If you're needing something to watch this evening, on American Movie Classics (http://www.amctv.com) there's a documentary titled "Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel." It premieres at 9 PM CST/10 PM EST and is repeated at midnight CST and 1 PM EST.

With all the discussion of the beloved Mammy Two-Shoes from the Tom & Jerry series and of stereotype gags in general, I thought others might also be interested in this.

A fablous actress Hattie McDaniel she was, and it's really worth watching.

NOTE:
Hattie can also be seen in some of the "Little Rascals two reel comedies now airing on AMC

I've been looking forward to it since I saw the commercial last week. I sort of feel sorry for her, being a symbol of the black mammy steriotype.

Hattie McDaniel always said this during her years in Hollywood.

"I would rather play a housemaid and make alot of money, than to be a real housemaid, and not make anything in my life"

God Bless Hattie:) :) :) She was one great woman, and set standards for African Americans in Hollywood in years to come.

I can't wait to see this documentary. I also plan to tape it. Hattie McDaniel was a great actress who complemented each and every movie she made. I loved her in "Song Of The South" and of course "Gone With The Wind". I even loved her as Buckwheat's mom in "Anniversary Trouble". Hopefully they will explore more about her than just her Mammy portrayals. I'd like to hear more about her personal life, etc.

One of my favorite Hattie McDaniel performances is from Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943). She sings "Ice Cold Katie" in a production number. There was a very short clip from it in "Beyond Tara," and the clip ended before the number gets really good.

One of my favorite moments from Gone With The Wind is when Scarlett is supposed to be in mourning for one of her dead husbands. She's wearing a fairly sexy black dress and drinking. Hattie, as Mammy, says, "Mr. Butler is downstairs calling for you but I told him you is prostrate with grief."
