I just wanted to let everyone know, if they don't already, I certainly just found out, that The Adventures of Superman(live action, George Reeves, B&W, 1952) airs just before the late night replay of Batman. For me this is 12:30 AM which means that it is 3:30 AM eastern and you'll have to check your listing for pacific time, because it seems some cable companys air TV land on it's eastern schedule delay, even though mine does not. Anyway if you can figure out what time it's on, and you get TV Land, and your a fan of this classic series, I'm just letting everyone know it is on. The 3:30 slot is not so nice, but you can set your tape or tivo or whatever.

Penguin's talkback thread for Batman was a great Idea, so I'll make this a talkback thread along similar lines, if anyone watches and feels like discussing the eps.

The following text was written by The Penguin and modified by me.

Many of us love the old series from the 1950s. However it doesn't seem like that a majority of us do. Rather than start a thread each day for an episode and get a handful of replies I propose we just talk about the episodes in this one thread.

Every Monday afternoon or so I (or someone ;) ) will post the episodes for the next week and the synopsis for each as they appear on the TV Land website (http://www.tvland.com/tvl.jhtml?_requestid=443824). (The synopsises are small so you can easily skip over them in case you don't want to know too much.) Theoretically when you post it will be before the episodes for the next day have aired, but include the title of the episode in the subject of your post. Please feel free to use the five-star scale, but with the way this would work it wouldn’t be possible to have a poll.

Here is week 1 beginning on Monday and going until Sunday. Each episode starts at 3:30 a.m. eastern. (all dates are of the previous evening)

The major thing I can remember about the Adventures of Superman is the change it undergoes when it goes to color. The majority of the black and white episodes were fairly serious in tone, with people getting killed about every episode.

When things go to color, things get all goofy. One episode has Perry White revealing he's an amateur nuclear physicist. Another has Jimmy Olsen creating an antigravity formula with his home chemistry kit "i wanted to make a new soda drink" A midget martian who can freeze people by pointing at them gets exiled to earth. And some episodes get REALLY wierd.

As a kid, I will never, ever forget the episode in which Superman phased through walls in order to save Lois who was trapped in a mine. Being so young, I tried reproducing the effect for years to no avail :)

I saw it last night, well I'll wastch my tape of part two soon. Is this the famous SUPERMAN and th Mole Men? I thought that was a theatrical serial that was used as the pilot for the show.

I saw "Shot In The Dark" today for the first time and it was pretty good. Though I thought that the coin in Clark's pocket protecting him from the bullet shot at him was rediculous...wouldn't everyone have been smart enough to know that that bullet would have tore that coin to kingdom come? That was enough evidence for them to beleive Clark is Superman...they should have known...how could they have been so dumb? Especially Henderson.

I saw "The Defeat of Superman" today and I thought that the Kryptonite looked kind of stupid...sure, I know it wasn't real Kryptonite, just synthetic Kryptonite...but it didn't glow or anything...and they kept on calling the Kryptonite "metal." Isn't Kryptonite a "Rock," not a "metal." I suppose there could be peices of metal in it though. However I did here them call the Kryptonite a rock once...but referred to it as metal all the rest of the time...plus, Lois acted like she didn't even know what Kryptonite is, when she had seen it before, previously.

I just watched the last three eps. Here's my talkback.

Superman in Exile: Ever watch a movie like Electric Dreams or [Short Circuit[/i] and laugh your butt off at the writer's ignorance of the technology of the subject matter. You'll love Superman in Exile with it's "nuclear reactor" and Superman turning glow-in-the-dark.

The Ghost of Scotland Yard: I really like the mystery episodes, but The Ghost of Scotland Yard was a weak one, with a conclusion obvious from the start and no real creative use of Clark's powers like in No Holds Barred and Five Minutes to Doom. Nice use of super speed and super-throwing-strength in the end.

The Dog Who Knew Superman: I was wondering how they would have perman fly down the well after seeing Dean Cain do it the other day on Lois & Clark. They went for burrowing underground instead, but it looked pretty good considering the limitations. I'm not a fan of the bad-guy-tries-to-figure-out-Superman's-identity-and-blackmail-him episodes. This one was kind of cute. Clark understand's Dogspeak!
Lois: Jim, you have just been elected for the genius of the month club.
Lois, you just blew my mind!!! Superman wants to save Corky and doesn't care about any other dogs. :p Clark goes through all that trouble and Lois and Jimmy just go and bring the dog back to the gangster. Doh! :p

I just watched my taped coby of "Panic In The Sky" that was on recently and it was a really cool episode...there was a "Superboy" episode as well as a "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman" episode that was very similar to "Panic In The Sky." He speeds into outer space to smash an asteroid falling toward the earth...and the impact causes him to lose his memory. One thing I noticed though, Clark had his glasses off at one point but Lois, Jimmy, and Perry didn't even recognize him as Superman. Oh, forgot to say. The similar episodes of "Superboy" and "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman" were actually based on this episode...their similarities were not quincidental.

