Well, what store do you prefer? Hollywood..or Blockbuster? I like Blockbuster more for various reasons..the main one being:
Blockbuster charges like $30 for their used games. Hollywood will charge twice as much on their used games..so you could just go get a new copy for that much!

Hastings. They're a great chain in the mid-west that combines video rentals with book, music and software sales. Truly groovy.

hollywood has much better movie selection. much better horror section, its takes up three full rows where block bosters on has one row. thats the main reason i go, i dont really play vidio games any more, kinda sad if you think about it

I prefer HOLLYWOOD video more! Why? The store in my town just revamped, updated, and added a TON more DVD's to their selection. They have a 5 day rental period for their DVD's and if you bring back the ones that have been out for a month the next day, you get a dollar credit on your next rental! I end up paying $2.79 for DVD rental versus $3.79! I know Blockbuster has the "Guranteed it's in or it's free" policy too, but I find myself getting a lot free DVD rentals from Hollywood with their policy. It's very nice. There are just too many Blockbusters around and not enough Hollywoods.

Video Den. A Blockbuster moved in town nearby, so they have been slashing prices like crazy. Everything is dirt cheap!! Problem is, they're going out of business because of the Blockbuster. When Video Den goes away, I'll be going to Blockbuster. The selection at Video Den is good, but Blockbuster has more copies.
There are no Hollywood Video stores here.

Blockbuster!!! Why? Well, part of it is just habit. The Blockbuster near me has been around longer than the Hollywood Video. Also, i don't rent a lot of movies or video games, so the ones i want are usually there.

AAAAAAGGGGHHHHH....IT'S BLOCKBUSTER !!!! Not BlockbusterS !!!! AAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Sorry, that's just my pet peeve when people pluralize names that should not be. I used to work for Mercantile Bank and the branch manager always answered the phone, "Mercantile Banks." I hated it, hated it, hated it! And I hate it when I am counting down a til at the video store and see people write checks out to "Blockbusters." DO THEY SEE AN S AT THE END OF OUR NAME???

There is a video store in Washington (the state) that is nothing but DVDs and they have their store designed to look like a back stage of a movie lot. VERY COOL. I wish there were more of them around.

Blockbuster, because we don't have a hollywood near where I live. Plus the used games are cheap.

Blockbuster, only because I buy a lot of previewed tapes there, and it's right next door to my place of work. So I can wander in there anytime, on or off the clock :p

Block Buster is a complete bastard when it comes to overdue movies. On the 21st, I rented a video to watch at my friends house, and accidentally left it there. So for a week and a half, Blockbuster left threatening messages on my answering machine. She finally returned it on Saturday.
Hollywood video lets you pay late fees at your earliest convenience.

I was just at Blockbuster (and the mall eventually) today, and so I'll just say it's my pick by simple habbit. It's somewhat close by, but I wouldn't use that term like it's in the nearby neighborhood or something. But it's closer than the Hollywood video that's closest. Couple towns away I think.
My sister's been getting those "threatening" phone calls too! (long story) They leave a message on your machine of that recorded chopped up voice (you know the kind) about what you still have out. I'm glad she's on a different named account than I am, because I don't want them thinking I'm like her. NO way.

I don't have a membership to any of them, I'd rather by a previewed VHS for 4.99 or DVD for 9.99 than have to hassle with them over late fees...

Another reason my friends and I always referred to them as "Ballbuster."
Best video store I ever found was Vis-Art in North Carolina. Huge, eclectic selection ranging current releases to cult favorites (only store I've ever seen that stocked opera performances). Low rates for long rental periods. Didn't carry any games, but since I don't play 'em, didn't bother me a bit.

I suppose this doesn't apply to cartridges, but most of the cd games are so terribly scratched by the time they go on sale, that they're useless. In fact, I know 2 people who have switched their damaged Final Fantasy discs with those from Blockbuster.

I have heard those auto messages BB leaves...I'd hardly call them threatening! It's not like they are mobsters!
I do think BB is better with their late fees now, where they charge you for the rental period again rather than per day. 3.99 for five more days sure beats 2.99 per day. Why anybody would get upset over that I have no idea. Yeah, it sucks to pay 3.99 when you return it six hours late, but you sure won't be complaining if you forget about it and bring it back ten days late and only owe 7.98 compared to near thirty bucks!

My local Blockbuster ain't too bad but I prefer still Jumbo. Jumbo just has more variety. And are a helluva lot cheaper. Athough I do make a point to pick up Blockbuster's monthly pamphlets on new movies being released.

Have you picked up those pamphelts recently, DG? I have to ask, cuz my store doesnt' even get them sent to them anymore, and I've had a lot of customer complaints about it.

