"Bosko's Picture Show" is the new Featured Looney Tune. This is a rather infamous film for several reasons, not the least of which is that it contains Hitler's first appearance in a WB cartoon! Head on over to my Early Years page and you can see it for yourself in Real Video. As always, I'd love to hear any comments people have after watching it...;)

I enjoyed that cartoon very much, but I swear that I've seen it before (on Nick maybe), it was like dejavu. It's nice to be able to see Bosko and co, so thanks for doing that! Also, that was "cur", not that other word, it's impossible to mistake it for something else.

I think there's two copies around. One with the word "cur", and the other with the f-word. The version with Bosko uttering the f-word is probably what most of the people who mentioned it saw (I saw that version myself and Bosko clearly says the f-word). I'm not sure which one is the original version, though.

 Sure does say "The dirty f-..."...and the story I've always heard is that this film was done before strict Hayes-Code laws, and this was allowed. However, when it was released years later to TV, somebody that could do a one-word impression of Bosko just simply dubbed over it, it was like that on Nickelodeon, it and "Bosko at the Beach" I recall being on quite a few times.

Hey, guys...

The inside dope says that versions of the cartoon with "cur" were Nickelodeon's doing. To me, their dubbed Bosko voice actually sounds a little more like Buddy, or like the "weak" Bosko voice from 1930's CONGO JAZZ and BOX CAR BLUES, than like the heartier-voiced Bosko of 1933.

Brian, where did you get that version from? Was that on The Uncensored Bosko, or were you lucky enough to be taping the one time it aired on Nick?

I got it from somebody who knew somebody who knew sombody who knew somebody that worked at WB.

I think.

Oh, ask Jon, he's who I got it from!

BTW, I've never heard the "cur" version. Does anyone have a sound file of it or something? I always figured they just lifted that word from when Bosko says it later in the cartoon.

Oh, ask Jon, he's who I got it from!

I got them in a tape trade with Greg Duffell a few years ago, along with beautiful uncut B&W prints of many other WB cartoons which were taken from original 35mm prints. He hinted that they may have come from an internal source at WB (since Greg worked on some of the recent Chuck Jones shorts, I didn't doubt him). Mr. Duffell used to frequently post on the Warner newsgroup and occasionally on the TTTP. He seems to have disappeared from the Internet.

I made a .WAV file of both versions awhile back... and it is still in my Toon Zone directory. Here it is in all it's glory...

Yup, just as I thought. They took "cur" from when Bosko shouts "Stop! You cur!" at the end of the cartoon and pasted it over "f--k". So "dirty f--k" must, in fact, be the original line!

I still think that Hitler chasing Jimmy Durante with an axe is more interesting than any cursing that goes on in this cartoon. But considering that my Early Years page got more hits yesterday than it ever has before (by far!), I won't complain!
