Some notes about last night's Popeye show:

"Shaving Muggs": The Famous remake of "A Clean Shaven Man". This was the first time I had seen this in awhile (not since the old days of TNT). Bluto is pretty mean in this one (pouring gasoline and gunpowder on Popeye's face and lighting the "fuse" seemed a bit extreme... even for Bluto!). Olive falls for the bearded "Captain Van Dyke" at the end of this one, in the original she walked off with comic strip regular, Geezil. The red Paramount opening and closing looked like they were taken from "She-Sick Sailors".

"Popeye's Mirthday": I can't stand these later Popeyes where it seems all the nephews want to do is try to murder their Uncle Popeye (another example: "Gift of Gag"). Note that Popeye is down to three nephews in this one. There would only be two left by the time we got to "Patriotic Popeye".

And, finally, I almost have all the Famous Popeye cartoons... except for the WWII and the other politically incorrect ones ("Popeye's Pappy", "The Island Fling"). Anyone have any idea why the following don't seem to air on Cartoon Network:

"A Job For A Gob"
"Mess Production"
"Safari So Good"
"Spinach-Packing Popeye"
"Tar With a Star"

Did "Pipe Dreams" use DVNR? There were a few moments when the monkeys and other characters had broken-up outlines and colors that blended together, like when they were rubbing ther behinds with their tails on the train.

"Safari So Good" most likely has Popeye and Olive Oil, or Bluto in a jungle with a tribe of cannibals. Just a guess....

Nope, Popeye and Olive encounter a Blutolike Tarzan. I suppose PETA would object to all the animals turned into fur coats...

"A Job For A Gob"-Popeye and Bluto compete for a job as Olive's ranch hand. Nothing objectionable here.

"Mess Production"-basically "A Dream Walking" set in a factory. Significant for the first appearance of Olive's new hairdo. Co-written by Otto Mesmer. Nothing objectionable here.

"Safari So Good"-See above.

"Spinach-Packing Popeye"-a "cheater" that uses clips from the 2-reelers. Unlike every print of Ali Baba I've seen, the sound is in sync with the picture during the big fight scene. Nothing objectionable here.

"Tar With a Star" Newly appointed Sheriff Popeye takes on Wild Bill Bluto. Rather morbid gags (Ex. "Sheriff wanted to fill this vacancy"-a freshly dug grave), but otherwise nothing objectionable.

Droopy Leprechaun... Spike sees Droopy with a leprechaun hat, and confusing him for a real leprechaun, chases him throughout the picture. Towards the end, Spike is carried away by people who think he has mental problems. Inside the truck he is taken away in, he sees what I think is actually a real live leprechaun!

Pipe Dreams... This must be another annoying and long '30s MGM cartoon. This cartoon was released right before the first Captain and the Kids cartoon.
