It came to my attention on another messageboard today that the Sci-Fi channel will be airing some high profile animes this summer. These include:

Martian Successor Nadesico
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gunbuster
Perfect Blue
Blue Gender
Spriggan
Akira

Sounds pretty good :p I know what you're saying, there's a catch, right? Well, thats right. This is for the UK version of the Sci-Fi Channel, not the american one :( As far as I can tell there are no plans to air this stuff in the US. Atleast those of you in Britain can enjoy anime on Sci-Fi again ;)

Y'know, Sheamon, you really had me going for awhile there.

And I here I was so pysched to see Eva, in its entirety, so I could rail on it even harder than I do now...

So, the Brits get more of the good stuff on their Sci-Fi. I'm feeling like the fox in The Fox and the Grapes by Aesop.

All those anime titles on cable there, and I'm right here.

Oh well, at least I have complete collections of EVA and Nadesico and Akira on DVD. :D

I knew it was too good to be true... because it was. Sigh...

This sounds like more ammo you can use to get your PBS station to show anime: "Hello, WNET? There are these cartoons in England that are like nothing I've seen here before. I heard the San Jose station is showing them, why arent you?"

I looked at it really fast and I got excited - Nice way to throw us off, Sheamon  :D ;) :p

You ALMOSt had me. But then logic kicked in. I've known for awhile now that only the UK version of Scifi gets anime. Still, as long as i get my fill of Farscape on the US version, I'll be fine.

This isn't fair. 3000 miles in either direction people are getting good anime on television, and right between it, the east coast of the U.S. gets zilch. Cute attempt though Sheamon, you almost had me for a second.

Ugh, Sheamon you got me. I was just ecstatic when I read that SciFi was bringing back anime...but only in the UK? That sucks...

Sigh... just when I thought the GameFaqs Anime board couldn't get any lamer (this is the board that talks about tying soccer moms up and forcing them to watch anime, how many ways to kill Hamtaro, etc... -_-) Now got people so unoriginal they simply cut and paste my post.

U.S. Sci-Fi should learn from Toonami and Adult Swim. Anime IS a good thing.

Oh cool, there are people from here who visit GameFAQs anime board too. I find that board to be lesser in quality compared to TZ though. I guess we're are that good of a site. :)

Uh, that's not really something to brag about. You could've at least had the courtesy to credit Sheamon or to type it up in your own words.

That's not cool. Taking someone's words and posting it and saying it is yours is totally wrong. I had it when sites do that with my news posts and give no credit. I mean, obviously the original poster put a lot of effort into that post, etc., so discrediting it is a sign of disrespect. Please do not do that again.

Okay...enough of that, back on topic now....

I had thought that Sci-Fi had (at random) shown anime movies late late at night and sporadically for a while?

Unless I'm just astronmomically behind or something...

Well, I 'm actually glad it's not the American Sci-fi channel. Why? Because I don't get Sci-fi unless I want to pay an extra $50 a month for digital cable. I know that's a selfish reason, but oh well. :p

Unless I'm just astronmomically behind or something... Up until a couple years ago Sci-Fi channel US showed a grotesquely edited anime feature very early Saturday mornings, and every day for a week in July. These were mostly 45 minute OAVs that were padded out to 2 hours with commercial breaks. With the exception of that summer special week, the only thing I ever saw them show was Fatal Fury.

even CN shows more blood than anime shown on the sci-fi channel. both are on cable and not broadcast channels yet sci-fi heavily edited their anime. strange.

Sci-Fi censors shows that were acquired from broadcast networks (already edited for FCC standards). Even programs made for Sci-Fi aren't immune. I've heard dialogue bleeped in Space: Above and Beyond, and seen panties fogged over in First Wave. With such an uptight BS&P cop there, I have no idea how a show like Lexx got on that channel.

Don't forget Galaxy Express 999 and its sequel :p Each around 130 minutes each and through Sci-Fi editing all were trimmed to around 90 minutes. The songs? Say goodbye. 10 minutes of Captain Harlock blowing stuff up? Goodbye. Huge lines of dialogue that causes things to make no sense when removed? Yep, all gone as well. Pretty cool sequence in the 2nd movie about 5 minutes long with all this psychadelic music and imagery as the 999 flew through space, totally butchered, cut down to about 30 seconds -_- With all the complaints CN has gotten over the years about editing, it can't hold a candle to what Sci-Fi did. Not one of those edits was made because of content.

What a buncha [insert random profanity here]!!!!!!!

I was excited for a minute there. I should have known there was a catch... I don't watch that channel very often anymore, but I do know that they hardly ever (maybe they don't anymore..I don't know) show anime anymore. Like I said, I should have known it was too good to be true!

So close... and yet, so far away. Literally.

Anyway, does anyone know why Sci-Fi stopped showing anime in the first place? The last "special" I saw was the Galaxy Express 999 movie (also how I got my copy, albeit edited badly).

They had some other anime films, sure. There were just so few of them that they were in rapid rotation, and on those rare Saturdays that I got up early enough to see it, it was always Fatal Fury's turn.

Sci-Fi channel used to be owned by several companies. A couple years ago, it was fully bought out by USA Networks (itself now a wholly owned division of Vivendi-Universal). There was a major restructuring in the programming staff around that time. I've heard that the few anime fans remaining in the company were laid off (along with many other people who appreciated the science-fiction genre), but some of them found jobs at Cartoon Network.
