View Full Version : What I'd like to change about Star Trek

If I was to change one thing about Star Trek, I would have made the shows about the crew members of the ship rather than about the officers. I would have developed the show about the ensigns rather than the captains and the commanders. I know they did this for one episode in Lower Decks, showing us briefly what Star Trek could have been had it gone in a different direction.

While I find Star Trek entertaining, I find that the concept of the Captain, First Officer, and the top officers all going down to dangerous planets and on dangerous away missions is unrealistic. The officers in Star Trek should have been background, periphreial characters, and the ensigns and lieutenants would have been the main characters.

I don't know if they are going to have the same formula for the new show, with the officers always in the line of danger, but I would like it if they actually ventured out in Enterprise and broke that mold for a more realistic direction.

Yeah, true. But have you seen the latest ads for Enterprise? Realistic is definitely the word I'd use to describe the footage I saw. If you haven't seen the commercial, go to trekweb.com

They've got links there to the ad. It truly looks great. I'd never have known it was Star Trek if I hadn't known about Enterprise already. The show definitely looks like its going to have a different feel. (Just seeing Capt Archer wearing a baseball cap made my day!!!)

I haven't seen that commercial yet, and doubt I will (I don't have a speedy modem to make watchin this stuff on line worth while and I am NOT watching UPN to see it, tho I might catch a re run of Voyager to check it out). But I have seen teaser pictures and read up on it, and I really think the direction this show is taking will make it the most unique Trek series since DS9.

Yeah, the direction is what I feel is going to be most important. And second, the writing. If both hold up, and they both have to, Enterprise should rock. It really seems like they're getting a lot of the little details right. No shields, only hull plating. A universal translator that isn't dependable. Tranporters only for cargo. No photon torpedoes. NASA-like uniforms. Little things like that are going to give Enterprise a very different look and feel.

Who are the creative forces behind the new series?

Never really liked anything Star Trek besides the shows/movies with Captain Kirk, this new series looks good though.

Sweet! DS9 rocked hard with them at the helm!

But then Berman and Braga were the guys running Voyager and it sucked. As far as DS9, I think it was just Berman that was involved, so maybe Braga was responsible for Voyager's troubles. But then Braga co-wrote STFC, and that rocked. Of course, Ron Moore (DS9) was the other writer. I really don't know. I heard several of Voyager's writers will be writing for Enterprise and that scares me. I'm not sure what to expect. Arguments could be made either way, so...
