View Full Version : Opinions Wanted: Member Titles

The way things are set up now, you are a "Newbie" until you have 10 posts, after which you are a "Member". Harley likes the idea of eventually becoming an "Animaniac" (250 posts) and then a "Freakazoid!" (500 posts). The problem with her idea is that these titles apply to every board; they aren't customizable for each one. "Animaniac" wouldn't really work for someone on the WF or TTTP boards. So I'm looking for some ideas on what titles we should have. I was thinking of maybe Newbie > Junior Member > Member > Senior Member. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

I don't know how it could be resolved, It would be odd to use names like "Animaniac" on boards that never talk about those sorts of things. So I guess having something that is either non-cartoon related or non-cartoon specific (I don't know how that could be done, progress until you become a director, or a supreme ruler of the universe, or to old cheese). You could maybe find more eloquent/funny words for member/junior member/senior member and such.

Too bad you can't have board-specific names, you could call newbies at TTTP Pussyfoots or something, and progress to a Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck.

I like the idea of progressive poster labels. Too bad they can't be customized for each board, but like Jack said, maybe we can come up with some creative stuff that isn't too limiting. Personally, I think it would be a crime to not have one of the higher levels be "fanboy."

Well? Suggestions, anyone?

Jack

I like "fanboy". You can play arround a lot with that sort of concept, like Cartoon nut or something, I dunno, you'd need people more creative than me to think it all up.

Perhaps our titles could reflect the names of animation greats. X number of posts makes one a Friz Freleng, Y number of posts equals a Tex Avery and after Z number of posts one is crowned a full Chuck Jones. On the other hand it seems a little too arbitrary to rank these cartoon gods into some sort of hierarchy. How does one decide which order to put them in? Who is greater than whom? Though of course the lowest poster numbers will be referred to as "Kellners"...watch them run their tuchuses off to beat that'un! :p

How about:

Baby 0-15
Laughing Boy 15 - 100
Causal Fan 100 - 200
Toonster 200 - 1,000
Toon 1,000 - 1,500
Loon 1,500 - 5,000
Fanboy 5,000 - 10,000
Super Fanboy 10,000 +

Well I guess the number need a bit of tweeking

If Freakazoid can't be the top level, it should be Chubby Baby.

How about...

In-betweener = 10+ posts.

Inker = 50+ posts

Colorist = 100+ posts

Animator = 250+ posts

Director = 500+ posts

And I don't like the personalized titles for the moderators. They should be "producers," all of them. That way we know they're important, but can rag on them for being useless. :P

I like being Supreme Ruler of the World!

Actually, that's my old title from the WBC, so I'm a stickin' with it!

Have a good one!

Well, all right, since you and Brian own the thing, I suppose you can keep your titles as Lord High God and Lady High Goddess of Interconnectivity. But do you really want Romey and Colin and Craig to get too uppity? ;)

I realize that only the Admin can create their own titles. (Gee, I wonder why? ;) )

Thought it would be neat to have the title: Big Ears.

But then I suppose everyone else would be breaking down the TZ door to get their own personalized title.

Hey, how about for making 2,000 posts, we give the title Craig, hee hahahaaa, NARF! ;)

Fun Fact:Did you know that Colin is CO-OWNER of Toon Zone?? Yes... that means he too is a Toon Zone Head Honcho, just like Brian and Harley... so nyah!!! =P

...I shall now place you on... "The List" (cue evil music)

The last person to be placed on "The List" was never seen nor heard from again... rumor has it he was mauled by a group of Angry Gazelles....

You're going to put me on VH1?! That's not as harsh as, say, E! Entertainment or QVC. It's a vast improvement over MTV, for sure. Guess this means I get my own Behind the Music, too.

I'll also need to see your license and registration for this website. Please have your proof of insurance, too. I may have to perform a breathalizer test to verify you are sober enough to operate this website. Just be thankful I'm tired and not in the mood to do a full body cavity search.

