One word: wow
Who ever this new writer is hats off to him!
The Clayface thing took me by surprise, I never expected it... a pretty niftly twist. And then, at the end it made me wonder- Was Clayface dead? Was that really Nora coming to visit? And why did it look like Bruce was hitting on Barbara? :shudder: And the BIGGEST question- was that Freeze in a whole body at the end?! So, is Freeze back to "normal"??? Hopefully the next issue with Freeze will tell (and hopefully we don't have to wait too long...
The animation could have been better, but it wasn't bad. Out of Five stars, I'd say animation is three and plot gets four. Am I allowed to do that? Oh well... Like I said, over all it was great, a refreashing story to liven up a downward spiral. Maybe there's hope yet. Anyway, that's my two cents. My suggestion is to get this one if you can, it's enjoyable.

I remember Jason Hall saying that this issue moves the characters ahead abit, and I think this was one of those moments. I personally woul dlike to see this happen. It's a nice twist, and shopws that DCU Animated doesn't have to follow the mainstream exactly.

I'd rather see Dick and Barbara together... though the tense the relationship with Bruce would bring would be interesting... Sorry for all the spoilers... My bad...

Thanks, Batgirl! I appreciate your nice comments and am glad to hear you enjoyed the story (including the twist near the end).
That was indeed Nora coming to visit Freeze at the end (she had the letter in her hand which Freeze wrote to her at the start of the story, and which her husband had hid from her -- something he'd been doing for as long as Victor was writing them). Of course, Victor was unaware and already long gone. Now, concerning what she was planning to say to Victor -- and what happens next... I'd love to follow up this story sometime in the future if another fill-in issue opportunity comes up (I actually had the idea for a follow-up when writing this story).
No implication meant concerning Freeze having a new "organic" body -- he's just got a replacement robot body under that trench coat at the end. (We saw him as still "just a head" on Batman Beyond.)
And concerning Bruce and Barbara:
On Batman Beyond, it was basically said that Barbara and Bruce had a romantic relationship in the past, and strongly implied that this relationship had something to do with Nightwing leaving Gotham and that this relationship was the one that meant the most to Bruce (at least in my mind -- just look at that scene in "Out of the Past" when Bruce is looking at the photo of himself and Barbara together). And that all had to start somewhere...so I wanted to hint at that. And as with most things, those scenes dealing with that in my story could also be interpreted in many different ways.
And in case you missed it and are interested, Toonzone did an interview with me about this issue (and my other comic work), which you can read at: http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38345
Thanks, again!

Of course, my issue is simply a fill-in issue -- but I love the continuity of the shows, and as a reader I like it when things happen in the stories that involve plot-threads from the shows -- whether it's story elements from the past or implied for the future. I like to feel that things can happen with these characters -- that change can happen. So I wanted to put some of that into my story, by dealing with the Nora/Victor relationship, and to a lesser extent, by hinting at the potential future relationship between Bruce and Barbara.
And I guess establishing that Nora is a scientist also falls into that -- seeing that she was attracted to (and married) two brilliant scientists, it seemed plausible (and made sense to me) that she'd be one herself -- giving them all a common ground. Plus, I think it makes her a stronger character than if she was just some pretty fashion model type or something. I didn't want Nora to be just about being beautiful -- I wanted Victor to be in love with her just as much (if not more) for her mind as her looks. And establishing that says something positive about Victor as well.
I hope you liked the issue, Jim!

Dude - I loved it! I haven't been able to say that about an issue of Gotham Adventures in years - literally! Everything really clicked in this issue, especially the artt. Brad Radar got a better inker this time around and it shows. Granted, it is Terry Austin and his inking still leaves abit to be desired for, you can still see alot of Brad's work shining through.
Plus this is the first time we see Nora indepth. In her three animated appearances, we don't learn much about her. She's the love of Victor's life...that's it. But here, she's fleshe dout some and I really, really like the scientist angle. It's something I would have ever thought of, myself.
I'm a bit dissapointed in the lack of discussion but I hope it picks up soon...

Hey, thanks very much, Jim! I'm glad you really enjoyed it!
I thought Brad did a bang-up job on the art as well. There's some really nice panels in there, and I was very happy with his portrayal of all the little art directions I had in the script.
I hope everyone else enjoys the issue too!

Wow.
Just when I wrote off hopes of seeing a decent new Mr. Freeze story, this issue comes out. Wow, Jason, this was a perfect follow-up to Freeze's ongoing story (it was certainly a hell of a lot better, in my opinion, than Cold Comfort or Meltdown). It was nice to see a bit more of Nora, and the ending, while appropriate, just made me sad (I would like that follow-up story that you're thinking about).
Another thing I appreciated about this issue was that you actually got to see Freeze interact with some of Batman's other enemies -- something we've never seen on the cartoon. Bravo!

I just have one question:
If DC is so invested in what the readers want, why aren't they paying attention????!!! Look at the talkbalk threads from the last few years and then look at this one! Everybody, including me, loved this issue, thanks to Mr Hall!!!! Why hasn't DC hired him as the new regular writer??? Peterson could learn a hell of alot from u, Jason.
I didnt like the art, too cartoon-ish, but not too bad. I stil want Darwin Cooke on this book.
p.s., I absolutely LOVE the whole Bruce and Babs thing, and have been waiting for this ever since Batman Beyond, thanx, great job!

