John Romita Jr. is going to attempt a world record to raise funds for his neice, who is suffering from brain cancer.

Guy Atherton, a native San Diegan and Angela Atherton gave birth to their first child, Jordan Alyssa Atherton, on September 17, 1999.  Just before Thanksgiving, 2001, Jordan began to show signs of losing her balance.  She was taken to Children's hospital the Tuesday after Thanksgiving where she had a CAT scan and an MRI, which showed Medullblastoma, a large golf-ball size tumor on the brain and several tumors on the spinal column.  She was immediately operated on and the tumor was successfully removed.  A course of chemotherapy treatment was set up over the next 5 months.  A stem cell transplant will be given at the end of the course of treatment.  Each MRI has shown significant shrinkage of the tumors. Funds that are being raised will go for any treatment not covered by their insurance, and help with their transition from a two-income family to a one-income family. Jordan’s new baby brother (Benjamin Joseph Atherton) arrived on April 24. Benjamin has brought Jordan great joy and she has taken on the role of, “Big sister” with great delight.

In November, Jordan Alyssa Atherton (Romita’s niece) had a golf-ball-size tumor removed from her brain. She was diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy for the remaining tumors on her spine. The family has set up a trust fund for any expenses not covered by the Atherton's HMO. John Romita, Jr. (Jordan's Uncle) Marvel Spider-Man Artist raised funds at the auction fundraiser and at a comic con convention held in Oakland in April.  He will also be raising funds and going for a Guinness World record on May 12th in New York City. The fundraisers have been spearhead by Kathy Romita (Jordan's Aunt) and a crew of volunteers from coast-to-coast.  John Romita, Jr. will be drawing under Guinness’s guidelines and raising funds for his niece at $25 for a Spider-Man head shot sketch.

If you would like to contribute to the Jordan Atherton Trust, please send your donation to Jordan Atherton, P.O. Box 27543 San Diego, CA 92198.  Checks should be made out to:  Jordan Atherton Trust.
