View Full Version : Who Reads Only The Animated Titles?

I ask this becuase I'm currently thinking of dropping the mainstream books becuase of my budget and just focus on the animated books. I was wondering who just reads the animated titles. Any 3 count.

I used to only read the animated titles for a while: Gotham Adventures, Superman Adventures, Batman Beyond, and I picked up all but one issue of The Adventures in the DC Universe when it was still around. The only DCU books I pick up are Batgirl and Harley, and I got into them because I liked the characters. To me, the animated books for the most part are cinsistently better. I guess because the stories aren't so complicated and the artwork is easy to look at...

I only read Batman Gotham Adventures, Batman Beyond, and Superman Adventures. But I must admit Superman has really sucked it up recently. Even BB isn't always great. But for the most part Batman Gotham Adventures does ok. My only problem is how buddy buddy Nightwing is with Batman.

Well this isn't what you asked me..........but I used to buy them. I have all The Batman Adventures, and have all but 3 of The Adventures of Batman and Robin. I also have a few specials here and there. And I\m planning on buying the new JL animated comic when it comes out.

I am definatl ylooking forward to JLAdventures. Even though Delaney will be doing some art, I'm still really pumped. But I hear DC will be upping the animated books to 2.25 in November...grr....

I only read the animated titles. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be reading any Superman or Batman stories.

Why limit yourself to 3 titles, I say.The mainstream Batbooks have been really good lately. Tec has been great, and so has Batman. Batgirl, Nightwing, and Robin have also been good reading.

Nah, I think DC is just bumping everything up to 2.25 and that's it. THis sucks for their other animated titles. The animated books have been good, though quality lately has been iffy at times.

Money is why I limit myself. Dang money. Can't read everything, and DC has a tendancy to do these stupid multi title cross over stories that irritate the fire out of me. I wish I could get just Batman or Detective and not worry about it, but they will always do the multi title cross over, and I hate it.

Well, DC will be doing alot more. DC will have a company wide crossover event in December, and BRUCE WAYNE: FUGITIVE will run through almost all the Bat-titles for the majority of 2002. Friggin' crossovers...

In the days when comics were 60¢ and 75¢, these massive crossovers were tolerable and kinda cool. In the day of three dollar comics, who reads them in their entirety? Seriously. Who out there can buy them all and still afford comics from other companies? I can't imagine kids out there spending their money on this crap.

Wanna read my comic collecting timeline?

I started out collecting only Batman Beyond at number 9, and said to myself, okay, I'll only collect this title because the mainstreams seemed to raveled and complicated. I ended up buying all the back issues of BB.

Waiting for each BB issue to show up each month, I had extra cash in my pocket to pick up something new. So I picked up Batman Gotham Adventures, starting at number 20. I liked what I read and ended up buying all the back issue of B:GA.

Finally getting all the back issues of B:GA, I walked into a new comic store that had all their back issues on sale. I found Batman: Gotham Knights for $0.99, and said "Heck, why not give it a try!" To my surprise, that issue of B:GK opened up a whole new door for me.

Reading between the animated books and the mainstreams seem to offer an excellent contrast between stories. I like the fun animated style but I also like the dark grim style of Batman. To make a long story short, I now collect all the Bat titles except for Azreal and Catwoman.

It may seem my wallet gets hit hard with all the titles and back issues I've bought, but surprisingly, I've collected roughly 80% of my back issues for less than cover-price. I go to local conventions which helps me out a lot and the comic shops I go to hook me up with deals.

The animated Batman books also opened the door for the main stream books. The first animated comic I picked up was BATMAN ADVENTURES #1, and since then, the animated books are the only titles I've consistently purchased since then.

I read the crossovers. Although I'm not getting all of Last Laugh, tho. Too much $$.

The way I afford my comics is that I'm a waiter. I leave the place with about $100 a night. The only way to afford comics and toys and gaming material nowadays.

I do! But I've got an ok paying job. Seriously, I think a huge part of the market these days is adults, not kids. At least, in my experience (and in the experience of the comic shop owners I know), we never really see much in the way of kids in the comic shops anymore - its all adult collectors buying 'em. Thats why they still sell - you've got people with real jobs and real income pumping out the money for them.

I have been collecting DC books since 1979, when I was 10. My first comic was Justice League of America #169. I was hooked. I now have every Justice League comic in all their incarnations. I was able to pick up a lot of silver age books in the early 80's when they were a lot cheaper. My biggest score was getting Brave and the Bold #28(first JLA app.) for $60.00. It is now worth over $3,000.00! I still buy about $30-50 in comics a month. Luckily, I have the income to buy them. I usually get all the Superman titles, Green Lantern, Justice League and any Elseworld or special miniseries. I will also get various issues of other titles if they interest me. It get's expensive when multi-crossover issues (ie-Worlds at War).
Although, with the prices going up. I have cut back on the number of titles I might buy.