Mr Hall, you've got my nomination for the permanent writer on this series. Just read #51, I enjoyed it. It wasn't quite as good as I was hoping for, but still really really good, and the only reason for that initial reaction is because of me. :)
First of all, love the Bruce/Babs stuff. I would love to see this taken even further personally. I want to see how Babs really does make Bruce happy, but in the end, she comes second. Seeing Barbara having to deal with his different identities in her own way, but reminiscent of Sasha in 'TEC last year. And you touched on that very well, with the "cold" comment etc. Kudos! I think the triangle is a great original twist of the animated series which should be used, it can make for excellent stories.
I enjoyed the Freeze/Nora side as well. Of course, I'm left wanting to see a real meeting of the two together. I like the idea of D'Anjou being a good man, but scared about Nora's endless love for Victor, hence his motive. Truly loving Nora himself. I do think it ended a little similar to Sub-Zero, but it was also really fitting, so I appreciated it.
The art was above and beyond what is usually seen, I think Rader would be even better if he got to do it every month (seems returning artists lose their touch a little, like Burchett in #48). It was still awesome though. The inking did take a little away from it, but these are minor minor flaws in the scheme of what is a great issue - worthy of following the "Batman: Gotham Adventures" title, which is a lot more than I can say for almost all issues between #15 and #50.

I just bought the issue today and I thought it was terrific. It was a great way to take the evolution of Mr. Freeze's character - and, at the same time, kept up Nora's "goddess" appearance for a while. The art was terrific, too - I loved the shading throughout the entire issue. I particularly liked the sequence with Batman and Batgirl on the snowy rooftop, and the small panel where Freeze/Nora/Clayface takes down the Bat-team.
Oooooohhhh I hope that this isn't just a one-time thing. GOTHAM ADVENTURES needed some new blood and Mr. Hall, you're a welcome addition to this title, even if it was, sadly, just for a filler issue.
I think I'm going to go write some fan-mail to DC about this one, now. :)

I'm really stunned by all the enthusiastic comments made upon the art. To my mind it looked very uneven, with out-of-proportions characters and not-so-good looking shading. I never liked Rader's stiff take on the animated style anyway (ugh, just look at his depiction of Daggett or Clayface). Tim Levins could have done a much better job with such a story.
As for the story it was really good. The writer does stand out as a big continuity fan, with all the revelations when the story draws to a close, Freeze's background being obviously well studied, the cameo of D'Anjou, Bruce and Babs' relationship... and as a big continuity fan myself, I enjoyed it very much.
One thing bugged me though: why does Freeze look like he still has a body when we last see him on that boat?

I personally think that Radar suffers from yet another subpar inker. Terry Austin's inking on Superman Adventures ended up getting worse and worse as the series progressed. Don't believe me? Check out some of the early issues and compair to the latter issues. Alot of differance. Brad Radar's work on The Batman Adventures #4 - 6 remains some of my favorite artwork in the animated books. If Rick Burchett or Terry Beatty stepped in to ink, I bet the artwork would be much better. Rader's guest pencils on issue #33 also suffered because of a not-so-good inker.
As for the writing, I'm just glad to finally see some character development. This is the kind of the stuff the bok should be doing on a regular basis. Not issues about kidnapping chefs and crime 'artists', but stories that move the characters forward.

Thanks very much! I'm glad you liked all the different elements of the story. I thought it made sense to play the potential Bruce/Barbara relationship against the Victor/Nora relationship -- Bruce getting an even better sense/understanding of where Victor is coming from (but, of course, not agreeing with how far Victor tends to take things). I had a great time writing it and would love to continue Victor and Nora's story in a future fill-in issue.

Hey, I'm glad you dug the story! I love using continuity to help support a story, without making the story hinge solely on it.
Concerning Freeze at the end, as I mentioned above, he's just got another robot body underneath that trench coat. (It draws less attention than just being a "head" -- ;) )

Mr. Hall, I warned you that my review was coming....so brace yourself...
I LOVED IT!!!
Oh my God, an issue I can actually love! Do you know just how long we`ve been waiting for an amazing issue? The responses on this board don`t begin to express our joy, as fans of B:TAS and longtime supporters of the monthly comic, at the work you and the team on issue 51 have done. This is not a `fill-in issue` - this is a real issue. I`ve been patient and loyal throughout all the ups and downs on every B:TAS-inspired monthly comic, but Peterson`s frankly poor writing and off-beat characterizations have pushed me to the very brink of my threshhold for pain. Killer Croc using puppies as a back-up plan? The Mad Hatter caring about Batman`s happiness? Two-Face setting up giant traps in alley ways and trying to electrocute babies!?!?! That is not good writing.
ISSUE 51 IS!!!
All I have been holding out for is a talented writer with an eye for detail and a true respect for the animated series to come along and save this book from the untimely death that the current team is working so hard to ensure. This is rude, I know, so please forgive my harsh words Levins and Peterson, but I just can`t understand anymore why I pay money to be disappointed. Jason Hall, this single issue has made all these endless months of waiting and hoping worthwhile. Please do everything you can to try and return to this series, and I assure you that I will do what I can to support your work.
Sure, the art could have been a little less reminiscent of Neil Vokes` Superman Adventures issues, and the Clayface-Daggett intervention threw me a little, but this is one of the best Gotham Adventures stories I`ve seen in the last two or three years. The current creative team, like em or dislike em, have had more than enough time on this series, and should be replaced by another that can treat this book like the treasure it was....the treasure it still can be.
You planted the seeds for the Bruce and Barbara romance - a nod to contintuity which I deeply appreciate - you brought back Roland Daggett and Clayface in a surprisingly appropriate way - another nod to B:TAS history - and you resisted the temptation to be the man who fully shapes the character of Nora Fries - which shows a true respect for the creators of the character, as well as respect for the character herself. I really hope that you, along with Dini and Timm, can write a follow-up that solidifies Victor and Nora`s love for each other, without completely resolving the conflicts that plague them.
I also have to give a really big nod to Brad Radar and Terry Austin, whose work I was pleasantly surprised by. Brad`s last work in this series was too sketchy and angular to be really enjoyable. Austin`s inks managed to round out some of the corners, giving it a balance it otherwise would have lacked. In the animated style, curves are just as important as angles. So while some panels didn`t look perfect, many did, and considering the off-model work Levins turns in month after month, consider our praise a true compliment.
Jason Hall...I know this has been a long, potentially hurtful post (depending on which side you`re on)....but please regard me as a greatful fan, ready and willing to campaign for your promotion to full-time writer, and generally...a very happy guy! Thank you, really, Thank You !!!
P.S. If DC is listening ( ), get Ty, Bruce Timm (yah right :D ), Aluir Amancio, Bret Blevins, Darwin Cooke or Shane Glines on board as penciller, and you`ll have a solid gold book!!!