"DUH!" well that's why I missed The Wrecker I'll put up the new schedule and try to find time for some talkbacks to the eps I've already watched. I would like to comment that the second season seems a lot hokier then the first. Jimmy was nearly unbearable in Semi Private Eye.

I've never heard anyone ask that question before. Hmmm...

I've always thought of Kryptonite as a metal. I've heard of other episodes where people try to make Kryptonite bullets. That obviously means it's a metal. You don't make bullets out of rock.

The crystalline form of Kryptonite (i.e. the rocky stuff) would probably be Kyrptonite oxides (e.g. iron oxide is rust) embedded in rock. Metal ore is often found embedded in rock.

No, Kryptonite is obviously a "rock," but you can always find traces of metal in sand and rocks...so really, you could say it's both...what Kryptonite is simply is "A chunk of Krypton." So, whatever element it would be, metal, rock, or ice, (which wouldn't be possible) it would still be Kryptonite...but on Superman, when you hear someone say Kryptonite, the first thing you'll think of is "the green glowing rock." Now I know that there have been occasions when different kind of Kryptonite have been used in the comics and cartoons, etc., but this was the second episode to show Kryptonite, so I would have expected it to be the green rock. The first type of K shown in the comics. There's Red K, Blue K, White K, Gold K, Silver K, and other kinds...in fact, on Superfriends they had other kinds, a certain type of Kryptonite that only Superman could penetrate was used on an episode of Superfriends. So really, I know that there are metal forms of Kryptonite, but you expect to see the green glowing rock on the second episode that features Kryptonite.

The label "Kryptonite" can refer to the rock and the radioactive metal portion could have another name that people just don't refer to.

It's just that when I see a rusty rock, I don't call the rock "iron." It's a rock. I call the iron "iron." The iron ore (i.e. the rock with the ferrous oxide, or "rust") is referred to something else.

You mean when did it change from "The Adventures Of Superman Talkback and Information" to just plain talkback? It's been like that while actually. I figured maybe you changed it.

"Superman's Wife" was actually a pretty cool episode...it wasn't really all that silly like the average episode that was in color.

"Superman On Earth" was great....it completly contradicts the Superman serial, and I'm not really glad that Clark's parents were Ebon and Sara Kent rather than Jonathan and Martha Kent, but I still liked the episode...the scenes on Krypton were pretty cool.

Superman On Earth

This was a great telling of Superman’s origin story. Very dramatic, tragic even, Krypton captures the charm of the Flash Gordon type style of sci-fi of that period.

The Kents sure are bumpkins! Are you sure this isn’t the origin of Sylvester J. Superman?

How does one sow and sheer indestructible fabric?

If the rocket is made from Kryptonian metal, it’s made of Kryptonite? How will baby Kal-El survive?

The oblivious look on the receptionists face when clark sneaks away is priceless.

 In my city, the end of this episode was cut off by one of those local “emergency tests”.

The "Kryptonite" from the rocket wouldn't be harmful to baby Superman because it was the destruction of Krypton, the explosion that caused the fragments to become radioactive...thus harmful to Superman. His spaceship was far enough away from Krypton when it exploded, that it didn't become radioactive. Oh, and I don't know how Mrs. Kent sowed that indestructible fabric...but that's always the way it was in Pre-Crisis continuity...but I don't know how it's possible.

I'm not much on talkback/episode commentary, but I thought I'd let y'all know that you have a fellow George Reeves amongst the fold.

I was actually very surprized that there even was a mention of this wonderful old series at this forum. It's encouraging to know I am not the only person here who acknowledges that there was tv/movie/televion/literature dating pre-1960!

Yeah, I was a little disappointed when season three went color, but what can ya do?

Personally, I love Season One as it was more creative (didn't do the Plot in a Box formula quite as often) and I liked the original Lois Lane. I forget the actresses name, and I don't know why she was replaced, but imo, it was unfortunate. The original was tougher, more serious and independant, just as a journalist/reporterette ought to be. The replacement was kinda weak.