Don Jamie would be wise not to taunt the great and mighty Colin. Those who have provoked his wrath in the past have been exiled to the jungles of Canada...or sometimes their bones have been found bleached under the unforgiving sun in the deserts of Cooter, Missouri. Toonzone consumes his life so utterly that he devotes his every waking second to it. In fact, I've heard he's gone as far as taking a vow of celibacy...as did his father, and his father before him, and his father before him. ;)

Dr. Belch would be wise not to misspell the greater and mightier don Jaime. ;) At least you got the original pronunciation right.

The Canadian jungle? The Cooter desert? Those are half-mile hikes at worst. Colin ain't much of a threat if he can be defeated by Bill Nye, Speed Walker. Seriously, Belchie, what's the worst he can do? Send me to my room? Pull down my pants and spank me? The gazelles frighten me more, and they're just glorified goats.

And I note he proudly declares himself "Most Uppity." This is exactly what I warned Her Holiness about, but did she listen? Noooo. Okay, she listened, but she poo-poo'ed it so she could keep her title. Meanwhile, you and I are still boring old "Members." Sigh....

FYI, right now it's set to go from Newbie > Member (10 posts) > Senior Member (500 posts) > All-Star (1000 posts).

Yeah, I know it's lame. I'm still open to suggestions...

How bout this then... when you can make a substantial donation to Toon Zone... not truly financially, but through hours of hard work and labor; blood, sweat, and tears; dealing with uploading from a pathetic school server, trying to find time to work on Toon Zone stuff while not neglecting your "Real Life" responsibilities such as managing to focus on your studies so you can graduate college... THEN you can have your own personalized Title...

Romey and I have been with Toon Zone for quite some time (yes, I've been around longer...) and we've both managed to find a balance between School Studies and Toon Zone. Craig, Romey and I have all also managed to find time for the people who matter, we don't let Toon Zone neglect our friends. We help each other out, both online friends and real life friends. Toon Zone is much more than a web site to us, it's a part of life... and as a part of life we've been learning how to manage our time so that we can attempt to contribute to Toon Zone while not slacking off in our other responsibilities.

Why do the three of us, as well as any of the other Admins in Toon Zone deserve to have our own Personalized Titles... think about it... You guys may not see us doing a whole helluva lot on the outside, but internally we do stuff for Toon Zone. There's also the emotional support we provide for each other... not only as co-staff... but as friends. We all have the ability to see when we're starting to take on too much here, and we all are more than happy to help each other out if needed. Yes, everyone on this board may be a family... but the staff is a family in itself as well... We are constantly there for each other, making sure everything is okay... and I'm not just talking Toon Zone... if we've got problems in life, we ALL are more than happy to sit down and listen and help out.

Now tell me... why don't we deserve special titles? Just because we don't put as much physical work into Toon Zone as say Harl does... honestly, that's not really possible... This is mainly Harley's baby... and I'll be the first to admit that... however, she knows she has limits... which she often pushes... but she does know when is the time to ask for help. Because we don't do as much work on this as Harl does that mean we are any less deserving of titles? I think not... There's a whole helluva lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes, and that's mainly what we are responsible for... Harley does a LOT of the technical stuff... but we do a lot of other stuff... besides maintaining the boards, sections such as the WBC, the links section, the news section, the main TZ page and more wouldn't really be possible if you didn't have us. Heck you know how much of the vB coding you guys wouldn't have it were not for Romey? ...no spoilers, no subscript, no superscript, no strikethru... The sites on the links page don't just automatically end up there... someone's got to approve all the sites that get submitted, making sure that they are suitable for a family audience... that's only part of my job. How bout all those fan fics you guys write... thanks to Me and Craig (tho mostly craig these days since I spent the school year swamped) those stories get proofed, formatted and thrown into the Fan Fic page...

I'm not tooting my own horn, I'm just telling it like it is... Don't say things about the staff when you really have no idea what they all do. We work just as hard as everyone else to keep Toon Zone running.

