View Full Version : The Justice League Designs - Insane Proportions?

Now, I really adored Bruce Timm's character designs for Batman: The Animated Series, however, with each series that followed, the designs have become more and more stylized and less and less realistic. Take TNBA for example. I can't think of a single female portrayed on the series that didn't have a larger head and thinner frame than she did on B:TAS. As for the men, if you compare B:TAS Batman to JL Batman, a noticable difference emmerges. While Batman used to look pumped up, his body is so large now that his head appears to be too small! Take a gander at Wonder Woman: She has long, slender legs and a condensed upper-torso. I know she's supposed to be beautiful, but don't her stilt-legs make her look a little awkward when she walks?
So what do you guys think, are the designs less realistic? Do you find them less enjoyable? Do the characters look too "super"? Let's discuss

It does kind of look odd, but I don't think it takes away from the show any. :)

Speaking of odd proportions, Green Lantern has huge shoulders and a tiny little girly waist. He's top heavy!
Yeah, I've definitely noticed it. Its one of the things that took away from my enjoyment of The New Batman Adventures. But it doesn't really bother me in JL.

Well I think the more buffed up bodies is suppouse to represent the more "fantastic" feel of the show. It's more like a traditional acttion/adventure show when compared to Batman TAS (kinda film noir) or Batman Beyond which is more "cyberpunkish." I say it looks most like Supes personally.

I've always thought Batman and Superman's shoulders were way too broad. They do make their heads look smaller than they should be. I also don't think Wonder Woman's legs and torso match either somehow. Hawkgirl's always nicely done though. Her and Flash I'm not bothered by because they aren't drawn with extreme proportions like the others.

Maybe I'm just weird (okay, I am), but I like the character designs for The New Batman/Superman Adventures and Justice League. They are simplistic, stylized, and easily captured/copied by other artists. What bothers me, and I may be one of the few to have noticed it, is how it is not consistant! At least not with Wonder Woman. Watch "Paradise Lost" pts 1 and 2. Look how different Diana is drawn within each episode...and then how different she looks between pt 1 and 2. It would be nice if the animators could be a little more uniform in their portrayal of Diana (I haven't really noticed this with the other characters).

The TNBA proportions bug me much more then JL's. They drew the feet so small in some episodes, ugh!

I was going to say the same darn thing!
I don't really mind the JL style all that much. I do have to say that the biggest thing is that it is very inconsistent (I think I said this about TNBA too ;)). Like Kedrick was saying, Diana seems to be the most major of these. But I've noticed it with other characters too. Some of the characters just aren't drawn "right" sometimes.

The art in the new animated episodes aren't as good, but I still like the show.

Superman's face still bugs me the most. I still can't believe that Bruce Timm would allow himself to be talked into turning Kal-El's mug into such a piece of garbage.

I find myself disappointed with several aspects of the animation. While the special effects (wing, water, fire, etc) look great, the colors just aren't as vibrant as they would have been if cell animation had been used. Since it's cheaper to use computers, I guess I can't really blame them, though. The proportions on Wonder Woman are constantly off, which is what really drives me nuts, next to seeing Superman and Batman have bodies that aren't proportional to their heads. I think the art was stronger when realism was a higher priority than design.

I still am a big fan of hand to paper.
I like Computer animation but in something like a movie I want to have animation done by hand.
Coloring and moving just look better when you have a great animator drawing by hand.
And proporsions are the same when one person is in control of one character all of the time.
IMHO

well that's true. I don't like hoe the girls bodys are. To be honest as much as I am thin in rl and carry a toned slender body, seeing their body makes me feel fat. Cause they look like a bunch of Barbies. This is why animation sometimes has a down side. Shows these types of things and causes bad messages...
