"The Iron Giant," considered by many as an animated masterpiece, premiered on Cartoon Network for the first time ever with a 24.5-hour marathon with increased ratings across the board. The movie, a heartwarming tale about a young boy in the 1950s who finds a gargantuan alien robot that crashes into his life, showcased 14 straight telecasts stretching from 7:00 P.M. Tuesday [July 2] to 7:30 P.M. Wednesday [July 3].
Highlights of the performance of "The Iron Giant" against the same time period last year Include: The 8:45 p.m. presentation on Tuesday night earned the highest ratings for Kids 2-11 (5.4), Kids 6-11 (5.4), and Adults 18-34 (1.1), while the 10:30 p.m. telecast proved the highest-rated for tweens 9-14 (4.6, up 35%). The Iron Giant's telecasts ranked as the highest-rated program for the week in Kids 6-11, Tweens 9-14 and Adults 18-34. The entire overall event saw ratings increases with 18% in Tweens 9-14 (2.6), 6% with Kids 6-11 (3.5) and 3% with Kids 2-11 (3.2). Delivery increases across the 24-hour period were even more impressive, with a 24% improvement with Tweens 9-14 (477,000), 19% improvement with kids 6-11 (658,000) and 18% improvement with kids 2-11 (1,002,000), while Household rating (1.5) increased by 7% and delivery (1,252,000) grew by 23%.
Meanwhile, the "Powerpuff Girls" proved their ratings punch with their highly rated three-hour mini-marathon at 8:00-11:00 A.M. on Sunday, July 7. Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup capped off the weekend of their motion picture release as the series scored and delivered a double-digit ratings increase against the same time period the previous year. Boys 9-14 saw a whopping 132% delivery increase (283,000), scoring a 3.0 rating (up 114%). The Tweens 9-14 delivery (422,000) grew by 61% and ratings (2.3) increased by 53%, while the Kids 6-11 delivery (650,000) improved by 42%, with ratings (3.5) rose by 30%.
Finally, "Hamtaro," Cartoon Network's newest half-hour animé import series from Japan, continued pouring in its performance with a fifth straight week of double-digit delivery and ratings gains for its Monday-Friday at 7:00 A.M. timeslot. The series marked its highest draw-in with boys 9-14, rising 146% in delivery (214,000) and 120% in ratings (2.2). Tweens 9-14 saw an impressive growth, up 64% in delivery (246,000) and 44% in ratings (1.3). And kids 6-11 were close behind with a 20% increase in delivery (313,000) and a 13% gain in ratings (1.7).