This was without a doubt the best issue of Gotham Adventures since "Chaos at the hands of the Joker." That was what I was thinking while reading it. The story had flow. Most importantly the words on the pages seemed to mean something.
It was rather refreshing to see a major bad guy like Freeze and take a look at him as a person. We actually got character development. We got to see him for one day. We got to see how his life was, what he did, and what he thought about.
The story had a big swerve with Clayface. I liked that a lot. I like to see Clayface's ability used.
We even got to see Ivy and Joker. What more can a guy ask for?
Like I said this was the best issue I've read in sometime till I got to the last page? What was up with that? Bruce taking Barbara to a movie? The thought of Bruce acting like a school boy with a crush made me sick. So she got hurt. She should learn to move faster when a madman points a freeze ray at her.
Bruce doesn't have time to take in a movie. He has to protect the city. Crime doesn't wait for Attack of the Clones to end to start up. I would like to see a follow up to this. I would like to see Bruce take her to the movies and at the same time let the Joker bust out and take the city hostage.
Ohh well that didn't take away from me enjoying the issue.

I think the `let`s go to the movies` thing was more playful than anything else. They`re both two grown-ups, and I agree that Bruce is hardly the kind to have a crush on someone. I think, deep down, that he finds Barbara attractive, but would never give it much thought, on account of her past relationship with Dick, and the fact that he`s so much older than her.
Remember how Barbara suggested they call it a night and catch a flick at the start of the issue? She was just tired of staying out in the cold and, like an ordinary person, thought it might be nice to chill-out with a friend by catching a movie. Of course, they had to go off after Freeze, so the movie was out of the question. By the end of the story, I think Bruce had remembered the preciousness of Babs in his life, as a friend and partner, and playfull suggested the movies, because she had mentionned it earlier. It was sort of a `See...I heard you` moment! Jason Hall, you rock! Oh the subtly...

Thanks for the kind words! I felt it was important to see what was inside Freeze, underneath that cold exterior. Being reunited with his wife (or seemingly so) would certainly bring out the "Victor" inside the "Mr. Freeze". It's rewarding to see that people are enjoying seeing that as well.
Concerning Barbara and Bruce, no intentions meant to portray Bruce as a "schoolboy with a crush" -- it was his way to basically tell Barbara that he cared for her without saying it (referring back to her suggesting they take in a movie earlier in the story). What that level of "caring" is, is up to the reader to interpret. Sure, Bruce isn't generally the most emotional of guys -- at least not on the outside (he and Freeze both have a cold exterior) -- but on the inside his motivations are totally fueled by emotion...just like Mr. Freeze. That's why I wanted to show the parallel between Batman and Freeze -- Batman coming to a greater understanding of Freeze's motivations (though not generally agreeing with his actions) -- and perhaps Bruce beginning to come to a realization about his own feelings.
Anyhoo, I'm glad you dug the issue! :)

I managed to pick up one of the last copies in Glasgow this afternoon. It was strange seeing only a small number of copies left because usually there's a pile of about 20 on the shelf and more in the cupboard beneath, but today there was only 3 copies left and I can understand why...
I absolutely loved this issue, something I haven't said about a B:GA book in an age. The Clayface twist at the end really took me off guard and really added to my enjoyment of the book. Also, it was great to see Daggett again even if only a cameo. It's great how you utilised such a great range of characters in the Animated Universe. I also thought it was great how you respected and enhanced the continuity of the series. I really hope you get the chance to continue with this again, because when I finished with the issue it left me desperate for more.
Thank you Jason!

Batman Beyond's creation of a Bruce/Babs/Dick timeshare always bothered me, enough so that I had to write two editorials to wash the taste of it out of my brain. To my mind Barbara would have been developed better if forced to choose between the outlaw (Dick) and the man who upholds the law (Sam Young, her future husband). Intellectually I know that :
1. Freeze was never Dick's villain, or Barbara's ; only Bruce has spent enough time with him to commiserate with him ;
2. Continuities aren't binding on each other (just because Dick is Bruce's emotional and legal son and never lost Barbara in mainstream continuity doesn't make it so in any others) ;
3. Some fans love the Bruce/Barbara relationship.
In my head I know all these things. But the relationship still bothered me.
That said, though, the development of the other characters was stunning. Francis wants to protect his marriage, and to protect his wife from emotional harm (and physical harm -- Freeze has killed people). These goals are good. But Francis hopes to do these good things by doing bad ones : lying to his wife, interfering with Freeze's attempts to make amends and to get well (two things he can't do without Nora's cooperation). A no-win situation. Beautifully done.
The tribe has spoken. We need more of this.

Does any one else feel that Scott Peterson has turned into to the Joel what's his name (the fourth Batman movie which shall remain nameless) of Gotham Adventures?
Jason, I really hope you get to do some more stories. You just have to follow this one up! To tell you the truth, I was rather nervous about the whole Nora/Freeze thing. I always wondered what it would have been like for them to meet up- and if it could be done properly to make a good story. You went above and beyond with it. I hope that they're smart enough to let you continue on with this and other stories.

As a huge fan of the show, I really wanted to do a story that felt I would want to see as a fan/reader. It's certainly rewarding that so many people are enjoying it. I had an incredible time writing the story and working with so many talented people -- and I'd love to do another fill-in issue.

