View Full Version : Tom Turbine: Some thoughts on his powers

I think I've figured out the principles behind Tom Turbine's power!!!
As a nuclear physicist, he managed to design his belt which PROBABLY uses a FUSION reaction to generate power-- nice , clean, safe and abundant
when the belt is on, it is generating power-- but at low levels

I've speculated that on his hands are small devices which regulate the amount of power being produced-- like spider man's web shooters in a way
the bands on his arms and legs are EXTREMELY powerful magnets
when the belt is told to generate enough power, the bands too are "powered" on by the energy passing through Tom's body
the magnets then draw in the power straight from the belt
did you notice how the electricity ran straight to them?
when he powers up the belt, he smashes his hands together
which is probably just him touching the magnets to the belt to establish the circuit
he was able to do that shockwave move against Ray by striking the ground while really powered up-- causing a discharge around the hands-- his boots being rubber, he is insulated from the shock

maybe the rings around his ankles establish a magnetic field around his body-- allowing him to use the natural magnetism of the earth to propel himself up
this might ALSO account for his super strength-- he creates a magnetic field around the object that makes it easier to lift etc
did you notice how far J'onn flew compared to flash when struck by Tom?
I would speculate that Martian physiology might be richer in a certain mineral that allowed the repulsion of the magnet to REALLY take hold

If you recall Tom was powerless without his belt
with him being a scientist, his powers are the only ones that can be explained USING science :-)
Tom couldn't break out of the cables because a full circuit was formed to the ground-- the wire was around his neck, his wrists (where the magnets are) and his ankles-- with a straight cord going from his neck to the ground-- creating a circuit with the building and taking away Tom's power--basically electrocuting him if he powered up

Wow.
That's a really well thought-out analysis, GH. I think you nailed it!

Tom Turbine was such a great character and reminded me somewhat of Tom Strong. Maybe DC will pick up on it and work him into the comics somehow.

Nice analysis of TT's powers GH. I think you explained him to a T.

thanks guys

now if i can just figure out the principles behind a power ring or super-speed :D

Good theory execpt for a few things:
1. How is he not vaporized? There is a minimum amount of energy realeased when creating a substainable nuclear reaction. And even two hydrogen atoms converting to one helium atom creates a large amount of heat.

2. How would he start the reaction? Suffice to say, bringing two hands together does realease nearly enough energy to fuse hydrogen.

3. Why would magnets affect anyone? Unless, of course, everyone is wearing iron suits.

Still, he is a comic character, so he doesn't exactly have to follow our laws of nature...

I think he gets his powers by eating Tootsie rolls.

Sorry, probably nobody else will get this, so I'll explain:

The big T on his shirt reminds me of Captain Tootsie, a character who appeared in ads in bunches of Golden Age comics. Captain Tootsie wandered around, usually with some children along, and whenever danger would occur, he'd eat some tootsie rolls (for the added energy that they give) before rushing to help.

I couldn't tell, was he leaping high into the air (much like Superman did in his early days) or was he actually flying in "Legends"?

a few things

im not sure how the belt ITSELF works-- but the magnets channel the energy provided by it into force

as for Jumping, that in fact is the case-- he isnt a flier-- look at him "bounding" towards the screen after the streak towards the end of Pt. 2

well thought out - i still don't get how all of the members of the justice guild fly though
green guardsmen doesn't cover himself in the green like GL does

By only fusing a VERY small quantity of hydrogen, or whatever.

The reaction is started by flipping the switch on the belt; the touching hands together merely starts up the strength enhancement component.

Ever heard of levitating frogs?? Water is magnetic.

Then why are you complaining??

Did Streak fly?? I can't remember.

And I'm pretty sure Tom Turbine did fly.