Now... Answer me this... Do we deserve our own personal titles... I think the response is a VERY emphatic HELL YEAH!

Craig Marinaro

Yeah! Um..."work"! Right...I do that! All the time!

And at any rate...uh...Brian does less than any of us! ;)

Seriously, though...while Colin's post appears to be a caffeine-induced overreaction to what don Jaime obviously intended as a joke (not to mention using the "h" word more times than I'd care to count), the sentiment is accurate. We all chat pretty regularly on AIM, and have a lot of fun. And whenever any of us has problems (anything from a life-altering crisis to a simple lousy day), everyone else is very quick to support.

Now, what exactly that has to do with administrators getting their own titles is anyone's guess. But don't worry about me getting uppity...I wouldn't want to have any sort of title that put me on a higher standing than everyone else here. People like Sharklady and Brainatra have been here just about as long as I have, and they're at least a dozen times smarter than me to boot. Only way I got where I am is through my roguish good looks and natural charisma. That, and the fact that, due to the thus-far-identified thirty-two mental illnesses from which I suffer, the nice IRS man lets Ms. Harley keep 50 bucks a month!

Colin,
Thanks for jumping to our defense, but chiiiiiiiill.
He was just busting your chops and you let it get to you. It's all good. Just relax. =)

But I've noticed lately that no one actually knows how much work I do and I just wanted to clarify that. I've had the odd incident of someone jumping at me for not finishing something as quickly as they would've liked and it bothered me more than I thought it would. I'm not looking for pity on this one. I take it all on because I choose to. Just looking for some understanding and need to rant a little.

Harley's Rant:
Technically, I have three jobs.
1) The day job. I get in at 8:30am and leave anywhere between 5:30 and 8:30pm, depending on how much work needs to get done. I work for Kent Datacomm, a Network Integrator. Inside Sales.

2) Toon Zone. Which is a full 2nd job, in and of itself. I love doing it, but it's amazingly time consuming. The customized look and design of all the boards took me a week and a half of 3AMers and later to accomplish. I did it because I care and wanted everyone to have them in a timely manner for their enjoyment. Luckily, I had two days off from work to do more work on them.

3) Freelance artwork and webdesign. My partner in crime, Candice, and I do websites for small businesses and occasionally I'll come across an opportunity to do artwork. Those who don't believe drawing is time consuming are wrong. Not if you're really putting yourself into it.

I think that if I actually run into a day where I have nothing to do, I might go insane. =X

But worry not, every now and then, I do see the light of day. Yes, I do go out and see Brian, but.... contrary to popular belief, I do enjoy participating in a variety of sports related activities. Baseball, basketball, volleyball, karate, rollerblading. I'm not capable, or insane enough to sit in front of this screen allll the time.
End Harley's Rant

Well, I'm off! I think I'll go chill on the terrace for a little bit and enjoy the evening sky. Take care, all!

I've never even met Harl personally, and I can't vouch for most of the stuff she mentions (frankly, I don't even believe parts of it--mostly the stuff about her seeing the light of day). However, despite the limitations Internet communication presents, I can pretty confidently say that she is one of the most dedicated, caring, hardworking people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. She regularly stays up waaay into the wee small hours of the morning, and sometimes even later than that. Offhand, I can only think of two or three times I've ever spoken to her when she wasn't doing something constructive. Every free minute that isn't spent doing actual physical work, the little wheels in her brain are turning trying to think of new ways to improve ToonZone.

And yet, she's never so caught up in what she's doing that she's off in her own little world. If any of us ever has a problem, no matter how small, she's always there for us to vent to. *ALWAYS*. And no matter how petty our problems may be, she always takes the time to talk, encourage, uplift, entertain, or whatever else we may be in need of. And she'll spend hours at a time talking and comforting, if necessary. She has the patience of a saint, but she's much more fun to talk to than most saints. ;)

She's also a wonderful boss (and she has no idea how grateful I am that I don't get paid--because of that, I can still brag that I've never done an honest day's work in my life!). She's so busy handling grander issues these days that she can't afford to be involved in every little aspect of day-to-day ToonZone activity. But if I ever have any problem putting up a news article, or, um...whatever the heck else it is I do...she's ready to drop whatever she's doing with absolutely no complaint and help.

