Perhaps this is worth a look....certainly not an expensive one, anyway. However, can anyone tell me if the "digest" in this case means that this is a bunch of edited-down comics, or does it just mean that it is complete stories from different books?

That reminds me of the Bugs comic I found from the late 60's in which Bugs goes to the drive-in to see "Bunny and Claude," following the story of the first cartoon.

I am going to guess that those are unedited stories. I have a Golden Comics Digest of Tom & Jerry, it also has Droopy, a Disney-esque Screwy Squirrel, and Spike and Tyke. It seemed to have complete stories, as far as I could tell. It didn't cite any sources that the stories were taken from, so it would be kind of hard to tell. Unfortunately, I don't have the digest here, and wouldn't have any access to it until Fri when I visit my parents. The Archie comics digests seemed to be kind of similar to this book, the same size and probably the same idea. They just recycled old stories, reprinting them over and over.
I hope that this was some kind of help.

They probably made lots of Cool Cat and Merlin the Magic Mouse comics. During the late 60s and early 70s, they were just as popular as the classic characters.
They're complete stories culled from earlier comic books and gathered together in one volume, ala Reader's Digest.
Boy, when I was a kid, I had DOZENS of these. I think they began with Walt Disney's Comics Digest, then other comics got the treatment. There were digests made up of comics from Hanna Barbera, WB, Lantz, and MGM. Some digests combined stories from all of the above, except Disney, which was always "pure."
I bought a WB digest on ebay a few months ago for around 6 dollars.
