View Full Version : The splice in Daffy Duckaroo

In the redrawn version, after the newspaper headlines, Daffy's song begins with the line: "Close your sleepy eyes, my little buckaroo / While the light of Western skies is shinin' down on you". Then there's a splice to Daffy taking off all his hats and saying "Howdy, you all!"

In the computer colorized version, after the newspaper headlines, Daffy's song begins with the line: "Don't you know it's time for bed another day is through / So hit the hay, my little buckaroo" Then it continues with Daffy taking off his hats.

So, it seems to me that the redrawn version is missing the line from the CZ version, and the CZ version is missing the line from the redrawn version. Confusing, isn't it? :p

I saw this cartoon today. My God, how do they...how can they allow this stuff on TV?

A '40s cartoon with mid-'60s (Seven Arts) titles and the Native American heavy's coloring were quite jarring. In fact, the cartoon looked like it was playing over the 'net and the connection got jacked up a few times; scenes were perfectly still with the audio intact. I am without words.

Missed seeing this one. Isn't there a scene in it where Daffy points a gun in the Injun's posterior and says "Don't move, or I'll blow your brains out!"

That has been one of my life's mysteries to find out. Since both those lines of singing exist, it seems to me like something was removed and the song was shortened to accomodate for it. When the cartoon was computer-colourized, the scene was still removed, but to avoid that big audio splice jump that would have occurred, the LAST line of singing was overdubbed to make it seem like that's the way it should have gone.

Sure would like to know what could have been so offensive in the first minute of this cartoon....

I'm going to fix "The Daffy Duckaroo," since, I have a B&W Guild Films print with the same splice as the redrawn. Then, I need a copy of the CZ "Duckaroo" toned in B&W and I just simply combine them, and there you are! I'm planning on doing this very soon.

Yes. In the traced version, Daffy's bill doesn't move at all as he says this. Neither does the Indian's lips when he says, "No fit-um putt putt."

I've noticed this difference too, since I have both the computer-colored version and the redrawn. Those two openings scenes sure are different...!

I can't believe it! Cartoon Network's print of "The Daffy Duckaroo" is a 'REDRAWN' with the old Warner Bros.-Seven Arts labeling, like the print of "Daffy's Southern Exposure"??!! Doesn't CN know that there are Computer-Colorized prints available, and that only the Computer-Colorized prints should be airing? And UNCUT as well??
Good thing I decided to take a nap yesterday.
And something more: When will CN get their act together and start rerunning the rare black-&-white- or even Computer-Colorized UNCUT- classic "Looney Tunes" in the Weekday Afternoon and Weekend Morning blocks? After all, I am on an Ultimate Videotaping Quest to have in my video collection the following- all UNCUT:
The Classic "Looney Tunes" originally in black-&-white, but in Computer-Colorized form, released between 1935 and 1943

2. The early Technicolor "Looney Tunes" with the original label released between 1943 and 1945- and the famous drum ending with Porky (not the later drum endings with Bugs! I will not tape those!!)

3. The entire Warner Bros.-Seven Arts original Technicolor collection from 1967 through 1969, now including the Daffy Duck/Speedy Gonzales shorts "Skyscraper Caper" and "See Ya Later Gladiator", the rare Merlin the Magic Mouse short "Hocus Pocus Pow Wow", and the last classic Warner Bros. cartoon, the rare Cool Cat staring "Injun Trouble".
But I only tape on Weekend Mornings, so CN must air the toons I'd like for my collection then.
Let's hope CN finally gets their act together and replaces all those awful 'redrawns' with the correct UNCUT Computer-Colorized releases as quickly as possible!

And to the one with the old black-&-white print of "The Daffy Duckaroo": If you want to do a correct splicing, first find a black-&-white WB opening from the 1942-43 Season, like the CN prints of "Scrap Happy Daffy" or "Puss 'n Booty" (Unfortunately, you'll have to wait for when CN rebroadcasts the particular "Toon Heads" hours those toons appear on. If you missed the "Wartime Cartoons" themed hour where "Scrap Happy Daffy" aired, then your only other opportunity would be the "Tish Tash" Frank Tashlin-themed hour and the black-&-white "Puss 'n Booty".).
Remember to splice in the famed Porky Pig "Looney Tunes" drum at the end of your print to make it authentic.
In fact, you probably noticed that the splicing at the beginning and end of "Scrap Happy Daffy" is exactly the way I mentioned it to you.
IDEA! CN could do the exact same splicing- but with the Computer-Colorized opening and closing- for their print of "Porky Pig's Feat"! Someone should forward that idea to CN right away!! :bosko:

I think we should ask Jerry Beck about this. He has seen prints of cartoons that have scenes none of us have ever seen (Chaser on the Rocks, anyone?), so maybe he'd know what was edited.

I'm guessing that maybe TWO versions of this cartoon exist, the redrawn having one line, the computer-colorized version havin the other. Who knows, this is just my theory. :p
