This thread was made from the Nintendo 64 SUCKS! thread, and since that thread was locked because of it's contents, Dark Spider and I have decided to make a different thread, so you all can continue the friendly discussion from the above thread, w/o the flames above it..now then..

Am I allowed to make posts about roms? Or was that closing just because of the flaming nature of that thread.

I'm refusing to buy ANY and ALL videogame systems from now on, unless they have at least 5 decent side scrollers.

Unfortunately for the system makers... I don't see it happening much soon.

Side scrollers? Eek. Good luck. Although I do agree with you, I just can't see this happening... with the exception of the GBA, of course.

We really need a good, new, Contra game too. :D

Ok, no more talk from me about that stuff. I'll keep it to myself.

Back on topic I really wish RPGs would stop trying to go style over substance. I'm not an RPGer who thinks anything post 16-Bit sucks but titles being sold just for flash and no real depth is really getting on my nerves. Why can't developers make games that have good graphics and [GASP] have depth too. But I guess with new technology that won't happen anytime soon.

I just think that the 16 bit era, and what came before it, tends to be protected by the "Sweet Fog of Nostalgia" (TM) for older gamers, and for the newer ones the graphics all look the same. Or something.

On the other hand, I guess we could blame it all on Final Fantasy VII. For the North American game playing audience FF7 made companies realize that RPG's can sell well (really, really well) in North America. The problem was that because FF7 was critically acclaimed for it's graphical accomplishments and that's what a bunch of developers tried to mimic because they thought it would sell well, and it did.

FF7 did help expand the RPG market for North America, but with an expanded influx of games the "quality to crap" ratio just got larger, and thus more noticeable. Before since the market for RPG's was considered smaller fewer titles got in to NA and were screened more rigorously to be sure that they would make a profit. Of course this meant that the market was kind of starved. But thanks to FF7, which since it offered something for RPG starved NA gamers it therefore had a huge demand, more companies wanted to cash in on the success that the game provided. In the long run we get more RPG's on the North American market. The bad side is, of course, more noticeable crap titles. But the good side is that we get a better chance to see some more gems on our side of the Pacific, and with that my favorite genre of RPG, the strategic RPG, found it's own comfortable little niche over here. :)

I agree with you man RPG's shouldn't loook to graphics wise but not to bad where there just a plain square.

Overall though RPGs are pretty good. The crappier RPGs are getting lower in number. Having played PS1, PS2, DC, I can say the RPGs that we get outweigh the crappy ones. Sure some stinkers get through (I'm looking at you Legend of Dragoon) but quality seems increasing to me.

Yeah, we do. The GBA seems like a nice place to put one, but I can't see any Contra material--with the exception of ports--making their way to the GBA.

In fact, that seems to be the GBA's main problem... there are a lot of ports, but there aren't really any substantial new games. Sure, the ports can be enjoyable (Mario World, Rayman, Street Fighter, Final Fight), but overall, wouldn't you buy a system to play new material?

Er, I'll shut up now. :p
