Today on NICKELODEON the Invader Zim episode Door to Door aired and this time NICK aired the edited version with the VR cut and replaced with a new sequence (not much was changed, but the new edited scenes is kinda lame, but in a way, better than the original scene). Then I had this thought. How many cartoons are there where a scene was deemed to violent or offensive that they had to cut it and replace it with a newer scene? To name one, there's Hare Ribbin where originally Bugs stuck a gun in the dog's mouth and blew him up, but they made a new ending where Bugs hands the dog a gun and the dog shoots himself. Plus, there's the Disney cartoon The Three Little Pigs where the wolf diguises himself as a Jewish peddler which was later on cut, and replaced with a new scene (don't remember which one). Any other cartoons that had an objectionable scene so bad they decided to cut it and make a new scene to replace it?

P.S. Did I mention the new scene in DOOR TO DOOR is really lame?

WILD AND WOOLY HARE has the scene in which Sam challenges Bugs to a shooting contest by throwing a can up in the air. Of course, Bugs shoots the can when it's right in front of Sam's face. When this short was excerpted on CBS' 1978 prime-time clip special HOW BUGS BUNNY WON THE WEST, this footage was altered with new animation in which Bugs fires little corks to plug the holes Sam had previously shot into the can! All we see is the can being corked up in mid-air.

This same edit remained when this short was shown in syndication, Fox and the WB through the nineties.

PRINCE VIOLENT/VARMINT: Sam lights the explosives to blow the castle door down when he suddenly realizes the drawbridge has gone up behind him. Of course, he received the brunt of the explosion. When ABC took over the Saturday AM package in 1985, a new overhead shot was inserted of Sam running across the still-down bridge and away from the explosion. What makes no sense is that the original footage of a blown-up Sam storming the castle immediately follows!

Through the nineties, many shorts in which characters are shot point-blank (the Hunters' Trilogy, THE DIXIE FRYER, A STAR IS BORED, MOUSE WARMING, MY LITTLE DUCKAROO) will be edited so that in place of the actual shooting, a still shot from elsewhere in the short of a different character is inserted. (In the Trilogy, it's a still of Bugs looking smug.) The follow-up shot assessing the post-gunshot damage will then be shown.

You might find other such instances in Jon's excellent Censored Cartoons page.

Of course, both of these scenes are chronicled in Jon's excellent Censored Cartoons site.

There's also a couple of scene changes in Friz Freleng's "Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny" movie you can look for next weekend within the existing cartoons.

To avoid using the same "Open That Door" gag with Sam twice in the movie, the desert fort 'drawbridge' from "Saraha Hare" is replaced with Bugs opening a door sideways to squish Sam and then remarking (in a new Mel Blanc line) that no one is there.

Later, at the end of Daffy's high-speed tap dance in "Show Biz Bugs" they put in new animation of Daffy saying the word "ingrates" after the cricket sounds and walking off the stage (this edit apparently was done to remove the dissolve to the pigeon scene in the original cartoon). And of course, they also altered the ending of the cartoon as well to fit the movie's story line.

There were also a few Pink Panther cartoons that got digitally edited to replace "offensive" scenes. The video release of "Super-Pink" has an altered scene. In the scene where the robber is stealing the old lady's purse, Pink comes to the rescue, but gets blasted with the robber's gun, covering the panther's face in soot. In the altered version, the robber sprays Pink with WATER and the results are Pink's face dripping with water!

There's also the video release of "Pink-a-Rella", in which the drunk witch keeps refilling her glass of champagne with wine with her wand, and hiccupping. The altered version has her with a drumstick, and putting more chicken on the bone with her wand. Now she isn't laughing because she's drunk, she's happy because she has more chicken! :p

I recall an episode of "Tiny Toons" (I apologize for blanking on the episode title) in which Buster was going to put Dizzy in an electric chair. The actual shot of Dizzy getting fried was seen in commercials for the show on Fox, but the episode instead had Buster get a sudden change of heart.

It's especially noticeable since the decision to re-do the scene must have been made right away Charlie Adler left the series, so Buster's voice inexplicabily changes to John Kassir's for the final scene.

And although it's been a while since I've seen it, I remember even then noticing that the new animation looked like it was done by another studio.