Thank you for the great review! It's great to see that so many readers are enjoying not only the plot twists/developments, but the character and emotional elements as well.
And concerning Bruce and Barbara, I think the scene with them can be interpreted in many ways. Like I was saying up above in an earlier post, it *could* be the hint of something new between them down the road at some point -- but it could also be taken as Bruce admitting he does care for her (just as he cares for the others), but without coming out and saying it -- instead making a reference back to the "movie thing", when his earlier no-response was rather chilly. I figured it would mean different things to different people, and I think that's okay -- as readers, we all bring certain ideas to any story and find varied meanings in what we read.
Thanks, again!

OMG yes! I thought I was the only one! Really though, his stories are just as paper-thin and childish as the third and fourth movies. At least they're sans nipples. I guess we can be thankful for that...sigh...is the regular creative team ever going to change before this book dies? :(

Wow! I am stunned. Its been so long since there has been an issue of GA that I liked, let alone loved!! This issue was fantastic! Without a doubt the best issue they've had in about, what 2 years, give or take? I agree with everyone else when I say that the character developement in this was great. Gordon's comment about finally figuring it out, then being bothered when they beat him to it had me LMAO!! :D I wish that there is someway that the storyline with Bruce and Barbara could be expanded, but I know that Peterson would never do that. THe ending actually had me a little surprised, and Dagget was a pleasant surprise. As far as I know, he has never been in the TNBA era until now. Well Mr. Hall, I hope that DC sees how well this issue has done, and gives you a more permanent role, but if not, I hope at least for a few more filler issues with you. Thank you for letting me enjoy the Animated universe once again!! :)

Well, if the cops are smart, they'd keep him frozen in tiny pieces -- though I suppose that could be considered inhumane...
Either that, or go into the Play-doh business and ship the pieces to the various elementary schools around Gotham for the kids' arts & crafts classes! ;)

Thanks so much for all the compliments! I'm glad to hear you liked the various elements with Barbara/Bruce, Daggett/Clayface, and Gordon, etc. (And since you mentioned enjoying the scene with Gordon getting beat to the punch, you may notice a similarity between his response and that of a certain daughter of his earlier in the story when also dealing with Batman! ;) )
I truly had a great time writing this story and felt very fortunate that everything from the cover, to the artwork, to the coloring, etc. all was top-notch. It was an honor to work with such talented people.

Well, I haven't got the money to pick this one up yet, but I'll be there Wednesday morning to pick it up. The first few pages blow me away, the fact that it's not spread pages makes it so much better. Mr. Hall, you've got my vote as permanant writer for this title and I haven't even read the thing yet! :)

This issue was ust a nice breathe of fresh air. The story had a sense of intelligence that has been severly lacking in this series as late. Not only that, but the series treated the characters right. Characters were actrually on character and acted properly. No out-of-character dialogue - they were just right. I can't recommend this issue enough!

I just wanted to add that anyone who enjoyed "Early Thaw" may also like the comic I wrote called, "Mephisto and the Empty Box" -- as it has a similar "emotional atmosphere" to it. It was recently optioned for feature film and was voted #1 Indy Comic of 2001 by Wizard Magazine (along with the "Pistolwhip" GN, which I did some additional writing on).
Here's a description:
MEPHISTO AND THE EMPTY BOX
A moody and enigmatic tale of one man's obsession with lost love and newfound magic. On the night of their wedding, John and Carolyn Flynn attend the performance of a stage magician called Mephisto. But what dark and sinister secrets does Mephisto's devilish magic box hold for the newlyweds that will forever change their lives? (24 page comic book, b&w, oversized, 3.95)
You can see a five page preview here (http://www.pistolwhipcomics.com/preview/mephisto/intro.htm).
It's published by Top Shelf Productions (http://www.topshelfcomix.com/topshelf/index.html) and is available at comic shops or directly through Top Shelf. (If your store doesn't have a copy, they should have no problem ordering you one -- it was just reoffered in the newest Previews catalogue.)
Thanks!

I just bought this issue yesterday and must say I thoroughly (sp?) enjoyed it, which is something I haven't been able to say about Gotham Adventures since #6 I think...it was one of the early issues. Either way it was a great story and although the art left alot to be desired I was glad see a GA book that could compete with it's mainstream brothers for a change.

WOW!
This issue took me by surprise! Especially the twist....
I had a hard time waiting for this issue after hearing all the positive things people had to say about it. DC's subscription department always sends me stuff late, but this time the wait was particularly unbearable.
I'm happy to report it was more than worth it! It's been a long time an issue of Gotham Adventures has featured a story that really feels like an episode of the cartoon. I especially loved the dialouge, for the first time in so long in this book, it felt like words that the characters would say. I could almost hear the lines being said by Kevin Conroy and Michael Ansara!
And I don't see why some people are getting bent out of shape about Bruce's movie comment. It's a classic storytelling technique called the "call back" where a character refrences dialouge from earlier in the story (the movie Rush Hour has tons of call backs!) In this case, Bruce's comment was a call back of Barbra's suggestion that they go to a movie in stead of patrol in the cold weather.
This call back was Bruce's way of showing he does listen to what Barbra says, even though he dosen't acknowladge her at the time she says it. He obviously didn't mean they should literally go catch a movie right then and there, since Barbra was still weakened.
I thought the call back was a neat touch to the story, especially since one of Barbra's last lines in "Return of the Joker" was about the fact that even though he dosen't always express his feelings out loud, Bruce does care.
Neat stuff, best in years on this title.

Thanks for the high praise, ClockStomper! I'm glad to hear you liked the Clayface twist at the end, the Bruce/Barbara moment, and Freeze's and Batman's dialogue, etc. My intentions were definitely to try to make the issue feel like an actual episode of the Animated Series as much as possible, so it's great to hear that it came across that way!

