I know Woody was voiced by Ben Hardaway from 1942-1948, but a book I read says Grace Stafford took over on Woody's voice starting with "Banquet Busters". The book also said she didn't want voice credit for Woody until 1952. Why would she? Most of the cartunes he was around that time had him silent! What was the first cartune she actually voiced him in? Also, Woody's voice in "Drooler's Delight" sounds weird. It sounds like a combo of Blanc's version and Hardaway's version of Woody!

Despite what some books say, Grace Stafford never supplied Woody's voice in "Banquet Busters," that was Hardaway.
Grace started doing Woody in 1951. The reason why she didn't want her voice to be on the credits was because she didn't want children to see that a female supplied the voice for a male woodpecker, namely Woody.

I know it's Hardaway, but thanks any way. I also knew that reason why she wasn't credited. Why were there all of those silent Woody cartunes? Perhaps they didn't have a voice at the time?

That's probably the reason.

That's another example of a WB worker leaving, this time moving to Lantz.

I could be wrong, but I think "Slingshot 6 7/8" is the first cartoon with Grace Stafford doing Woody's voice.

Everyone is forgetting that MEL BLANC was the first who did Woody's voice in the first three or four cartoons in 1940 and early 1941.

Technically the first time she did Woody's voice was in George Pal's Destination Moon.

During those years when ol' Ben was voicing Woody (but with Mel's laugh) we are being treated to this... The REAL creator of the red-headed bird not only writing the stories but actually BEING the star. Ben as creator, writer and star simultaneously!! Imagine the directors (Culhane, Lundy, Lantz or Lovy) trying to reason with him... Oy vey! ;) ;)
