Here is the latest update on the Speedy saga..Tomorrow night Channel 9 news at 10 will air the Cartoon Network/Speedy Gonzales controversy during it's telecast.I got the official word from the anchorwoman(Mrs. Cnythia Guaba) that interviewed me last week as she called me this morning to let me know that it's will be airing tommorrow night. How much will be editied with my interview, I have no idea, but it should be a good one I hope!

Mrs. Guaba told me also today, that she spoke with Laurie Goldberg and she told me that there is a chance that Speedy might return to CN's rotation and how nice she(Goldberg)was to her which is a positive good sign.As for the cartoons that will be shown in a clip format that I provided for the story are a few of the Daffy/Speedy shorts and other racial cartoons that she wanted to also cover for the story. At press time, there is no word if any of the other cartoons will be shown during the story, as of the last minute, I pulled two of the shorts that was supposed to air on the story and several members know my decision on yanking them and it was not easy doing it.

Here are the cartoons I submitted for the news story.
SWING WEDDING -Happy Harmonies (1936) MGM
PRESTO CHANGO -Aesop's Fables(1929) PATHE FILM EXCHANGE
THE LAST ROUND UP -Gandy Goose & Sourpuss (1943) TERRYTOONS/20thCENTURY FOX
LITTLE BLACK SAMBO-Comicolor/Ub Iwerks (1935)CELEBRITY PICTURES
THE DUCKTATORS -Looney Tunes (1942)WARNER BROS.

I hope that ch 9. will air these shorts in their proper historical context which I even to mentioned to her last week, so I just hope that this interview will be good and positive for all cartoon fans all over...
Thanks for all the great support gang! :)

Well, if Laurie worded it that way, I'm still optimistic. "Return to the rotation" is a nice phrase! I like the way that rolls out...reeeturn to the roootatiiioooon....! She told me she would let me know what they decided, but said she didn't want me to send anymore messages about the subject...so hate that as I do, I won't push it. I'll ask if it gets any longer, though.

Just for the sake of curiosity, what were the two cartoons you pulled, Nelson?

The two shorts that Channel 9 wanted to air for the story was two Bugs Bunny cartoons, "ALL THIS AND RABBIT STEW" and "BUGS BUNNY NIPS THE NIPS".I made my decision to not air those shorts for fearing that another June Bugs controversy could happen all over again. Some very close friends of mine that who are in the business , said I could air them if I wanted to but I choosed not to.

Yeah, Nelson, that was wise. You wouldn't want to get sued by racial rights groups for providing the network with those cartoons...

Though it would've been great to see Bugs Bunny say "Here's some scrap iron for Japan, Motto!" on the news... :p

I just saw the interview. Honestly, I do not know the shorts they aired, but they showed several clips. They only showed about thirty seconds to a minute of your interview, IIRC. Bummer.

I recorded and saw the interview just now. The whole story mostly contained clips from Speedy-Daffy cartoons and there were kids that got more air time than you, Nelson! I bet these kids don't know squat about the history of Speedy. If I had the chance to be interviewed. :( Oh, well. They didn't even show clips from the other cartoons that Nelson provided, like "Little Black Sambo" or "The Ducktators." I think the story could of been done better. Anyway, thanks for doing the interview for us, Nelson, even though you received 15 seconds of airtime.

Channel 9 have been known to archive clips on their site...that's the only way I was able to find out about an incident at a construction site in Jersey City a few weeks ago (the oversized crane being used at this bldg. in the Newport area was in danger of collapsing onto nearby houses/major street/the one PATH line into NY after 9-11)

Give them until noon tomorrow (26), then look for it at www.upn9.tv...

Hey it is there now... http://www.upn9.tv/content/story.asp?id=261&content_id=1125134 ... luckly all of the kids that talk are on the right side...

Well, here's what I think. The kids and parents who actually watched the cartoons didn't mind them at all. The "experts" who have probably never seen a cartoon in their lives, and anything with an accent scares them, are against it. And what's the deal with calling Speedy a drunk, womanizer, and a thief? Anything's possible when you show the cartoon out of context!

The Jury will please disregard that last statment.
