Disney has announced Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire will hit DVD on Febuary 26th. There will be a plain and collector's edition. The prices are $24.98 and $35.98. The collector's edition will contain deleted scenes included the scene found on the Atantis PC Game that came with earlier Disney video releases. The deleted scenes involve Vikings off the coast of iceland being attacked and kiled by the Leviathan. This scene was to orignally open the movie.

Aha! Now that would be cool. I'm still a little annoyed that Disney didn't have the guts to throw on an in-progress cut of "Kingdom in the Sun," or at least key scenes, in the Emperor's New Groove special edition.

I wanted to see that, too. I heard they had so mmuch for it. Backgrounds, designs, even some animation done for it. I would've love to have seen some of that early stuff. I heard there were quite a few things cut from ATLANTIS, and I'd be eager to see it,

They had a LOT of stuff done for Kingdom in the Sun when it got re-done... there were lots of animation that had been completed to the polished stage, and animation insiders claim that it was close to 50% finished. At that stage, you've got a rough cut consisting of animatics, pencil test and finished animation. We could have gotten a sense of what the entire movie was going to be like. Ah well.

Did they feel that Kingdom of the Sun was so bad that they didn't want to show it at all?

I will be sure to get the two disc set on this one, as well. Looking quite forward to it!

Even if you don't have a DVD player, you might want to consider getting some of these Disney collector's editions anyway. The collector's editions are limited, and go out of print before the single disc versions. Also, you might actually SAVE money if you buy up some DVDs before you get your DVD player, because you will already own the movies on the format that you want, and you won't have to wind up wasting money on VHS copies now. And you will have a nice DVD collection to start with. I started buying DVDs a month before I got my player, and had a hadful when I got it.

Why does Disney wait sooooo long to put their movies out on video?! It'll be 8 months by the time it comes out since it's theatrical release. All of this summer's movies will be out by Christmas to take advantage of the holiday buying season. I don't understand why Disney doesn't do this. I really loved Atlantis and can't wait for it to come to disk. Those deleted scenes sound interesting too.

About Kingdom in the Sun:

When the flick was close to 50% complete, the execs laid down the law and commanded severe change. There's a lot of debate as to whether it was bad or not... the execs saw yet another musical in the vein of Aladdin, and thought it didn't go anywhere new. However, the plot was pretty odd... Yzma turns the emperor into a llama on purpose, then gets a look-alike on the throne so she can rule. Also, she was a great beauty in her youth, but blames the sun for her aging. Solution? Summon a dark force to blot out the sun. Apparently she had a very cool song called "snuff out the light," which if I don't miss my guess is still on the New Groove soundtrack. Anyway, the climax involved defeating the dark force by lassoing the sun.

Personally, I'm happy with the way TENG came out, but I still want to see this completely different movie. It won't happen for decades, though... Disney's still smarting from the money they lost on making half of Kingdom in the Sun.

are there going to be commentary tracks on the Atlantis DVD? I know that sometimes trying to get the right people involved in these things can sometimes delay the release of a DVD.

Other than that, the only other reason I could think of Disney pusing this one past the holiday season is that they have other catalogue titles they want to push instead for the holidays. And, given the poor box office showing for Atlantis, I guess they wouldn't be in any hurry to get it on DVD.

I can think of only one title that they will be PUSHING BIG TIME..... their HUGE two disc collectors edition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs which streets October 9th. Same day as the 4 disc Godfather Trilogy boxed set!!!
