This question has plagued me since the start. How old is Anakin in EP. 2 and how old is The princess ? I was under the impression that they were 5 years apart. So how exactly do two youngins' of such a huge generation gap hook up ?
I mean it's kinda weird. In the last movie he was 9 ands he was 14... So once again how old are they in the Episode II ?

According to StarWars.com, Anakin is 19 in Episode 2. Which makes Queen Amidala... 24. That's not too bad.

According to the novel he is 20 years old.

He's supposed to be 19 years old like the man said. Luke was 17 in A NEW HOPE.

Okay, I'm gonna rant on this one, so I apologize in advance.
George Lucas is a JERK! I don't care how often he claims that he had the idea for this story early on. He either lied or changed it so that it was unrecognizable, because he screwed it up completely. For starters he made Anakin too young in the first movie, probably because he wanted to use cute little Jake Lloyd (thats the kids name right? doesn't matter, I don't care enough to look it up) to impress all the little children of the world. Why not use someone older? Why not find some 12 or 13 year old to play Anakin? That way at least the age difference wouldn't be so huge. Then I might be able to believe that Amadala would be interested in Anakin, but as it stands, The Amadala/Anakin relationship makes me think that this girl is dating a kid she used to babysit. Maybe its just me, but thats kinda sick.
Whats worse, I saw the trailer a long time ago with some friends and the first thought I had was, "How did Anakin get older than Amadala?". He just looks older to me. She's 24 and he's 19? I don't think so. One of the only things I liked about Clerks: TAS was when Randall got the moron(Lucas) on the stand and made him admit that he lied to the star wars fans and made the movie worse so he could sell a bunch of toys (don't get me started on Jar Jar). Proof of that is in the fact that there was a scary couple of weeks when Lucas actually considered giving n'sync a part in the film. *shudder* That thought still creeps me out.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still gonna go see it and I'm HOPING WITH ALL MY HEART that it will be good. But I still hate George Lucas and I think someone should have kept him away from anything to do with the francaise.
Okay, my rant is done, again, I apologize.

From the Trailer:
Amidala: You've grown, Anakin.
Anakin: So have you.
Me: No she hasn't! She's the exact same age!!!! *fume* Stupid movie...

You do know Star Wars wouldn't exist without Georges Lucas right? Maybe you could show the slightest bit of gratitude here (like not calling him names)...

Originally, Anakin was going to be 12-13. But Lucas made him younger to make losing his mother more painful.
And like Salvor said, Lucas created Star Wars. There may be things we do not agree with but it's HIS story, he can do what he likes.

Bingo, I was just about to say that.
Everyone seems to hate TPM, but doesn't everyone realize all the small things that are going on? I think the problem is that people constantly just want action and stuff blowing up and lightsabers, instead of political action (in the Senate) and finding out who trains Anakin and how all the characters meet.
Well, RogueMartian, if you're still reading this, then let me just tell you that AOTC will be your type of movie. There's a love story there, but there's also a crazy amount of action.

Oh I get it ! Anakin's a smooth talker/ one of those guys that doesn't act his age. Not only the fact that women age better than men. Now I can sorta see how she can fall for him..She most likely finds more in his character than in his age. ANd well Anakin either falls in love or is just a regular 19 year old guy.

A 5 year difference is not a big difference at all. To call Lucas a jerk because of that is ridiculous.

Well, it is a galaxy long ago, and faces obviously change shape (look at Mr Kenobi) - so I think we should just deal with the hand Lucas has dealt. That's part of the magic.
Hopefully this film will bring that magic back where TPM trampled on it a little...
We all love this film, let's keep this cool guys..!

I think some people misunderstood me.
For starters, I care a great deal about the plot and the story. And one of few strengths of episode 1 was the political plots of palpatine. That being said, yes, episode 1 was horrible. I call Lucas a Jerk because the story was beyond bad. There was a great deal of emphasis on an extremely boring pod race, when anakin could have spent some time learning about the force. Or better still there could have been more poltical battles or dealings with the Jedi Council. Almost anything would have been more interesting than that pod race. Jar Jar and all the underwater creatures were extremely annoying. And worse still those annoying cgi characters were put next to the extremely talented Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor. Jar Jar led the army....I won't start a Jar Jar rant, my loathing of that character runs too deep.
And back to the topic of this thread, they made Anakin younger to make the loss of his mother more tragic? I think a 12 year old losing his mother is still pretty sad. I'll bet a 12 year old wouldn't have annoyed me as much Jake Lloyd did. If he was 12 or 13 I would have believed that he was some sort of pilot. It would have fit in a lot better with a bunch of comments obiwan said to luke in episode IV.
George Lucas did seriously screw up the story, and thats my opinion. But if other people liked it, fine, its a free country, thats why I apologized for my rant. I hope that when the series finally does come out on dvd, I can buy 4,5, and 6 seperately, I have no intention of purchasing episode 1 if i can help it. I also hope episode II has a good story, because all the action in the world can't make a bad story good.

At age 9, Anakin is very vulnerable. Things that happen in the early years of life can really scar. Lucas had to balance between a kid who could pilot a podracer and such but also still be a child who has fears like every kid his age. Leaving at such a young age is key to Anakin's fall to the dark side. Anakin is meant to be a prodigy, the 'Chosen One' who was conceived by the Force.
I'm not saying Jake is a great actor, far from it. If you have the TPM DVD, you can see how bad he was. He messed up his screen test and a scene where he says "Coruscant?" got cut because he wasn't happy about how Lucas wanted him to say it. The Deleted Scenes part of the same DVD shows you Anakin's skills in the Podrace. These scenes show Anakin's quick reflexes and piloting skills and cutting them was a very bad idea.
As for Episode II- It looks to be great, the Star Wars galaxy is clearly headed towards the age of the Empire. But think of this- without Episode 1, Episode 2 could never of happened :p

You know that Jar Jar is a Senator in Episode 2 right ? Which means he won't be apart of this adventure...which means odds are he'll most likely only be in 1 or 2 scenes.

Appreciate that. It's a tough thing we face when a story we all have held so close to our hearts is so clearly commercialized for the sake of cold cash. A pity, it's hard - and occasionally I feel like ignoring the new trilogy, special editions etc and just remaining a purist.

Jar Jar isn't a Senator, per se. He's a senior advisor to Senator Amidala, which makes him pretty much the top choice for stand-in. At least he's not Queen. :p
As for Anakin's age... I think 12/13 years old would have been absolutely kept him from being allowed to be a Jedi. Not when he would be closer to the usual age of Knighthood than the usual starting age.

I've had that figure almost a week now.
Jar Jar is one of the senatorial aides for Naboo, representing Gungan interests. The fact that Amidala has no one else to fill in during her leave of absence is both alarming and amusing.... But hey... what can you expect when the freaking Sith Lord is in charge of the Senate?

I saw the SW:ep2 novelization today at Wal-Mart, and according to the jacket summary, ten years have passed since the lovebirds saw each other. Quite a while to be carrying a torch, esp. for a nine- or 10-year old...and we're presuming the princess hasn't had any lovers in the interim, either of noble or low blood (something tells me she's one of those girls who wouldn't mind occassionally slumming it with a page or doorman...or a nerf herder-- ;) ).