This definatly plays out like an episode to the series. This is also a nice 'unofficial' sequel to B:GA #5 - a great Mr. Freeze story. The dialogue plays out great as does the action iery nicely. Everything came into play into this issue. I really hope to see Jason Hall's name appear on some upcoming Gotham Adventures, Justice League Adventures, or ANY DC book!

Jason Hall, I wasn't sure where to post some questions concerning the plot of this issue, so I dug this thread up. Hope you don't mind ;)
After reading the issue quite a few times (all the while preserving it as if it were my own organs...you know what I mean! ), I keep wondering what inspired you to bring Clayface into the story. Were you looking for a way to keep Victor's encounter with his wife from being the genuine article? Or, did you invision Matt Hagen in the plot from the start?
Also, I have some trouble understanding the nature of Daggett and Clayface's agreement. Did Daggett seek out Nora Fries annonymously to develop the solution to the Renew-U cream? Why her? Or did he simply put the word out that he wanted someone to develop it? It would be really interesting to see what he's been up to since B:TAS. Surely he's been in financial ruin since "Batgirl Returns". Do you think he had been in jail and learned his lesson by finally trying to reverse his actions?
Also, why and how did Clayface become involved? At what point did he decide to impersonate Nora? Did he do so in order to work on Hagen's formula, or to use Freeze? It seems pretty unlikely that he would impersonate Nora in order to work on some mystery formula some mystery person has offered money to have solved, so there must be something I'm missing :o
The rest of your story is pure poetry to me, but I keep stumbling on these issues every time I read it. The Clayface angle isn't crystal clear to me yet. Is it supposed to be? I really hope you can clear this up for me. Thanks for caring so much ;) Believe me, it's appreciated!

The Clayface/Nora ruse (and Clayface unknowingly working for Daggett) was always part of the story, even when I had the original idea way back when after the "Heart of Ice" episode first aired (though back then, the idea was that Nora would have come to Victor outside his cell at Arkham, and at that time, Victor believed Nora died in that explosion in his office/lab, so he'd think she survived somehow, and then he would have broken out because he'd seen her outside his cell window).
The "stabilization formula" is really the MacGuffin of the story, but my thoughts were that Daggett drummed up some cash from various sources since his ruin at the end of "Batgirl Returns", and anonymously contacted Hagen/Clayface to impersonate Nora, breakout Freeze from Arkham, and dupe him into creating the new "stabilization formula" that could put him back on the map. I figure Clayface himself was probably hard up for some cash, so taking on such a job without knowing who he's working for (or mistakingly thinking he's working for someone else) makes sense, especially if he gets to act in the process!
Daggett never had any contact with Nora. It's the real Nora on page 4 discovering (or at least very suspicious of) her husband hiding something from her. Then it's Clayface as Nora for the rest of the story (we see her get in the cab across the street from Batman and Batgirl that Barbara is joking about), all the way until near the end where Clayface is frozen and shattered. Then it's the real Nora going to see Victor at Arkham at the end, having found the letters her husband had been hiding, but of course, Victor is on a ship writing her one last letter to say goodbye. Oh, the heart-wrenching irony! (And it makes you wonder at the end what's happened in Nora and her husband's relationship due to her finding the letters -- one of the many things I'd like to deal with in a potential follow-up story if the opportunity to do another fill-in issue ever arises.)
And Nora/Clayface never actually "works" on the formula in the story (since Clayface isn't a scientist, just an actor, and is just working off the information his anonymous/false benefactor has given him). Freeze does all the work. But Victor never really notices this, as "love is blind", and he wants Nora back so badly, that the possibility that it's actually happening makes him oblivious to any other possibilities of what the situation may actually be. (And Clayface could have easily studied Nora in her everyday life to make his performance as good as possible.)
Of course, if you over-analyze any story too much, it sort of takes the magic away from it -- but hopefully those answers shed some light on your questions/comments! :)
And thanks again for all the kind words -- I'm glad the story meant so much to you!
Take care,
Jason H. :bosko:

I finally just picked this issue up over the weekend and all I can say is "WOW !!!" This is what GA is supposed to be... absolutely fantastic story, great character development, just wonderful... see what good writing can do !!! I just wish that you wrote this title all the time !! Freeze is my favorite animated villain (with the possible exception of Ra's, and the Joker when he's creepy like in the ROTJ flashbacks), and your take on the Victor/Nora relationship was brilliant ...
The art was also good, but I really would have liked to see what Tim Levins would have done with a great story... He hasn't had one in a while, and certainly not like this !! I personally like his art very much, so I really wish he could have drawn this one... I have no complaints about Brad Rader whatsover- but, oh well...
Oh, and my 2 cents on the Bruce/Babs thing... No Thanks !!!
I always saw Bruce as the father figure to Dick, Tim, and Babs (even though her father is alive and well), so a romantic thing between the 2 of them doesn't sit well with me... didn't like the allusion to it in BB: Out of the Past, and still don't. That doesn't mean, however, that taking in a movie is out of the question- I just prefer not to go with the "Date" angle. I also would prefer to think that despite their other issues, Bruce couldn't and wouldn't put Dick thru that...
Anyway... Great Job, Jason !!! Hope to see more from you real soon !!

Hey, thanks very much for all the kind words! I really do appreciate it. It's great to hear you enjoyed the story so much. Mr. Feeze is my favorite Batman: Animated villain as well (as it's probably not difficult to tell! :) ), so telling this story was a dream come true. The Victor/Nora relationship is one of the rich untapped storylines left from the Animated Series (and the backbone of what makes Mr. Freeze such a compelling character), so it means a lot to hear that you (and other readers) really enjoyed how I portrayed it. (I even got the opportunity to briefly ask Paul Dini and Bruce Timm at the San Diego Comicon if they had a chance to read B:GA #51, and they both said they did and liked what I did with the story -- so that was certainly an honor!). Fill-in issue opportunities don't come up too often, but I definitely hope to do more -- especially with Victor and Nora.
And I think Brad Rader did an incredible job on the artwork -- it really helped get across the "dark-moody-noir" feel of the story (even the colors felt a little darker and moodier, which was nice), but at the same time captured the heart and despair of Victor and Nora's story. That shot of Nora on the last page just tears your heart out!
Thanks again!

