Independence Day 2 in the Works

Producer Dean Devlin told Sci Fi Wire that he and partner Roland Emmerich are gearing up to make a sequel to their blockbuster 1996 hit film "Independence Day."

"Roland and I, we're back to work on doing a sequel to Independence Day," Devlin said. "I think we finally found a story that we wanted to tell."

Devlin added that he hopes to assemble as many of the original cast members as possible. "I like to think that hit movies are like a cocktail, you know?" he said. "You want to try to get all the ingredients back together again and try to get the same mix. But we'll see. We'll see what we can get back. We'll try to get everyone. We'll just have to see how it plays out."

The first one was great, but do you think this one will be just as good?

Sounds like garbage.... could be entertaining.

Marines vs the Aliens in a ground war from the fallen space crafts.

Still, sounds like they're just trying to make an easy buck...

Personally I thought the first movie was crap. I was happy because I felt that this was a movie that would never get a sequal. I have just one question. Why?

I agree with you on the Why? question.

The aliens blew up half the world in ID4, what else can they do in the seuquel.

Please, (if whoever thought this idea up is listening) Do not make this movie.

The first film was just a cheesy, jingoistic film when it came out, and I could not help but like it when it first came out. But why in the world would they want to make a sequel!?!?!?!?

They'll probably find a home planet.

Here's a geeky fanboy question:

According to the first movie, the ENTIRE alien civilization travels around on that huge ship. Since it gets destroyed at the end of ID, who are the humans going to fight?

i think it would be good, but not as good as the first movie :)

I was amused by the first movie. To believe that something as ridiculous as a pathetic computer virus could destroy the aliens with a language and operating system we could probably never comprehend...okay, fine, i'll buy it. But a sequel is entirely unnecessary, for starters, who are they going to fight? And one more thing, are they going to have the audacity to make the second battle for the planet happen on July 4th?

First of all, Independence Day is one of the best blockbusters I've ever seen. The humor, the action, the special effects, it all works beautifully. But it's not the kinda movie that lends itself easily to a sequel. I'm sure they could come up with something; years ago, one rumored storyline involved the defeated aliens sending a distress signal to a second wave of invaders that would arrive 5 years later. I'm sure we'd receive a premise along those lines. But would it be worth it?

Dean Devlin is right, hit movies are like cocktails. But it's hard for studios to know their drink limit until they're passed out in the parking lot.

Independence Day is the type of movie you only see once, in theaters. you get caught up in the moment and you ride the adrenaline rush.

Unfortunately, I saw it a 2nd time and sealized how incredibly cheesy it was. It goes beyond funny cheesy to downright sad cheesy. I'm not sure if ID4 2 is going to do well.
