In Matt Groening's comic series "Life in Hell," I saw a cartoon that was titled "Kids' Greatest Hits." It featured several song parodies that were sung by crudely drawn animals. One of them included three different versions of the Popeye theme song.

One went like this:

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
I live in a Garbage Can
I eat all the Worms and Spit out the Germs
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man

Did Matt Groening just make this up or did kids really sing a song like this?

Hmm, I think that's a school yard song. When I was in grade school, there used to be a Popeye song like this:

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man,
I live in a frying pan,
Turn up the gas,
It'll blow off my @ss,
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man!

Screwy, ain't it? :p  :o

That was another version used in that "Life in Hell" cartoon.

Here's the last one:

I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
I Live in a Garbage Can
I Love to go Swimmin' with Bare Naked Women
I'm Popeye the Sailor Man

I've been singing those since at least my junior year of high school. Another version involves dwelling in a garbage can, a heater, and its effects on the sailor man's more...ahem...intimate regions....

Ah, yes, I remember these. It makes me wonder if an actual kid came up with them---as they do sound like it---or if an adult did. If that were the case, I'd be frightened.

They know their audience!

Yeah, I remember all those parodies when I was in elementary school. It was funny.

Usually it's "Bow-legged Women". That version is in the Richard Matheson short story "Dance of the Dead" (1954).

Shouldn't it be "wimmin", in keeping with the Popeye lingo? ;)

I remember all the above-mentioned versions from grade school, and I read that Life in Hell book back in junior high (boy, was I corrupted!), it was the "School is Hell," title, wasn't it? I still have most of the series.

Anyone know about the "Saturday Morning Cartoons' Greatest hits" CD? It came out a few years back and has an alternative-style cover song of Popeye the Sailor (along with many others that are very cool). The insert encourages you to sing along with your favorite school-yard lyrics, although that CD version only has the original ones.

I wish they had come up with a volume 2 of the CD!

I remember that CD. I also have the videotape version of it. It doesn't have all the songs that the CD does. Most of the video are videos showing the band performing the song with a lot of clips from that series. A major exception is the Underdog theme performed by the Dead Kennedys which has no clips from Underdog.

One of my favorites from that CD was the killer cover of the classic Spider-Man theme by the Ramones. FWIW, the videotape of "Saturday Morning Cartoons' Greatest hits" CD is hosted by Drew Barrymore (in her pajamas).
