Since several of us are using song quotes for signatures...

I have been trying to confirm something I heard approx. 30 yrs ago, and since we have a good mix North/South...

There was a Civil War song entitled 'The Cruel War' - anyone remember hearing this?

If so:

the (usually) last verse is:

Oh, Johnny, Oh Johnny,
I fear you are unkind.
I love you far better
Than all of mankind.
I love you far better
Than words can e'r express,
Oh, cant' I go with you,
Yes, my love yes.

Part 2:

(this is an open-book quiz - if you can find a printed version of this, please cite it).

There is another verse - I was told it was sung only in the South - does anyone know this verse?

dave

(I told you it was off-topic)

Never heard of the song, but I got good results from Google. Apparently there's more than one version, but the one you're asking about seems to be here

http://www.contemplator.com/tunebook/englmidi/cruelwar.htm

It puts the verse you quoted as the second-to-last one. In case you are curious, here is the other version

Actually...

none of the Google-supplied entries I checked have the verse I know (in which it is Johnny who dies) - anyone else know of this?