So...yeah. She's really a great person, make no mistake about it. Her drive and ambition, and her ability to put things in perspective, and the fact that she's never once yelled at me despite how unbelievably annoying I can be...I just find it absolutely astounding. If God ever threatens one of those dealies where he's gonna destroy the world if I can't find a dozen or so good people, I know the first person I'm going to.

Bill Gates, to see if maybe he can buy the Good Lord off. Do you have any idea how much work it'd be finding decent people?!

But if that doesn't work out, I'd go to Harley. Yeah, definitely.

As for possible succession-tiles for the rest of us, how 'bout something like:

Oosh! I better drop the gags and clarify.

The administrators do a ton of work and deserve every ounce of respect they get. This should be reflected in a single title to designate them as the officers they are. The office should be recognition enough of the commitment the admins make to this site. If they want a personal ego stroke, they should pick an avatar like everybody else, rather than having a special individual privilege available only to a select few. As admins, they represent not just themselves as individuals, but each and every member and the community as a whole. The title should be uniform for admins as well as members.

And Colin, I'd like to remind you that just because I'm not an admin, that doesn't make me any less of a human being or mean that my plate isn't full, either. Relax. I didn't take you seriously when you started talking about gazelles, don't take me seriously when I talk about Bill Nye.

Where is the fun in that? They run the TZ so they sould have the right to call them what ever they want (within reason). Personally I don't mind and would rather talk about what the rest of us would be called.

Well, I've still gotta disagree. It's not so much ego stroking as tradition, certainly in my case. Let me explain. It has to do with the origins of the WBC and Toon Zone.

The WBC was started on Prodigy Classic by a fellow named Devon Thomas back in '95. It was one of the two posts he made. The second being maybe a year later saying that he was happy that we were able to keep it together for so long. The *P boards, as we affectionately called them, were pretty much just a list of posts. Imagine the WBC only existing because in this mass of posts because we put, "WBC:" in the beginning of the subject.

For awhile there, there was no leadership thing going on. Just for the heck of it (which actually took a lot of courage at the time, considering how shy I was), I asked if anyone would mind if I took on leadership of the club. Jokingly, I declared myself, "Supreme Ruler of the World" and made jokes about still having to do my own laundry. But it stuck and we actually somehow built a whole structure around it. So, it's a title I've had since I was about 15 or 16, and that's why I'm keeping it. Sentimental Reasons and Tradition.

For those who don't know, on the *P classic board I was Dot for a year or two before switching to Harley. I think I'm keeping that one. ;) I think I also went with her because I could do impressions of her at the time. I was the SROTW.
---Linda/PennyCat, was Babs and she was VSROTW (Vice).
---Colin was Plucky (Originally Daffy because plucky was taken.). He was ATTSROTW (Asst. to the).
---A fellow by the name of Brian S. was Sylvester and he was ATTVSROTW (Asst. to the Vice). We amused ourselves by coming up with insanely long titles. Sly was the Special Friend. ;)
---Brian Cruz, came by a bit later than the rest of us. He signed on as Bugs (Most likely out of boredom and nothing going on on the other boards. =) I believe he had wanted to be Daffy and that was taken.

Just in case any of them are reading it and remember this, I wanted to give a shout out to George K., Emilia F., Lynn T., Maggie M., Scott G. and forgive me if I'm missing anyone else. It's been awhile.

After a little bit, Brian and I started e-mailing and found that we had a lot in common. I believe our first e-mail was me asking him to write something up for the, "Looney Bin!". We went on to date and you know where we are now. Dang. That was when I was 16. It's been awhile. =X

At some point, Brian, Colin and I started working on our separate web pages. I believe Brian's page was started to help Ron "The Keeper" O'Dell with schedules he could no longer take care of while he went to start on a new project. I had started a Comics Cover Archive and Colin had his own WB Cartoon Page.