I may just pick up the 6 issues of JOKER: LAST LAUGH and a coupleof the Batman tie-ins. Given DC's ridiculous Canadian prices, I won't be able to afford too much of them. I've been cutting back on books anyways.

That is very, very disturbing. The comic book companies should give a rat's tail that kids can't afford these comics! Yeah, you have adults buying them, but where is the next generation of comic book readers? I just lament at the lack of good, affordable comics out there for kids. And now you hardly see them in grocery stores or book stores anymore, what hope does the future of comics have?

I collect Batman Gotham Adventures, Superman Adventures and Batman Beyond. The price of a comic book sure has gone up alot some used to be a dime, that was a really long time ago. The new G.I. Joe comic is going to cost $3.00 plus tax.

i'm the opposite...i don't buy the animated titles. the way i figure it is the animated series cant be beat, and while i'll pick up an animated book from time to time, i feel they pale in comparison to the characterizations, art, and stories of the animated series. So i usually read the mainstream titles, since thats really the only way i can get a dose of that universe. i always will have bb, gotham adventures, and superman adventures in animated form, and thats really where they work best imo. and the mainstream titles (action, batman, green lantern, etc) really only exist in comic form and thats where they shine best. well thats just me, but i'm with you DG, my budget really isnt cut out for all the comics i want to get, especially w/ our worlds at war, so i'm probably going to have to cut back abit really soon (especially since i just quit my summer job, arg, the job hunt continues)...peace.

You know what, Derek, you make an excellent point. Especially the Batman Beyond comic, that one was definitely worse than the TV series.

I recently asked a question on another thread who would be willing to defend the Phantom Menace if it was George Lucas' first movie? I doubt anybody would be saying, "But the pod race was cool" if this was his first movie. If this was his first movie, he'd be packing his bags and moving back home. But because Star Wars has been around for like 30 years now, people are more forgiving when it falters and sputters some what.

The animated titles are the same way. They DO pale in comparison to the TV shows, I admit it. The only reason I buy them is because I want some form of Batman and Superman in my monthly comics, as I don't want to get caught up in that mess they call the DC Universe and have to follow ten titles to follow one story line. But I can easilly turn the question back on me...if these DC animated comics were new comic books of a new character by relatively unknown creators, would I suffer their crap to buy them every month? I would have dropped these bad boys a long time ago. Especially Superman Adventures. In what other title would anybody have put up with that horrible artwork Vokes (or whatever his name is) forced us to view? The answer is NONE.

I don't know if I will drop them cold turkey, but I tell ya, Marvel is more and more becoming the company to watch as time goes on, and there are a couple more titles that if they put the right teams on them, I will pick them up, and the animated titles will be the first to go.

Speaking of animated titles, Marvel will be coming out with a new X:Men Evolution comic. They're also working on a kids line.

I've just dropped DETECTIVE and BATMAN becuase of my comic budget, but with BATMAN BEYOND being cancelled, and Superman Adventures being cancelled in Febuary, I believe, I'll be able to get them back on - if I still have intertest in them. As for Marvel's animated comics, both a X-Men: Evolution(like Eye said) and a Spider-Man: TAS comics are on the way. X: E will liekly come early 2002, and Spider-Man will come late 2002, when the cartoon premieres likely on KWB.

I don't read marvel, so that gives me a little extra for DC. I used to collect nothing but animated comics( I have all of the BA and B&R Adventures) but here lately they just suck! I am not a fan of BB so I Definitely don't like the comic. B:GA has gotten worse with each issue as is Superman. So, if I were making budget cuts, I would cut the animated books in a heartbeat and focus on mainstream. Besides, the only mainstream that I read are the main batman titles(Detective, Batman, Harley Quinn, Nightwing, Robin) The rest I just pick up every now and again.:)

Well, with Batman Beyond done in August, and Superman Adventures in Fevbuary, I definatly will hjave room on my budget. Plus I predict 2002 will be the last year for Gotham Adventures as well. With sales slipping, the animated JL comic will be the only animated comic outlet.

Very soon, the JL animated comic book will be the only one I get.

Has anybody here read the animated Avengers comics, United We Stand?

The Avengers cartoon was beyond bad. Horrible. The comic based on it, though, was very well done. It was written by Ty Templeton and it just worked out nice. He was good at doing group dynamics. The art was okay at best. Still, it's no Batman: Gotham Adventures.

Calhoun07

No animated comic is as good as Gotham Adventures.

So is this the final curtain for the animated titles, or will the resurface under a new title later? I'd personally buy a bi weekly anthology that featured stories from each animated series if they didn't want to do anything else with them in their own titles.
