Well, I suppose something was bound to happen this July 4th. For those of you who are unaware, like I was up until ten minutes ago, there's been a minor crisis at the Los Angeles Airport. Seems there was a shootout, three people shot, two of those wounded, one dead, and the gunman was also killed. Happened in front of the El Al ticket counter, which is the Israeli Airlines. The Israeli security guards were the ones smart enough to shoot the gunman. But there saying, so far, that it seems completely un-terrorist related. Guess we'll know more as further things develop. Although LAX is basically swarming with poor people who can't leave, I'm going to enjoy the rest of this day of celebration and watch Gosford Park with my parents....who are starting it right now without me!

Yeah, I just heard about that. Plus there seems to have been a small plane crash in an amusement park. The city and casualties escape me right now.

Yeah, just heard about that too once the movie was over. Looks like a small, two person kind of plane crashed and basically landed near a lake and on a picni table. As far as LAX, I find it amusing how one channel will report 4 people wounded, and another will say 7. I was amazed at one reporter who stated "there are two victims, one being the gunman". Correct me if I'm wrong...but a gunman should never be counted as a victim! At the moment, besides the gunman, there are two dead people, and at least 4 wounded....though like I said, another station had it as 7 wounded, go figure. Supposedly the guy, whose ethnicity they have yet to mention, was shouting obscenities and then fired at people. El Al, the Israeli Airline, is considered one of the most secure areas, I mean, they have their own El Al security guards! But this plane crash adds another element, somewhat random that it is, to this day. I thought that one bad thing, terrorist related or not, would happen on the 4th, but not two.

Yeah, it's all over the news. I swear, this world just keeps getting crazier all the time. I know that this is bad and everything, but it would be nice if the media would stop over doing this, and just get on with the day. I'm certain this isn't the only thing that happened today.

Just a small update: The plane crash is now being called an accident. For some reason, it's sort of a relief to hear that, even though it's still a sad event.

You know you're out of the current events loop when you think "LAX Shooting" is a thread about Lacrosse. :o
Well, what happened was terrible, and my hearts go out to all of the victims, even if I'm uninformed.

Having lived only about 4-5 blocks away from LAX this one seems to hit really close to home. The coincidences about this attack and attacks on this airline in the past seem to indicate that this was not a random shooting. The shooter has already linked his attacks back to the Koran - leaving a note on his car that informed investigators to "read the Koran".
As for counting the shooter in the death total this type of reporting seems to happen with CNN a lot when they are dealing with homocide bombings in Israel - often stating "12 Israelis and one Palestinian were killed in the attack".
I agree completely the people that commit these acts should never be included in the death toll as it makes them look like a victim instead of the murderers that they are.

Apparently, they are calling this an isolated incident but also have not eliminated this as an act of terrorism. The shooter was an Egyptian man who was living in the U.S.

It's one of Los Angeles' biggest airports--maybe THE biggest, I'm not sure. Mr. Happy may not have had official connections to terrorit organizations like Al Queda or the Ku Klux Klan or the Jehova's Witnesses ( ;) ), but he exhibited terroristic behavior...so I'd say the label is correct. "Terroristic behavior" doesn't even require a gun or any sort of biohazard agent like anthrax--if you mail/e-mail someone an ordinary letter containing even a tiny, veiled hint of a threat, that counts. If those agents had been Americans, the gunman would have been mollycoddled by the system and slapped on the wrist. He buggered around with Israelis, however, who do not pussyfoot around, and was summarily executed like a rabid dog. Comendable.
As for the plane crash--before the Emergency Number Bombings, it would have been considered a mere sad occurrence. Now it's an occassion for tragedy, suspicion, and ragged nerves....
