used the same muscial ending -- while the others where the music ends with the iris out would be easier to match up with music from other cartoons (again, check out the audio on the NTA and even some of the Harveytoons PD prints, since Winston re-used a lot of his closing music).

Bozo, do the original nitrate 35mm prints for the Popeye 2 reelers still exits and if so have they been restored and will any of them be featured in season 3 of the Popeye episodes?
Nelson, if those prints do exist, they are with some collector somewhere. Cartoons were apparently a pretty low priority (to the bigger film studios) in the past and I can only assume with Popeye's ownership being so spread out (one company owning the character and various other companies owning various cartoons) that the Popeyes became an even lower priority. I've discussed the 2 reelers with Jerry Beck a number of times and we always seem to come to a dead end. Folks are still looking out for them and I hope they surface sometime.
J Lee, thanks for the Harveytoons idea because those titles you mentioned (especially Rio) have got my goat.
Oh, speaking of goats, I'm still working on The Hungry Goat you guys...

...about three or four frames at a time, I'll bet. Good luck, that's got to be a lot of work. :)
