Well, this would have been up earlier, but I had to work tonight...so here it goes!

Akira is the big one this week. There were some other titles, such as Ed Grine or something like that for those of you who cannot wait for Hannibal on DVD. Pollock and Sweet November also came out this week, two movies that seem to have a limited appeal. And there's Valentine, which looks to me like another teen slasher movie or teen horror movie of some sort, with the obligatory Scream style cover box art.

But Akira is the only one I cared about today, and I bought the two disc set from Best Buy today. I also picked up the Moby Play DVD, Space 1999 set 3, and set 4. That set me back over one hundred dollars then I was depressed for the rest of the day! I also got volume one of the Big O in the mail today, so I have my week of DVD watching cut out for me.

So, who else got something cool this week?

I really didn't know if I'd like Akira so I purchased the single-disc edition, it was only $14 at Costco so if I don't like it or I decide to some ay buy the 2 disc set I can bare the cost.

I've been watching MSG: 08th Team on CN and I really dig it & think I'll get that on DVD. I never watched Gundam Wing because I never knew when it was starting or ending the run...so it was too hard to follow. I understand their in different continuity but if I like 08th Team should I consider Gundam Wing? It seems I really dig anything Sunrise is involved with.

The problem I had with Gundam Wing was that it wasn't as gritty as I liked. 08TH MS Team showed civilians and casualties (so does Mobile Suit Gundam), while GWing kind of glances over them. It's not a bad show, but my opinion is that Gundam Wing should be viewed first before buying.

If you like 08th MS Team I recommend getting the Mobile Suit Gundam DVDs if you don't mind dubs. If you do mind dubs, then I would hold off on the M.S.G DVDs until Bandai gets the rights to the Japanese track so you can get a subbed version. 08TH MS Team takes place at the same time as the 1979 TV series CN shows on Toonami, and they sometimes refer to one another.

I don't have a Costco here. How much were they charging for the two disc set? Here, the one disc set is 25.00 and the two disc set is 30.00. Considering the second disc is only five bucks when you look at it that way, I picked it up. I got it for 26.00, too, so that wasn't that bad.

I thought AKIRA was set for August. I'll just have to get it this weekend. I predict Titanic: TAM will be #1 for 26 weeks and gross $600 million dollars...

Get the two disc limited edition of Akira. You get no bonus features on the single disc version, and the two disc set isn't that much more that it should break a pocket book. Might have to skip lunch at McDonald's if anything.

I will. I'm eager to hear the new dubbing and check out the new look. My VHS copy is pretty worn anyways.

An animated Titanic movie? Seriously? Who's the brain's behind this one? Maybe they'll make a Notting Hill animated movie soon, too... I can only hope so:p

How could you have missed this one? This is the cartoon where everybody on Titanic are ANIMALS, and in the end, EVERYBODY LIVES! Come on, let's get happy, sing hallelujah, sing all your cares away!

Oh, well, Tintanic with animals.... that makes so much more sense now. Indeed, how could I have missed such a masterpiece as this... I'd be ashamed and or embarrassed to be a VA in this one. Or an animater. Or anything else for that matter...

I'm also watching both Mobile Suit series on CN, and I think I like this one better than the original MS, because it feels more human-driven and emotional/less bland than the first. In last night's episode a butchy female member of the crew actually kicks a self-doubting officer sqa' in the cojones for whining, saying something to the effect of, "See, I knew you had them." I like her a lot...as well the girl the team leader met in the jungle, who is definitely how I see Misty from Pokemon in a couple of years. Yowza.
Rocky mentioned the animated Titanic movie in another post. If that's the sort of thing the masses go for, maybe I can sell them on my idea for an updated Pygmalion set on a college campus, with a Japanese exchange student as Liza and an English major as Higgins....

Most newbies would prefer 08TH MS Team, I agree. It moves along fairly quickly, and it's only 12 episodes, so they get to pack more plot and character into an episode. It's also new and shiny!

MS Gundam is 43 episodes, is visually dated, and crude in some places, so things move along fairly slowly at first, like your typical Sailor Moon season. Like I said before--my favourite part of the show is the second half, when they develop the idea of "Newtypes" and introduce Lalah Sun. (And if I hear anyone make fun of Lalah, I'll take them as fightin' words, guys!) Since Lalah has a strong connection to both the villain and the "hero," things get pretty sticky near the last half, and Amuro starts to become pretty cold-blooded later on when it comes to killing people. Once you get to the part of the show when the Zeon start referring to Amuro as the "White Devil," then the show is where it's really at, in terms of intensity.

Of course, not everyone is fascinated by explorations of the uglier sides of human nature, so the second half may turn off those who want "likeable" heroes. But then, MSG would probably not have kicked up such a fuss in 1979 if Amuro wasn't a hypocritical nutcase and Char Aznable wasn't a sympathetic villain with a vague Oedipus complex.

Of course, all this probably sounds like hyperbole, so you'll just have to go by how reliable my word was in the past.

As for the Akira DVD...

How is the new dub? I haven't heard it.