Linda and I had come across a rumor that the *P Classic boards and *P Classic would be shut down for good. Not wanting to let the WBC die, I went and started a web page to house our Cast Members List, The Peanut Code (Our list of Rules) and the LB!. I also did an exhaustive search for a decent bulletin board. Most of the *P Classic Members did not move over to the web based WBC, but we did find an entirely new cast of characters. =) My thanks to everyone for sticking around. On a personal level, I can honestly say that I've benefited a great deal from knowing all of you, TZ crew and all who have become Regulars to the site.

A few months before we banded together as a single site, Romey, Gookie and Siren came on and helped us decide upon the name Toon Zone. I believe Craig and Hatter came on shortly thereafter. If I'm not correct, edit my post. =X My memory can be shoddy at times, despite my remembering alla this. They all eventually joined us a volunteers or my asking for help. =X

Brian, Colin and I decided to make a joint effort at a site because it just made more sense. It was easier to keep track of everything if it was in one place... as opposed to being spread across 15 fortunecity accounts. We also felt we'd gain more of a presence as a team. So, we pooled all the money we had at the time together got a web hosting account and a domain name.

We've gone through a lot of changes, design and content-wise. We've grown enough to be able to join forces with Jon Cooke, Dick Grayson, Eric42, Jeff Harris and WB Archivist. And it's my distinct pleasure to know and work with these guys. They're good guys, friends and they know what the heck they're doing.

Just in case there were any worries... I have three loves in my life: Brian, drawing and Toon Zone. It won't be going anywhere for as long as we can afford to keep it around.

So, there ya go. I didn't mean to ramble on so, but my memory's gonna fade eventually and I figured I should write all of this down, at least for nostalgic purposes.

Have a good night all!

Aside from one or two of us maybe needing a bit of a nap, I have a bit to contribute re. names. As y'all might've guessed by now, I'm quite into Road Rovers stuff as much as other WB toons. Recently I've been lurking on the premier mb of RoRos stuff. The heads of that mb are called Pack Leaders. Those who help the Pack Leaders (having the codes, helping edit, can step in if an emergency arises) are called first walkers. The rest are junior members, then after a point they get the title Agent. In light of all this imo those who run & pay for this board (until now I'd never really wondered who was paying for this) can have whatever title they want. If one wants their own title they should make some significant contribution to same. On that score it'd seem to me that Belchie does indeed make a contribution with his weekly reviews; I'd thot he was the official KWB reviewer. It's a tough job anymore & getting tougher, but someone's bound to do it. Apparently he's masochist enough to wade thru all the post-Silver Age drek. Reviewer as a title for Belchie would seem to be in order, he makes more of a contribution around here than I do. Well, I guess that's about it, & even if it wasn't I'm being chased off here anyway. Whatever y'all decide on names is okkay with me. Later!

It's a labor of love; I don't do it for the money (which is good, 'cuz if I did I'd be starvin') or for titles. Actually it's fun to write reviews because I get to do what I do best: pick a show apart bone by bone. I'm a pretty merciful critic--except maybe for "Generstion O!" I seldom outright crucify a show. Even with "X-men Evolution" or "Zeta" I can find one good thing to say. Consider "The Cauldron"--some have said it's fairly good, but as an X-phile and a purist who prefers the comics and Fox's adaptation, I'm seeing every hole in the script. There's pathos, but so far they're grossly mishandling Lil' Maggie (as they have Juggernaut, Kurt, Logan, Forge, and Rogue).

It's still in the default newbie>member>senior member thing. And anyone can specify their own title once they reach ten posts and ten days of membership, which is why there doesn't seem to be much point in changing the board-defined titles.

You & me both, sister. Heheheheheheheh. (No, she's not really my sister, but I do have a brother named Daniel.)

