What happened to Supergirl?

Okay, last last time I checked, Supergirl was an alien shapeshifter by the name of Matrix who assumed the mantle for whatever reasons. A while back, I was suprised to find her a young teenager with appearance nearly identical to Bruce Timm's version of the character from S:TAS. Could someone tell what I missed? Is Matrix just doing a costume change or is it a whole new girl? I remember there being a story from a year or two ago in which, allegedly, the original Supergirl came back from the dead and had a bone to pick with Matrix. Does that have anything to do with the new look?

You're right. It is incredibly complicated. They should've done something like the S:TAS version. No confusing backstory, none of this Earth-made Angel stuff. Of course, they didn't have Bruce Timm and Paul Dini back in '85.
