I would like to know just who is your favorite Terrytoons character of all time...and why!!!

Believe it or else, but mine was a tough descison between Heckle & Jeckle and Gandy Goose & Sourpuss.
But I picked the talking magpies...Heckle & Jeckle

Simply they are the best!!!

For those of us'uns who have set through a LOT of Terrytoons the list of choices will be much narrower than your poll. (As a wee bairn I loved stuff like Hector Heathcoate and Deputy Dawg). The REAL list for folks like me would be amongst Heckle & Jeckle, Mighty Mouse, and Gandy Goose & Sourpuss. For SHEER PERSONALITY, not to mention gags and design, the smart-alecky Magpies win hands down (okay... wings down ;)). Your poll had one crucial omission... Kiko The Kangaroo, the character Joe Barbera and other future MGM'ers labored on! Plus it was the first directing gig for MGM Director Geoge Gordon. So even though Joe bashes Kiko, the bouncy marsupial is of some importance.

There had to be something left out because of the 10 choice limit. I have never seen even one Terrytoon cartoon, so I can't vote on this poll.

I voted Gandy Goose & Sourpuss as my favorites. Their cartoons are very funny and their wartime cartoons are probably the best Terrytoons made during WWII!

The Gandy Goose cartoons, with or without Sourpuss, were some of the better ones they did in New Rochelle, but by the end of the series it was repaetitive beyond belief, even to the point that the characters couldn't save it.

Heckle and Jeckle managed to avoid that problem, and the Connie Rasinski directed/Jim Tyer animated cartoons managed to take Paul Terry's cheaply-made animation and use it to the cartoons' advantages, with Tyer's mangle-the-characters animation combining with Rasinski's goofy-looking facial poses to produce something that worked.

After those two character pairings, I'd probably go with the early Deputy Dawg and the early Sidney the Elephant cartoons as the most enjoyable ones Terrytoons made, because the characters worked in aggressive comedy situations, something the other Terry stars had problems with (and how could you follow up Deputy Dawg with Luno the Flying Horse? Man, was that awful!)

Oh my gosh John!! You're right I forgot Sidney... One of my favorite all-time pachyderms (Shep had to be excepted since he's a "doggie").

As for me, like you I'd nominate Luno as the WORST of Terry...

Oh, yeah, I just noticed that you forgot Gene Deitch's Tom Terrific.

What really surprises me a lot on this topic, is that no one has picked "Mighty Mouse", considering he was Paul Terry's biggest creation in the studio's 32 year history of making cartoons.

Heckle & Jeckle get my vote!! I have six videos of their cartoons and, like many WB & MGM cartoons, they are worthy of repeat viewings! Who would vote for Mighty Mouse? He was bland and didn't even show up in his own cartoons until the last two minutes!!

I remember WTBS used to show the Heckle & Jeckle shorts back in the early '80's. I wonder what happened...

Nelson~

I'm surprised too at Mighty Mouse's non-showing in the poll. He's another character who's terrific when you're a small child but who gets decidedly less so as time goes on.

A quasi-parody of a serious character (Superman) I guess is just hard to pick as an all time favorite of a studio...

I haven't seen most Terrytoons, but between Heckel and Jeckel, Mighty Mouse, and Deputy Dawg ..... hands down the Deputy!! It's Possible! It's Possible!

Heckle and Jeckle. To me, there were the only appealing and funny characters Terry had. (And I like the Jim Tyer animation!) After that I would pick Sick, Sick Sidney.
