Aloha all!

Well here is my latest excerise in doing a complete digital drawing in PhotoShop 7. Anyway, on the JL board their was a discussion about the Robot from the begining of JL: Legends pt.1. It has a very Neon Genesis Evangelion feel to it, though it was animated as a lumbering bemeoth.

I wanted to capture NGE feel with the robot, and that's how the following image came to be.

Just for kicks, here is the rough sketch done in PS7, I flipped through a NGE artbook to find a striking pose to 'borrow' as giant robots are not in my bag of art tricks. ;)

Next I used that rough (turned the layer to about 30% opacity) as a guide for the final lines which were done on a seperate layer.

that looks great. can you tell me how you did it? like what tools did you use to make the coloring look like that, as if it was done w/ markers or paint. and how did you do the background and those cool images in the windows?

thanks alot man, that looks dope. peace.

very nice work, I am a huge fan of Evangelion and I have to say you really captured the look of an aggressive eva quite well.

Mecha Washu: Woohoo, a Rei fan!!! I keep a Unit-00 on my workdesk myself, I don't think the boss would let me get away with a Rei in lingerie resin kit. :(
Glad you like the agressiveness of it.

Blackjack: Thanx!!!

well.... this may take a while... probably better told over some sushi and beer... but I'll give it a go here.. :D

It all started, as all great stories do, about a woman. She was ...oh wait, wrong subject.

As stated previously, I did this completely in PhotoShop 7. I used a Layer for every step, the sketch, the final inks, colors, BG, etc. (Note each color has three layers - flat, shades, and highlights.) Once I get the desired look, I merge the appropriate layers together to save memory.
Here (http://www.shaka.com/~bic/er/graphics/vm-LL-EVA0x-layers.jpg) is an example of what my Layer Palette looks like.

I used primarily the Paintbrush tool (B) for all the coloring of the robot and the windows. The new brushes that come with PS7 are very cool, but a tad tricky to work with at first, especially as I generally stuck with the airbrush tool in PS3-6.01. You may have to play with the settings to get your desired look. Since I opted for a marker style feel, I used a lower opacity for my shades and highlights.
To get a more ‘film grain’ feel to the robot, I used the Filter->Texture->Grain set to about 12 Intensity, 50 Contrast, and Soft for each colored area after I combined the flats, shades, and highlights of each color instead of just doing a single grain filter on everything at once to make it feel more natural.

As far as the Background went, it’s the same building in the reference image, though I did it from scratch. I used the Paintbrush tool to make the windows panes and building edges by holding down the Shift key to get a line.

The texture for the stonework is actually just three filters.

Set the colors to what you want (in this case a light and medium grey), the run the Filter->Render->Clouds. This will give you a nice range between the two colors. If it’s not right, just redo the filter (CTRL-F).
To get the cracked textures, do Filter->Texture->Craquelure. (I don’t remember the settings so you’ll have to play with this a bit.)
Finally, since there is motion, I used a Blur Filter. Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur set at about .7 or .8 pixels. Since speed lines would indicate motion, I did not use the Motion Blur Filter.
Speed lines were created by a trick I learned for star fields way back when. It’s really easy, takes only a couple of minutes and you are done.
Make a new Layer (SHIFT+CTRL+N), and Fill (G) with Black (RGB:0,0,0).
Use Filter->Noise->Add Noise at default settings but make sure Monochromatic is checked. Apply.
Go to Image->Adjustments->Levels (CTRL+L) and slide the black way over to the right so it’s practically touching the white slider, then apply.
Next is Filter->Blur->Motion Blur set at an Angle of 0 degrees and a distance of 999 pixels. Viola! Instant Streaks!
Set the layer to either Multiply or Screen at about 20-30% and you’re done.
This trick is very powerful, I have also used it for rain in the distance as in this example (http://www.shaka.com/~bic/er/graphics/VM-BigO-LC.jpg).

I hope that helped. Thanx for the praise and good luck in your endeavors.

not to nitpick but, lex luthor isn't with lexcorp anymore in JL, he's now just a scientist who only wants to kill the JL.
