I used to be a defender of Pilot Candidate, but every week I seem to be watching it as people watch car wrecks, just to find out what's going on. That and I'm beyond confused with this show, maybe I'm blanking and not paying attention enough, but I'm missing a ton of stuff, so maybe people can answer some questions for me.

1. What is EX?
2. Why does it make Zero's hair glow?
3. That little jerk with the white hair, the one that treats his mechanic partner badly, what's his name?
4. What's his problem?
5. What exactly are the goddesses? Are they like Evas or gundams or what?
6. What is up with the outfits on this show? I can't honestly believe that people work out in shorts that are missing an inch of cloth in the middle and tank tops with extra tall collars.....
7. What does G.O.A stand for?
8. Why don't any of these kids know what a horizon is?
9. What happened to earth or zion or whatever?
10. What is up with zero? Does he have ADD or did he have a head injury that makes him forget his friends and mother back home?
11. The daydreams he was having, what are those all about? He was dressed like Tom Sawyer and it had something to do with him falling into the goddess...I'm still not sure what was up with all that.
12. Did WS actually watch this series before acquiring it?

1. It would seem to be chemical or hormone that those who have it, have limited amounts of and hence can't afford to burn it up in training. Additionally, it seems to have properties that create the possiblity of uncontrolled ESP, which can cause mass destruction.
2. A side effect of an EX reaction from what I can tell.
3. I don't remember.
4. I think we'll find out next episode.
5. They are giant robots with what appears to be a neural interface system as means of control.
6. Chalk it up to an attempt at unique character design.
7. I don't know.
8. They've grown up on space stations and asteroid colonies that have no horizons. Therefore, they don't know what one is.
9. It would seem that humanity had managed to get out and explore space. Unfortunatly, they ran into victim, they've had planet after planet destroyed by victim and all that's left is Zion. It is unclear if this is Earth or some other planet that humanity colonized.
10. It may have something to do with his experience in the Goddess or it may be a side effect of the EX or it might have something to do with his vision in the goddess or a combination of all three.
11. I think it's partially a reference to anime which work in more western backgrounds (like Kiki Delivery Service) and/or it may also have to with the vision he had in the Goddess.
12. Who knows. I think they got it because they had wanted EVA, but IIRC, they couldn't get it, so maybe they went after this because of it's EVA-like elements. I doubt they would have bought it sight unseen, but they may not have had a dub to watch, only a sub. I guess only WS knows that one.

well it that was fun. hadn't had excuse to philosophize on PC yet. BTW, I don't particularly like PC, but it's got some potential and it's incredibly funny sometimes. not gonna buy it though.

8. Why don't any of these kids know what a horizon is?

Sorry but that would be the only question I could answer. And it's pretty obivous, according to the show they live on colonies with walls around them so I guess that's why they don't know what a horizon is or for the matter what a planet is. But still don't they go to school, and learn all that suff. Which proves my fact that this show does not make sense at all.

Teaching kids what a horizon is really isn't necessary, especially considering that if taught it is at all, it'd be later education, like in a physics course or perhaps in a art course (for working with perspective). The candidates are only what like 13 or 14, right? I doubt they've dealt with anything more than general science and basic art. The reason why the other kid would know, is because he's the show's stereotypical nerd/bookworm. He supposed to be there to fill in the gaps in info, when there is a need in the show. Nothing is explained in this show, except when when someone in the show lacks knowledge of what is going on.

I'll try my hand at this. :)

1. What is EX?
Ever read/watched The X-Men? Similar thing. Something certain people have gives them psychic powers, ranging from telepathy to invisibility to psychkinesis.

2. Why does it make Zero's hair glow?

So it looks nifty. ;)

3. That little jerk with the white hair, the one that treats his mechanic partner badly, what's his name?

No clue. Just call him Number 89. :wakko: (I think that's his number, anyway...)

4. What's his problem?

He's a jackass and thinks he's better than everyone else. Beyond that, we haven't been told.

5. What exactly are the goddesses? Are they like Evas or gundams or what?

Essentially, yes. They're mecha, but appear to have something odd... perhaps a soul?

6. What is up with the outfits on this show? I can't honestly believe that people work out in shorts that are missing an inch of cloth in the middle and tank tops with extra tall collars.....

Again, because it just looks nifty. I doubt the creators were going for practicality there.

7. What does G.O.A stand for?

We haven't been told.

8. Why don't any of these kids know what a horizon is?

As was said above, these kids have all grown up on space stations or colonies which have atmosphere domes. Such domes are so close, you never even see a horizon, just the wall stretching up into the sky.

9. What happened to earth or zion or whatever?

It's never specifically said, but Earth apparently was one of the worlds destroyed by the Victim aliens. Zion is the last naturally inhabitable planet humans are living on.

10. What is up with zero? Does he have ADD or did he have a head injury that makes him forget his friends and mother back home?

He's definately a candidate for ADD, I'd say. :D However, the deal with his mother is more likely just growing up... sometimes, after a while, you start losing the details from your childhood. I get the feeling she was killed in the attack the Goddesses saved Zero from, and he has since spent his years preparing to become a pilot. Somewhere along the way, he forgot that purpose, and it was just 'cool' to become a pilot to him, until now.

11. The daydreams he was having, what are those all about? He was dressed like Tom Sawyer and it had something to do with him falling into the goddess...I'm still not sure what was up with all that.

Basically, his subconscious mind was reaching out and trying to give him a swift kick in the butt. He was troubled by the fact he was forgetting his childhood, and couldn't figure out why. Eventually, his mind started forcing him into an EX Reaction and putting him into a dream-state, where he could experience things a typical kid would (though strangely enough, in an 19th century style setting). Eventually, he was able to realize he had lost his purpose, and find it again.

12. Did WS actually watch this series before acquiring it?
Now that's a question none of us can really answer. Someone had to (in writing the translation), but that could have been outsourced. No way of knowing.

Question number 8, about the horizon, appears to have thrown some people. I got that they lived on colonies and had never seen a horizon. But my question was more about academics. If these kids ever took a science class, read more than three novels, or ever saw an old painting or photograph, they must know what a horizon is.

Its only one of many problems I have with these kids, and I want to add one additional question:

13. Zero's mechanic partner, the girl with the cat ears...Why does she have cat ears? Why is she the only person with cat ears? It must be something rare since it bothers her to have them. So where did they come from?

Someone posted a website for the manga of PC (which seems to be a lot better than the anime). On the site I believe it said something like she lost her ears in an accident so they put those cat ears on her head. I'll go see if I can find the site.

ok, here we go. Under her character it says: "When she was young, Kizna lost her sense of hearing in an accident, and she has another set of ears on top of her head. Her partnership with Zero starts out bad (he takes her cap off, which was hiding her ears), but they are supportive of each other."

That is from this site: http://www.narutohouse.com/megami/megami.html
That site has a lot of good info. If you look around a bit, all your questions will probably be answered. These are just some I noticed.

Oooo, here's another quote. This is from the terminology:
GOA Goddess Operator Academy
An academy to train selected boys to become pilots of the Goddesses.

plus, here http://www.narutohouse.com/megami/profile/hiead_profile.html
is the character page for Zero's rival that you were looking for. Oh, and his number is 87.

ok, that's all for now :D

I was always confused by that show, plus it wasn't anything good, so I just stopped watching it. I'm positive I'm not missing anything. :)
