I came across this great website today called "Cover to Cover": http://eega.net/covers/fromto.html. This will keep you busy for awhile. It is an extensive gallery / archive of vintage comic book covers featuring many classic characters. There are sections devoted to Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Popeye, Woody Woodpecker, and lots more. Check it out! There is stuff in there I'd never seen before. Such as Speedy Gonzales' own comic book and Barney Bear sharing the cover with "Our Gang"! It is occasionally a bit slow-loading if you are a poor soul (like me) with a modem connection... but it is worth the wait!

That is a great site! I just noticed how very different the characters looked in the comics. For instance:

Bugs has no chin most of the time
Daffy stays short and round and he never has a white ring about his neck
Sylvester has a patch of white around his eyes.

So I guess the comics really were viewed as separate from the cartoons.

I also enjoyed the Pogo section, I didn't know there was a Pogo Poop Book:p

What is "Our Gang?" Do you mean "Beans Gang?"

I don't have time to look at that site right now.

Beans Gang was based on "Our Gang," a popular series of live action shorts about a group of kids, I think they are the same as the "Little Rascals" (I think that's what the shorts were called when synidicated to television).

It seems that Tom and Jerry eventually took over the "Our Gang" comic books.

Our Gang is another name for the LITTLE RASCALS, or some other group of human kid stars. Interesting that this was brought up, since I wen to a comic show today, and bought a few interesting comics. One of them was an LT&MM issue, with Bugs Bunny jumping on springs to catch a baseball, the other was a Bugs Bunny's Christmas Funnies issue, with Bugs, Elmer, Porky, Sylvester, and Tweety singing carols. The other was a Walter Lantz comic, with Andy Panda, Woody Woodpecker, Oswald Rabbit, and (shockingly) Lil' Eightball!

That's interesting. The Warner ones are quite difficulat to find, I've seen a handful of them on ebay, and I have actually read that early Dell one with Porky raking leaves, as I saw it at an antique store. (8 bucks with a damged cover, though, so I didn't bother buying that.) I DO happen to own THIS (http://eega.net/covers/warn/looney/giants/w_bbcf_08_00.jpg) one. I had seen that Speedy one before, and I believe he only had one starring comic book.