Hollywood. Somewhat better selection, 5-day rentals, and they're always sending me those "Rent 3 movies/videogames for 99 cents each" coupons ;)

Your lucky, DG. My Blockbuster stoped puting them out for some reason.

As soon as I walked through the front door, my mother handed me some Blockbuster letter. Again, my friend lied, saying she returned the video when in actuality, it is sitting on her bedroom floor. Since it is over 12 days late, Blockbuster said they have turned the matter over to a collection agency. I think it's absurd that one's entire line of credit can be ruined from one overdue movie. That is why I am boycotting Blockbuster from here on out. I urge you all to do the same.

Well..it's your friends fault, not blockbusters. Blockbuster just wants there video back. It's your friends irresponsibility for not taking a movie back that she obviously had enough time to pick up, but not take back. It doesn't make sense.....

I picked Blockbuster. I used to rent stuff there many years ago and my family still goes there sometimes.
I don't think I've ever been to a Hollywood Video, so I don't know how they would compare.

The collection agency just sends out the post cards and does the auto phone calls for Blockbuster. You'd really have to let it go...for more than 12 days...before they put it on a credit report. I know, I work fot them. The collection agency just takes it out of the store's hand because Blockbuster can, by no means imaginable, take care of sending out all the post cards to people at store level. So they hired an agency to do it for them. Get over it. LOTS of big companies do that, but it doesn't mean you won't be able to buy a house now. Let it go and go...and yeah, it might show up on a credit report, but you'd have to let it go for quite a few months.

I didn't think my story was that difficult to follow. I rented a movie to watch at my friends house and I accedentally left it there. Yes, it is her fault for not returning it, and she is wrong for lying to me, but Blockbuster is also wrong for calling a collection agency. I don't appreciate your tone, Calhoun07. A person's line of credit is very important. It actually can prevent a person from taking out a mortgage, and affect the intrest rate on loans or credit cards. You are predisposed to siding with Blockbuster because you work for them.

Don't start a flame war over this, dude. I am not predisposed to them because I work for them, I just know the process of it. It doesn't ruin your credit to have a post card sent to you. All they are doing right now is trying to recover their money. It's not like they are trying to garnish your wages or charge it off on your credit card. That would take a whole lot more time than 12 days. You don't think you're not going to beable to buy a house now because you forgot about a late fee for 12 days? It just doesn't work that way. They haven't taken legal actions to collect that money from you in a way that would ruin your credit...yet.

You're right, beta is superior to VHS, and a lot of professionals will choose beta over VHS anyday. But if you are such a fan of quality for your movies, have you thoguth about a DVD player? What is your take on the format?
(hmmm....this would be a good discussion on the DVD Discussion board!)

I've never been to Hollywood Video. We usually go to Blockbuster's because of the "guarenteed to be there or else it's free!" policy. My mom is a Blockbuster lurker. She goes there all the time, and says things like "It's raining! Lots of people must be renting. Let's hit Blockbuster!" Then she checks the videos with the policy and if there's none there, she'll ask for the raincheck. She even tries to get my brother and me to do the same later, pretending we're not related  I never humor her though, I say if she does it too much, she'll ruin it for other people, and besides, why the heck does she need another of the same video?

Well, it can be, and the introductory recorders out now are kinda spendy, going into the couple grand range, but so did DVD players when they first came out. Give them a little bit of time and you will be able to record on them with ease. Digitial recording is a reality now in many different forms, so recording on DVD is only a small step away from being something affordable for the average consumer.

Yeah, I know customers like you!!!!! All I'm gonna say is customers, you gotta love them, but I sure don't have to like them! But, hey, the policy is the policy, so I suppose if you want to take advantage of it, go ahead! I put in a card at the grocery store to take a survey so I can get a fifty dollar gift certificate! Heck ya, I'm taking it if they give it to me!

The BlockBuster around my house is pretty cheesy. However, the one down-town is great, and they helped add some WB cartoons to my collection. In fact, they let you buy the videos for rent if you ask! Out of all the BlockBusters and Hollywood Videos I've been to, it's definitly Hollywood. I hate BlockBuster for buying VIDEO FACTORY, because when they did, they got rid of all the ZAPPERS! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boy, if those morons would've had those places open with the newest video game systems, they'd be swimming in cash. 50 cents to play any game you want, forever how long you want.... ah those were the days!

In this case, guess I'm slightly biased in favor of Hollywood, because it's so much closer to where I live. But there's one major thing against it: I can always find MST3K movies at Blockbuster, but never at Hollywood. Weird....
