Usually, people who refer to soccer moms are talking about parents that are too over-protective of their kids and demand for certain books and shows to be banned or whatever because they think that it's unsuitable for their children to watch or read.

Yeah, I think that's right. :) I don't know. :dot:

Soccer moms usually refer to working, subruban moms that tend to be politically active. For this reason, politicians tend to pitch their messages towards them. Also, when a group of soccer moms don't like something, they tend to be loud about it, and often get heard over other groups. As a group, they value family values. Tipper Gore probably epitomizes them. In the Simpsons where Marge gets Itchy & Scratchy changed, Marge is pretty much acting as a soccer mom.

I have a pretty specific image of soccer mom's in my mind:

Soccer Moms are suburban employed or unemployed middle to upperclass bad SUV driving women, usually with cell phones. These women are armed with a vigilant sense of morals and believe that everyone needs to believe in family and religious values and go around saying ridiculous things like "it takes a village to raise a child". When they are not spending their free time complaining about their neighbors pink flamingos or lawn gnomes to their local home owners association, they are out forcing the community to raise their children by banning books, making sure some movies never get into local theatres, and suing people for putting violence or dirty language on television. They want to make sure that there is no fun or enjoyment while they poorly drive the most popular color of SUV with their simple, annoying, socially deprived children to soccer practice.

Of course...20 years in the suburbs may have made me a bit cynical and resentful of soccer moms...just a little.

Spiff pretty much nailed it, but I like RogueMartian's colorful version better. :D

Why is it "soccer mom" instead of something like "baseball mom"? I always thought baseball had a ton of overprotective mothers put their kids in a crap load of gear for a tee-ball game.

if you want to go for the simple definition route, think rosie o donnel.....

if the rabid fanboys ever had a true to life arch nemesis, it would be the infamous soccer moms.

I think its because people can view those moms, that RougeMartian expertly pointed out, to be the kind that take and pick up their kids from Soccer practice. So because of this, they call them "soccer" moms. At least that's where I always thought the term came from...

You know, I have no idea why its soccer moms instead of baseball moms or something. I'm going to guess at this one and assume that its because soccer became the trendy thing to take children too instead of baseball. I guess at that one too because many kids I knew growing up played soccer instead of baseball, softball, or football. Commercials always seem to feature kids in minivans or SUVs with soccer materials, and many of the parks near where I live have more soccer fields than baseball fields.

I grew up playing Soccer and Baseball. It's just that moms who have kids in soccer are known to be loud. I think of dads when I think of baseball. Soccer moms are overprotective, want their kid in the game, will yell and shout, etc. To add to the politcal term, "soccer moms" tend to be single working mothers, and they tend to vote democratically. This is quite an amusing question to me, because I just finished studying my AP government book, and passed by that term and its definition a few chapters ago.

I think that the 'soccer' part is rooted in a SUV commercial that aired in the beginning of this 'age' of politics.