Poor mom...she sends me to grab some cash from the ATM at the supermarket, and I come back with a comic! hehe, I saw 51 and I just couldn't resist. And of course, I must say, I absolutely loved it! I was so taken by surprise with the Clayface thing, but it so worked, your stories are great Jason. As for the Bruce/Babs thing, it was cool and made me get a "BB" type of feeling, but then of course I got the wierded out feeling and was wondering why Dick didn't randomly show up,lol. Regardless, I can't wait to check out your other work Jason.

Thanks for the answers Jason - they really helped clear things up for me. Luckily though, I understood which Nora was which the first time around! If I hadn't, I suspect I would have been much more confused. In any case, thanks for clearing it all up anyway.
I do have to disagree with jm5150bc though. I'm not too much of a fan of Tim Levin's work, so I was really thrilled to see Brad and Terry handle the art. This issue did indeed feel very "film-noir" and I was so please that the characters looked so "on model". The only character that looked a little off was Batgirl from time to time, mainly her face and hair, but that is only a nit-pick. All the poses and panels flow wonderfully. For once, I enjoyed the bits of humour thrown in rather than rolling my eyes :D What a thought-provoking, exciting and tremendously moving issue! I must say that the pages from Nora's arrival at Arkham to their embrace in the lab are exactly what I'd hoped the story would give us. Brad and Terry really succeeded with this one. The panels in which Victor reaches out to Nora, but withdraws his hand were really the crowning moment of the story. Those three panels are exactly what their love is about, and it breaks our hearts. And the ending!!! Ok, I promised myself I wouldn't cry.... :(
Mr. Hall...or Jason...whichever you prefer...we all know your stance on continuing this Freeze story should another fill-in issue pop up, but what are your thoughts on some of the other characters in the B:TAS universe? Basically said, if you were to be appointed writer on the series, where would you take things? What kind of stories would you tackle? Thanks again ;)

Thanks for your enthusiasm, DisneyBoy, but B:GA already has a regular creative team (previous Eisner-award nominees to boot!). I'm simply someone who was fortunate enough to get to do a fill-in issue, and it's unknown if there are any future fill-in issues on the horizon -- only time will tell. However, I'll be doing an issue of Justice League Adventures (no details yet!) and I'm really looking forward to it!

Thanks so much, Flash! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! The Clayface ruse was something I hoped readers wouldn't figure out until it was revealed at the end (though there are subtle clues throughout the story) -- and it seems everyone was taken by surprise by it, so that's great to see.

I'm sorry, Jason if I gave you the wrong impression! :o I know Peterson and Levins are the current creative team. I was only wondering where you might take characters like Catwoman, Scarecrow, Joker, Two-Face and Talia if given the chance to do a B:TAS story without focusing on Victor. If you'd rather not share your ideas, I completely understand. I was only curious ;)

Hey, thanks very much! It's *always* great to hear that someone who doesn't usually read comics likes something you've written. I thought I wouldn't have a chance of getting this issue at this late date, but as I was at Walden's Bookstore yesterday and saw the man at the store replacing all the comic books on the rack. Just as he was about to put the new Bane issue of the comic on the shelves, I snatched one of the last copies of B:GA #51. I have to say it was a very nice sign of relief. There was a lot of material there. I would have loved to see it expanded into a two parter.
The scene where Mr. Freeze commentated on the rest of the Arkham inmates was great. I also loved his interaction with "Nora."
I would also love to see your take on the Joker or Ra's Al Ghul, Mr. Hall.
Thank you for a job well done. Part of me thinks you were made for two parters, Mr. Hall. I'm not sure why. However, it would be great if they'd let you do two fill in issues so that you could do just that. Better yet, let you take the book over.

Hiya, folks!
In case anyone's interested -- there's a an excellent (and very nice) review of B:GA #51 in this week's issue of the Comic Buyers Guide (#1502) on Page 16. It's part of Tony Isabella's keen weekly column "Tony's Tips" -- and he gives "Early Thaw" a rating of 5 out of 5!

