View Full Version : Cartoons on TCM
They are showing "The Fighting 68 (or is that 69?) 1/2" on TCM right now. I don't think I've ever seen a WB cartoon on TCM before.
I don't think it was a "One Reel Wonder" though.

I enjoy when TCM shows a toon whose title is a riff on a human movie title. They just showed "The Fighting 69th" (Warners, 1940) with Jimmy Cagney and Pat O'Brien ahead of it...

Was this an edited or dubbed version?

I can't get into Jon's page to see what would be edited, but I think it was dubbed. One scene sort of stuck out, though. There is a black ant with big lips who brought some mustard and sort od sounded Rochester-y. Does CN usually edit that?

I will be fine. They air cartoons without any advanced warning. Is that poorly run, or what?
And you know not to say what;)
Actually, before of after an Abbott and Costello movie, they showed "The Mouse-Merized Cat" last night.

I can log on again again.

I saw that cartoon on either the Acme Hour or Toon Heads about a month ago...the scene was definitely edited. If it was not edited on TCM, kudos to them. CN should take any edited cartoon and move it to TCM...that'll solve a monsterous problem.

That won't solve anything! I never know when to look on TCM! If someone could give me a time when they will air an uncut cartoon, publicize it!

Find out the next time "The Fighting 69th" comes on and wait for it to end. They may play the cartoon afterwards again. I'd also keep a lookout for Abbot and Costello movies, and movies who's titles were parodied in cartoons.
I don't much like not knowing when the cartoons come on from a recording standpoint, but they are still fun to watch when they come on and TCM can get away with anything.

I want to point some things out about TCM and cartoons. Interestingly enough, while as a rule, nothing is edited on TCM, they ran "The Little Orphan" and it WAS edited-doubtless the print they got was edited. They do letterbox anything that was done in widescreen, including cartoons. It would be nice if they could post a schedule of the shorts that they use as filler, but they've been talking about doing that at their website for at least two years that I know of and nothing's happened yet. We shall see.

The problem is, the length of the "One-Reel Wonders" depends on how much time there is to fill between features. So you never know what you're going to get...whether it is a WB classic short or one of those "give me an aspirin" Vitaphone musicals.
What would really be nice is if TCM could play cartoons that prelude a feature. For example, if TCM schedules Hollywood Hotel (1937), play Porky's Five And Ten (1938) which has a part of the cartoon that mimics the feature.
I don't think that would be a bad idea. What do you think?
