View Full Version : Odd Bugs question I was asked

I've been getting some of the weirdest questions thru my Bugs site. Someone sent me this e-mail last week about architecture, which I know nothing of. I was thinking of "Upswept Hare." "Hare-Way to the Stars" of course came to my mind, but the person was asking specifically about a house.

Does anyone have any info I can pass onto this individual?

<< I have learned from another faculty member here at the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California that there is a Bugs cartoon that features Bugs occupying a very modern house with all-glass walls.

Apparently the house in the cartoon matches very closely a real house designed in the 1950's called "Case Study House #22"

The architect of the house (Pierre Koenig) was extremely pleased and flattered to have discovered that the house was in the cartoon, and I want to see if I can find a copy of the cartoon to show him. I have no idea what the name of the cartoon was. The house has glass from the floor to the ceiling, and was a very popular house in the 50's and 60'. Many many movies were made there, and it has become very famous. The house sits on a cliff overlooking the city lights of Los Angeles. You can see an image of the house at:

Thanks everyone!

Hey wait, doesn't Bugs' house in "What's Up Doc?" sort of look the same?

Not really relevant, but I've seen houses that look a lot like the Carson Mansion used in cartoons, usually depicted as haunted or old lady houses.

"Mixed Master" and the exterior of the hotel in "Dime to Retire" are the only other two "modern" home designs I can think of that were used in the 1950s, though the background in the photo looks a little like the "star city" pattern Jones used in "Rocket Squad."

Gentlepersons -

Think 1952-1965...

The california 'glass wall' look started in the v. late 40's, and was 'cutting edge' (locally) into the early 60's - there are many surviving, but the one referred to is the probably the best of the class.

If this was a faculty member of a school of architecture, he/she should be talking about a very specific design - not any home with large windows.

So -

once you have looked up 'Beau Geste', review the 1958-1965 Bugs 'toons for such a house - note that the ENTIRE wall is glass - this was unusual - the exposed-beam ceiling/roof was, on the other hand, quite common