This is one of the rare isues of Batman: Gotham Adventures that I have been anticipating. Not only is there a stellar writer on this, but a great penciller as well. And, the story sounds interesting as heck! Now, did it all work out? You bet it did! And now...my comments...
I'm not really sure where to start with this, so I guess I'll start with the most obvious part - the writing! And you know what? That doesn't help much, either. The writing here is great, so I'm not sure where to begin. Well, I guess I'll have to start from the beginning then.
I love the set up for Mr. Freeze in the first few pages. We instantly know his deal by the fourth panel on the first panel. The dialogue in that scene is exactly right - how he would say it. I can here the voice actor delivering these lines. There's a coldness to his dialogue here that just works. We also get some nice exposition dialogue which isn't too intrusive like it can be. I love his single 'Lunatics' line. Just brilliant. That single word says alot. He believes he's not insane and doesn't belong there (and in a way, I agree).
And we finally get a peek of the homelife for Nora and Dr. D'Anjou, which I was reall ylooking forward to. His reaction to Freeze's letter is expected, although I figured he would just burn them or trash them. It's odd how he keeps a little stockpile of them, but I suppose he has his reasons. And we also see that Nora is no fool, already noting the suspscious wet foot track on the ground.
And finally we get some great Batgirl/Batman interaction. There's almost a maturity and smootheness to it. The dialogue really flows well here. Batgirl is the perfect counter here for Batman. We get the typical Batman silent treatment which just always works, and Batgirl's hilarious remarks ("Wanna go break his legs") just work perfectly. This scene also leads nicely into the Freeze/"Nora Fries" scene. I love how this scene is driven by the emtion of a man claiming to be emotionless. It's such a great oxy moron that he doesn't realize.
I just love how the scenes between Batman/Batgirl and Freeze/Fries are seamlessly connected and just flow at a great pace. Page 10 is when the story kicks into high gear. When I first read the issue, thi sis when I got suspiscious of her. The phone call is a time honored 'give away'. I assumed she was just working for someone, and not the surprise we got at the end. Plus, we finally get to see some of her scientific side - something we've never heard about in the animated series until now. Then again, she's been in a frozen state for all of her appearances...
After a nice scene with the Commissioner (smoking his trademark pipe), We're thrown into the conlusion. First off - Nora working the beakers! Yes! I love this! Her and Freeze working side by side. If there is any scene or story that should be animated, this is it! Plus we get another hint about Nora with Freeze's comment about her not wearng a coat. A nice little subtle hint to the end, something I totally ignored the first time! Another 'gym' mention by Batgirl before she's frozen is what caught my attention. Then is where I thought something was really fishy and wrong.
I love the look of almost desperation on Batman's face a few panels later when we see him with a blow torch to the giant block of ice encasing Batgirl.
Essentially after this scene, we get thrown into a whole load of twsist and turns. Nora is Clayface! Daggett returns! Freeze Escapes! The last few pages just hit me like a tonne of bricks! It was great! A great conclusion and an incredibly heart breaking ending. Not only is this issue a big milestone for Freeze and Fries, but also for Batman and Batgirl. This issue lays the groundwork for the supposed affair between the two (which I support, BTW). It was great to see Bruce act so...human...at the end when he talks to Barb. A very cool thing to see (pun intended).
This is probably the best issue of the series since issue #33. Everything in this issue just crie sout to be animated. From the tight and amazing script to the amazing visuals. My only real complaint with the story is the ink job by Terry Austin. I was hoping to see Beatty ink this issue, but was disappointed to see Austin inking. His inking style really hinders the artwork. Brad Radar did some amazing stuff in issues #4 - 6 of The Batman Adventures and you can see slightly see it, but the inking just really brings the artwork down (If you don't believe me, check out his Superman Adventures stuff).
But that doesn't stop me from appreciating one of the best issues of the entire series, and the best in recent memory. I just love this issue. I can't tell you how many times I've re-read this issue. Even the Bob Smith cover is great.
I'm not sure how much gushing I can do, but this issue does what the comic should already be doing. Not only is is moving the characters ahead, but we get a solid story with some real consequences. This story brings about a big change for Mr. Freeze and begins a new story for Batgirl and Barbara, which is immediatly dropped by the next issue when we return to the same old Scott Peterson stuff.
If there's anything I want more in this title, is to see more of this! I hope DC gives Jason some more issues...
A great damn issue!

