View Full Version : Just a Very Important Warning....

I suggest that nobody goes online today after 8PM. According to my newspaper, the "Code: Red" virus is supposed to strike again at 8PM/7PM central. For that matter, I suggest turning off your computer. Just a friendly warning, and I hope nobody here gets this virus. To let you know what it does, the virus places the text "Hacked by Chinese" on webpages, and slows down computers at incredible rates. This virus has also been trying to knock the White House website offline. It's already hit 250,000 computers, so just take my advice. I suggest turning on your computer again at least ten or twelve hours after the worm starts spreading. Sorry if it's off-topic, but this is important stuff!
You can download the "patch" at this address:

I hadn't heard that, but thanks. I'll turn this one in Midland off tonight for sure. Say, wasn't there an episode of "The Jetsons" where a virus of that name causes all the computerized devices to turn against the humans?

Thanks for the warning Thad, but sad to say our computers have to be on at work at that time.

I suggest you should, I don't really know, but it's better to be safe than sorry. The patch isn't that big. It's less than 300KB!

Does it effect Windows 98 computers?
I'm scared, better head over to the Story Board now...:o

You should be safe on an iMac, Andrew. Hopefully I'll be safe with my Windows 98.
By the way, the worm is named after the new Cherry Mountain Dew, which is called Code: Red and is popular amongst computer programmers. I find it mighty tasty, m'self, from the one time I've tried it, but I'm trying to wait for it to come out in 2 liter bottles or cans since I don't like paying for those little bottles...way too expensive.
My understanding is the "worm" (different from a virus) uses your computer to try to damage government websites. This would explain why it could slow down your computer a lot.
Here's an article on Code Red here http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010731/ts/tech_codered_dc.html
It says that if you do manage to catch the worm, you can get rid of it by turining your computer off and back on. I would still strongly recommend getting the patch for those who are vulnerable.

No, Sveven, to quote the article...
The worm, which stealthily gains entry to Web servers when users call up a page, attacks computers running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating systems. Windows 95, 98 and Me users are not generally vulnerable.
So only people with NT or 2000 should worry. You should be O.K.:)