You don't know how many times I have gotten that in my life. A couple of years ago, I had both a Daniel and a Danny in my class, which would probably account for the bad grades I got that semester.

Foist of all, no it's not another subject. It's the same old history. Second of all, how can you not get into the Renaissance? It's got Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo.....FOR G-D'S SAKE, THEY HAVE THOSE LITTLE POMANDER-THINGIES!! WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?!

Did I say 'foist'? Sorry, typo. Getting too much New York into my head (BONK There. It's out.)

That's perfectly true.....when your color-blind and always mixing up pink and blue (gonna try to not imagine that person's baby shower).
You're right about the suburbs, though, good for you!

I actually hafta make an ordered list here....horrors.
[list=1]
"All her neighbors" Neighbors? You mean the loud, beer-guzzling college kids next door? They said that about me?! Wow, I'm honored.
"Danny" Maybe I'm mistaken...but I'm almostsure that I told you, a long time ago, not to call me Danny. Did I tell you that? Or was that 'Dani'? Either way, DON'T CALL ME THAT!!!!
"sweet, innocent little thing" Okay, that's an insult. Foist of all (there's the foist again), I am not little. I'm over 5'5, for gosh sakes! Second of all, 'thing' can describe many organisms, matters, ideas. Calling me a thing could be calling me a phone book.
"when the clock struck ten p.m." Actually, 'night' is the time after dusk, or the time after sundown. I don't know about your city, but here, sundown is not after 8:00 P.M. So night would be around 9:30. Conclusion: I usually start thinking my (ahem) 'evil thoughts' a half-hour earlier than you implied, Mr. Stack.
"this all-American schoolgirl" I am not all American. I am part American, Hungarian, Israeli, Russian, Polish...
"turned into Lady Caligula?" I am not going there.

Only 5'5 well I'm 6'4 and I've been called Little John so don't complain :)

I know it's nothing personal; people in the online games at excite.com piss me off all the time. Complete strangers piss me off...GEORGE W. BUSH PISSES ME OFF! (sorry for screaming, but that just had to be heard)

So, I'm alright with you pissing me off. Everyone pisses me off. Actually, pissing me off is kinda like feedback on my personality. So, everyone please piss me off.
And I'd better sign off now before 'piss' becomes a permanent part of my vocabulary.

Note: I was not being sarcastic. How 'bout that! No, seriously.

When I was a junior in high school, a wise old senior named Cynthia told me, " 'Tis better to be pissed off than to be pissed on."
As long as we're getting body fluids into it, a zoology teacher told me, "Perspiration is nature's way of saying 'Stop that'."

I'm six-foot-one...so from my perspective--eeh, skip it.
You know, I read someplace that a person who is under 5 feet at adult height is technically a midget--which means most women are within a harlot's hair of Munchkinland.

Okkay, as to the height, let me be the 3rd to go on record as being taller than Danielle (6'2 1/2"). Is anyone here any less tall than 5'5"?

Now as to all-American, if you were born here it counts. My ancestors came here from England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, & the Cherokee nation; but I am not British-American, Scottish-American, Irish-American, German-American, Dutch-American, or native American (wait, I am native American, because I was born here); I am American. Simple as that. If you're born in America you are American, all-American, & yes, native American too.

Lastly, as to evening, according to my standards (& they're as good as anyone's), evening starts @ 5:00 & lasts until it gets dark. When you have to turn on the porch light it is officially night.

Okay, I went back to the Old Boards and found the original post (and you'd better appreciate it...took me long seconds of hunting) I actually asked you not to call me Danny girl. It's at the bottom of Archive 61, and both were posted on Friday, January 5.

Danny, Danny girl, it's all the same thing. Don't call me anyof those (including Dani)

[QUOTE]and the numbers aren't back from Gallup yet on "Susan".

Huh?

Useless Fact: My parents almost named me Samantha. Hope that doesn't start anything up (which it probably will)