You hit the nail on the head -- Freeze definitely feels as though he doesn't belong there with the rest of the loonies.
With the dialogue, I truly wanted it to feel like you were hearing the lines spoken by the actors on the show when reading the story. Michael Ansara did such an amazing performance as the character on the Animated Series that I wanted to be as true to that as possible -- and the same goes for Batman, Batgirl, Gordon, and the rest (though that can be tricky in a medium where you're reading and not hearing -- heh). I'm glad to see you felt I succeeded! :) I was definitely treating this story as if it were not just a comic but an actual episode of the series -- and wanted it to feel that way for the readers.
The amount of "exposition" I put in was something I paid close attention to -- there were past story elements that were important to get across to the reader, but I really didn't want to do the typical "flashback" (which would have taken up precious space I'd rather use for the actual story). So between Freeze's letter and Batman, Batgirl, and Gordon's conversation atop the Police Station -- my hopes were that would be a subtle enough presentation of the information without hitting the reader over the head, while at the same time making it seem like a natural part of the story. Again, glad to hear you thought that came across well.
Getting to portray Nora as an actual person and not simply as a "scene decoration" or "MacGuffin" was one of the things I was most looking forward to doing in my story -- especially since it had never been done before! I decided to make her a scientist because I wanted her to be a strong female character -- not just some pretty "fashion model type" who was an arm decoration for the brilliant Victor Fries. I think making her a brilliant scientist in her own right says something good about Fries' character as well -- that he wasn't just simply in love with her for her looks, but for her mind. And since she ended up marrying two different scientists, it seemed natural that she was one too -- it being part of the mutual attraction. And I was actually the first writer to put words into her mouth -- to be honest, I didn't think I'd be allowed to do any of that, but none of it was ever questioned. And when I got to briefly see Paul Dini and Bruce Timm at the San Diego Comicon, I asked them if they had the chance to read the issue and what they thought (wondering if they'd hate me for taking such a big step with one of their favorite characters/stories  ), and they both said they loved what I did with it! So that was great to hear and a true honor.
Oh, and with D'Anjou, since we'd only seen him portrayed once before in the comic, and as a generally all around nice guy -- I wanted to give a hint that there was more to him than just being "a nice guy"...and love makes people do strange things. (Something I'd like to deal with if I were to ever get the opportunity to do a follow-up fill-in issue...)
I wanted to show a more personal portrayal of the Batman/Batgirl relationship -- especially since its parallel with the Freeze/Nora relationship was such an integral part of the story. (Editor Joan Hilty had a couple great suggestions for slightly tweaking a line or two of Batgirl's dialogue -- though the "Wanna go break his legs" line was in my first draft -- ;) -- glad you got a kick out of it!) There was a definite comparison between Batman and Freeze being made throughout -- what makes them similar and what ultimately makes them different. While Freeze claims to be frozen to emotion, we see him acting very much to the contrary once reunited with "Nora". And since Batman tends to act in a similar chilly manner, I thought it natural to see the "warmer" side of him when faced with someone he cares deeply about facing potential death. At the end, I think Batman realizes his similarities with Freeze -- and more importantly, where they differ.
See above for my comments on Nora... :)
I did my best to sprinkle visual clues throughout the story to at least hint in various degrees to the surprises at the end (like "Nora" not being cold and Batgirl's comment on her strength -- which you mentioned). My personal favorite was the visual transition on the top of Page 9 from "Nora's" lipstick mark on Freeze's glass helmet to the neon sign for "True Lips Lipstick" from Daggett Industries -- and I thought Brad Rader did an amazing job of bringing that to life from the script to the page.
Brad really did a great job of capturing the emotion in this scene -- visually we've got Batman, who is supposedly somewhat figuratively "frozen" to emotion himself, with a look of desperation as he attempts to free someone he cares about from being literally frozen alive...
I really wanted the reader to be surprised at the end (without feeling cheated -- thus the various subtle clues throughout) -- and I love stories when all hell breaks loose, so that's what I tried to do here. Personally, I'm also a fan of the potential Batman/Batgirl eventual relationship -- it makes sense in a lot of ways -- *but* I know some aren't, so I wanted to portray any hint of this in my story in such a way that it really can be taken how the reader so chooses -- if you like the idea of the relationship, then it's a hint at the beginnings of that -- if you don't, then it's just Bruce being nice to someone he cares about (which everyone agrees he cares for Barbara), showing a warmer side.
I thought Terry Austin's inking on this story might just be his best work on any of the animated books. I know Brad was pleased with Terry's inks over his pencils. We wanted it to have a distinctive "film noir" feel -- even a bit moreso than normal -- and I really think that came across. I also thought the colors were great -- it seemed to be a darker pallet than usual, which fit the story perfectly.
But that doesn't stop me from appreciating one of the best issues of the entire series, and the best in recent memory. I just love this issue. I can't tell you how many times I've re-read this issue. Even the Bob Smith cover is great.
I loved the cover as well -- it was perfect! (And it just might be my favorite of the series so far -- though #50 was really nice too...)
I'm not sure how much gushing I can do, but this issue does what the comic should already be doing. Not only is is moving the characters ahead, but we get a solid story with some real consequences.
Moving the story ahead without alienating potential new readers was definitely something that was important to me -- it's great to see readers enjoyed that as well.
If there's anything I want more in this title, is to see more of this! I hope DC gives Jason some more issues...
I appreciate the opportunity Joan Hilty gave me with this issue and I'd love to do another fill-in issue if the opportunity comes up with any of the characters, but especailly if I could do a follow-up to this story!
A great damn issue!
Thanks again very much for the great review, Jim! I hope this'll convince those remaining folks who perhaps haven't picked up the issue to go out and grab a copy! (One of my best friends, who happens to own a comic shop, told me last week that he's reordering the issue for the second time! And this is over two month's after it originally hit the stands! That was certainly great to hear...)
If any of you haven't picked up the issue yet, now's the time! I think you'll really enjoy it! :D
(And thanks again to *everyone* who picked it up, and to those who posted here about it -- I truly appreciated the kind words and support! :) )

Jason, I loved your story. Will you be writing the next Mr. Freeze story?
Thanks very much for the kind words! It's really great to hear from so many readers that they enjoyed the issue.
It probably goes without saying that I would love to do a follow-up Freeze story if another fill-in issue opportunity were to arise. If you and anyone else would like to see this as well -- it probably couldn't hurt to send DC a letter and let them know! :)
Thanks again,

Great issue! Very character driven, but with some nice action sequences, too. Freeze's reaction to Clayface's deception was perfect. And the ending, when Nora came to see Freeze just after he'd escaped, was so bittersweet . . . a tear or two escaped when I read it.
Kudos to the writer! (Nice art, too. Especially the cover.)

Thanks very much! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the issue. It was certainly a dream come true to get the opportunity to continue Victor and Nora's story -- my favorite storyline from the Animated Series.
I'll also be writing an upcoming issue of Justice League Adventures, so I hope you'll check that out -- release date is TBD.

Hmmm.
Exactly how many postive posts are there in this thread?
Ummm....all?
How many negative ones?
Oh right....none.
Do me a favor Jason: Extend your right hand, strech it over your left shoulder, and pat...repeatedly.
You've earned it, my man. We're proud of ya! :)

Ya know I just reread this issue and boy was it good and since Jason wrote a follow-up story, I must say I can't wait for the follow-up, DC hurry up and schedule it! Everything about this issue was great once again, the twist, Batman and Batgirl, and Mr. Freeze was perfectly in character, this is how he should be, only Nora should be the only living being he cares for no "maybe I'll get Talia" thing. Freeze's interest should only be Nora. I can't wait for the follow-up!

I've recently printed the original summary to Batman Adventures #15, so then I decided to read the talkbacks of Jason Hall's stories (Gotham Adventures #5/51 and Batman Adventures #15). Anyway,
I did see that there was kind of connection being made with Freeze and Bruce. Sure we know what happened to Freeze, Nora, and the Bat Team but what happened to Clayface?
Well, if the cops are smart, they'd keep him frozen in tiny pieces -- though I suppose that could be considered inhumane...
Either that, or go into the Play-doh business and ship the pieces to the various elementary schools around Gotham for the kids' arts & crafts classes! ;)
Maybe that's the time when Morgan Edge obtains this piece for his art collection. You know, just before Grodd and crew invade his island in Secret Society.
I can't really comment on this issue without rehashing everyone elses opinions. Let's just hope this will be reprinted when/if the final two Batman Adventures digests.

I haven't read about it yet, but boy, would I kill for it! Mr. Freeze is my favourite villain in Batman's Rogue Gallery and will stay that way. Really heartbreaking, the fact that no matter what, he couldn't be Nora, which crushes me. :crying:
