View Full Version : Have you ever left an honest review for a fanfic and...
then been been attacked for it? This happened to me just the other day. This girl wrote a "story" on Fanfiction.net that was about 100 words long. It wasn't even a story. It was just pure nonsense. I left a review that said fanfiction.net was for stories not things like this that take 1 or 2 minutes to write. She flipped out and left this authors note in the next chapter that was longer then the fic that was directed towards me. Apparantly she was trying to embarrass me into leaving her alone. Needless to say, it didn't work.
Has anything like that ever happened to anyone else? You leave an honest review and the author (and a lot of the time some of their reviewers) goes ballistic on you? I really don't know why people even bother putting stories up if they can't handle criticism. I've seen authors get really insulted just because someone left a constructive review. If you're polite about it, what's the matter with leaving constructive criticism. Isn't that what reviews are for? To let the author know what the readers think?
I just don't get some people....

Well, no.
I HATE fanfics. I've yet to read a good one.
I let my wit go nuts and relentlessly assault really bad ones.
Yeah, I'm despised over there.
So, thusly, their hate is justified.
As is mine.

I love fanfics, read them and write them. I don't frequent Fanfiction.net too much, but when I do I spend a good two hours there I'd say reading old and new fanfics. I have replied to some, but they're always supportive, and I get great responses back from the authors, and I've done the same when people review my works. I'm sure exactly what made the story "nonsense" since some great stories or poems or quite short, but I'm sure leaving a dissaproving review was the best thing to do. I know it can definetly annoy people, as it has with this person. Have they written other things, or was this it? I would have perhaps emailed them your views, or better yet said nothing at all. And if it really had no place at fanfiction.net, I would have emailed the site about it.

Hehehe. I don't read much fanfic - I'm usually disappointed with what I read (no offense to the fanfic writers out there!). Personally, I tend to end up ticking off the non-fanfic writers - for example, the writers of comic titles at the big companies (DC, Marvel)! Sometimes it just doesn't pay to be honest.
EDIT: This was my 1800th post! Woo-hoo!

I do it all the time. Those 100-word stories in the novels section piss me off. And let's face it...some people can't write. I'd like to think I can. I've written a ton of stuff, and perfect strangers have read it and told me it was incredible. For instance, I've only gotten 4 bad reviews for BATMAN: THE SERIES. Weigh that against almost a hundred people now that have told me they'd watch it regularly if it was on TV. THE BATMAN FAMILY and WATCHMEN were smash hits, even among non comic fans. True bat-fans thought TBF was hilarious. And my own work, like THE GUARD and THE GAME has been received well. So I'd like to think I can write. I've even been approached about co-writing the script for an independant Batman film. I'm working on JUSTICE LEAGUE and CAPTAIN AMERICA adaptions. Not for me., but because people seem to like what I write.
And on the back burner, I've got:
SPECTRUM
SUPERMAN
WONDER WOMAN
THE SPECTRE
THE PUNISHER
THE SHADOW
So...as a writer, I appreciate honesty. If my stuff sucks, then I want...NEED to know about it to make it better. So I figure other people are the same way. But I like to find personal things in other people's work that shines through the crap. That's what writing is about. Little moments that make you go "wow."

I did a couple of Fanfics on Dragonball Z and Final Fantasy and I recieved rave reviews. But I recieved a lot of flames regarding my Pokemon Fanfic. It was a fanfic bashing Pokemon, but it was in the Pokemon section and people didn't like that. But my logic is that since it was a Pokemon fanfic, it should go in the Pokemon section. The flames got so worst that FanFicition.net had to delete the fanfic off the site. I WAS SO PISSED...
But people should be honest in their reviews....but please, review the story and not the techinical details unrelated to it...
Glad to see I'm not alone. :) Guard, I wish there were more authors like you out there that welcome constructive criticism. Yea some people can't write, but then there's the idiots that don't even try and just post something for the sake of taking up space. I don't flame people's stories unless they are really REALLY bad. What is a flame anyway? I thought a "flamer" was someone who bashes stories and doesn't explain why they didn't like it. Mindless reviews like this qualify as flames. "This story SUX. Learn how to write, you moran." I've reviewed stories before and been very nice about it (honest but nice)...and then people call me a flamer. I think they need to get their facts straight before they slap a label on someone.
Barb, yea she's written other things before, but I don't really think that matters. The point is that I don't think her "story" qualifies as fanfiction and it's basically just taking up space...making it harder for other people to find GOOD stories. My hamster could write a better story than that, and it's been dead for 5 years.
Edit: I reported that girl's "story". Hopefully it'll get taken off soon.
I can definatly see why you guys (Zorakfan and Clayface) don't care for fanfiction. Most of it's pretty bad...all the good stuff is buried under all the crap. You really have to do some searching to find good stories.
That's too bad Dark Spider. Some people just need to develop a sense of humor. I've got a couple of DBZ fics at Fanfiction.net myself. (they're humor..and not meant to be taken seriously..I did actually take time in writing them though unlike some people) My penname's Meowythecat if anyone cares. I haven't updated them in awhile. Constructive criticism is always welcome. I can handle it without spontaneously combusting like some authors...

I just began using fanfiction.net again a few days ago, and yes, I've had this problem in the past. I tend to write parodical stories, as well as works that are generally not meant to be taken seriously. In some instances, the writers do not take these as parodies, or do not understand what I'm parodying, and "bash" me for it. I'm not the best writer ever, but I like to think that I'm somewhat talented... but mainly, I write for my own amusement.
But yes, I see what you're coming from. I also hate "reviews" that refuse to delve; it's either "this sux", "LOL!", or "this iz great rite m0re" or something.

Construcitve criticism is good, but flames just piss people off. Not saying you did flame the person, but sometimes people can get real uptight, and get defensive over their works.
I myself have written a few fics. One of which is an X-Men Evolution slash fic. Which just so happened to be the very first X-Men Evo slash fic featured on ff.net. I wrote it well over a year ago, back when that section of ff.net only had a 100 or so fics. :p It got about 20 or so reviews, all of them praising my work, and to continue with more. After a year, I kinda forgot was happening in the fic, and never concluded it. ^^; But right now I'm workin on a Final Fantasy crossover fic. All the FF characters are in high school! :o And madness will ensue. :p

I just wish more people would review my fics.

I don't get very many reviews, but I don't mind. I write for my own amusement, oddly enough, especially lately--I've been experiementing with really wacky stuff. Check out JACOB (http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=805485) if you don't believe me. :D
I just checked that girl's profile and her stupid story got taken off cause I reported her!!!!!! Whooo yeeeeaaa! I got the last laugh after all. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :D
This really makes me happy because she was pretty much saying that I could keep leaving those reviews and she'd just keep on writing more chapters to her dumb "story." She was basically taunting me because she thought she could get away with it. It just goes to show you that if you know that you're right you'll always win...well sometimes you don't win, but....well....you know what I mean! Leave me alone! Can't you see I'm celebrating?

Congrats, Meow. I take constuctive critisicm pretty well- once my enlgish teacher told me my short story was absolutley terrible. I mean, he literally said- "Austin, I', not going to lie- think your story is absolutley terrible,"
You know what I said? "So what could make it better?"
Haha! That's a true story, no one takes it better than me- even if I can't write I can take criticism.
That was in sixth grade, however, so I've evolved in my writing style, in fact, my eighth grade english teacher told me I was the best writer he'd had in at least five years. Take that for what it's worth.
I also hate people who can't take constructive- like they're above it. As far as I'm concerned, no one is perfect, and therefore there is always room for improvment.

I've read some pretty bad ones - I'm currently wading through this REALLY horrible Harry Potter fanfic. This person doesn't seem to know how to use commas.
A typical sentence might be: harry rushed to HEr he was scared "harry" she said "dont be afRaiyd"
Yeah... and it's still going. I really don't want to be mean, but... yeah, it's awful ;)
I don't think I'm the best writer ever by any means, but I like to think I have some talent. If you're interested, go check out my works under Elven Moon at ff.net. The first story I posted is getting rave reviews, while the second, which I might be removing, hasn't gotten any C{ I know they aren't that good, believe me, but I just want to keep writing, trying to get better and better.
WOW... that girl's nuts. She's quitting fanfiction.net cause I reported her. Geeez what a baby. She also labeled me as a flamer and insulted my fics and my site. How immature. This girl reminds me of a little kid shifting the blame of her own decision to someone else. I'm not making her quit..that's HER decision. She's acting like it's all my fault though. So I'm a flamer now, huh? Big surprize there. Certain authors do that A LOT when someone leaves a review they don't agree with...doesn't matter if it's constructive..intelligent or whatever. If they don't agree with what you said, they'll call you a flamer.
*wonders if her stupid reviewers are going to bombard her with derogatory e-mails now*

Wait... she quit fanfiction.net simply because ONE PERSON didn't like something she wrote? Because of one opinion?
Society is puzzling.
