Well, I know DG usually starts these threads but since the boards were down, I didn't know if he was going to get to it, so here I go.

Yes, Legally Blonde is the number 1 movie. Good friggin God what happened there??? I didn't see this coming and neither did DG. He and I both thought that The Score would take #1 and then Final Fantasy which got 4th place!!?? I saw this and really loved it. I thought that animation was mind blowing and the story was pretty good too. Cats and Dogs hold it at third and Scary Movie stays at 5. The sleeper hit The Fast and The Furious continues to do well even after passing the century mark. It looks like A.I and Tomb Raider will be out of the top ten by next weekend. I didn't get a chance to see The Score, but did anyone else did?

1) Legally Blonde (MGM) NEW!!!
$20,400,000 ($20,400,000 through 1 week)

2) The Score (Paramount) NEW!!!
$19,000,000 ($19,000,000 through 1 week)

3) Cats and Dogs (Warner Bros.)
$12,000,000 ($58,900,000 through 2 weeks)

4) Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (Sony/Columbia TriStar) NEW!!
$11,500,000 ($19,100,000 through 1 week)

5) Scary Movie 2 (Dimension)
$9,500,000 ($52,900,000 through 2 weeks)

6) The Fast and the Furious (Universal)
$7,800,000 ($115,400,000 through 4 weeks)

7) Dr. Dolittle 2 (Fox)
$7,000,000 ($84,300,000 through 4 weeks)

8) Kiss the Dragon (Fox)
$5,800,000 ($23,900,000 through 2 weeks)

9) A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (Warner Bros.)
$5,100,000 ($70,000,000 through 3 weeks)

10) Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (Paramount)
$4,000,000 ($122,600,000 through 5 weeks)

Now, the movie I have waited all summer for opens this Wednesday, Jurassic Park 3. I CAN'T WAIT! My girlfriend, her dad and I will be there opening night.

Now The Lost World holds the ALL TIME box office record for an opening weekend. Friday through Sunday TLW pulled in a record breaking $72.1 million dollars. Combine that with it's Wednesday/Thursday opening days too and it comes to $90,161,880!!! Keep it in mind that it was Memorial Day weekend that it opened, but still. Now JP3 opens on a Wednesday too, does anyone think JP3 will break the record or even come close? I think it will come close but not break it. Why? Because Jurassic Park was such a hit at the box office and critically it was succesful. TLW wasn't all that great critically and a lot of fans left feeling with a bad taste in their mouths. Those people who saw TLW might not have the anticipation or excitedness (real word?) that they did for TLW. While so far JP3 is doing well critically, we'll see what happens when the "big gun" critics see it. But again, I think JP3 will come close, much like The Mummy Returns did, but probably won't break it.

The Clown Prince (The Movie Guy) :) (I know some people think that's stupid, but oh well.)

Also, THE MUMMY RETURNS hit the $200 mill mark this weekend, bringing it's totaly to 200.1 mill. I was totally thrown for a loop by this weekend's top ten. Even Sony predicted a big opening. I think everyone was really suprised. I thought BLONDE would get a cool $15 mill, but it grossed more than I thought. Still, this means we'll see more Reese Witherspoon...

I plan to see JP3 tomorrow night as well. I'm going in with a bunch of friends. Then I may go in Thursday and see it with my sister. I'm totally pumped for this. I've watched about every news thing on it, and I'm watching JURASSIC PARK and THE LOST WORLD (which I like) in preparation.

And it sucks to see A.I. doing so badly.

I'm with you, the box office results were odd odd odd. Somehow Final Fantasy managed to do worse than I thought it would, and I was the main nay-sayer around here. (I'm finally going to see it on Friday, and I'll probably dig it.) No one could have guessed that Legally Blonde would have done so well... I'd rather not see more of Reese Witherspoon, since apparently she's a jerk and a half (at least according to genial old Kevin Smith, check out his Psycomic columns archived on viewaskew.com for more info).

I've got a feeling JP3 will do pretty well, though probably not as well as the previous flicks. It'll probably get mediocre reviews, but I'll see it anyway... love me some dinos!

Don't forget that SHREK has now passed Toy Story 2 as thew second highest animated grosser of all-time.

It's a cute chick movie...like "She's All That" or "10 Things I Hate About You" or anything with Sandra Bullock.

As for Jurassic Park 3...call me cynical but I'm inclined to think it's a sequel that probably didn't need making .Except maybe Star Wars, The Godfather, and one or two others, when the devil has a sequel been bettter than the original? The Nutty Professor--great movie! The sequel--lackluster and silly, mostly a vehicle for slick camera tricks. Dr. Dolittle--not as good as N.P., but some great voicework on the animals, who stole the show from an oddly subdued Murphy. Sequel--I haven't seen it but my hopes aren't high. The Exorcist--unmitigated horror classic and greatest date movie ever made. Part 2--confusing, hard-to-follow plot that revolced around bugs...and the last one was sorely disappointing, not even including Linda Blair but instead starring a possessed Father Damien and set in a nut barn. WTF?
You see my point.

JP3 isn't necessary, but it'll still be fun. I already know what happens, becuase I rtead the picture book novelization this past weekend, sorta by accident. Still, I just wanna see them dinos tear into people. And with th emovie at a cool 94 minutes, it'll be a quick fix. While I wish it was at least 100 - 110 mins, I suppose this'll just do. I predict a $50 mill five day weekend.

Ugh, I can't believe this! I thought for sure Final Fantasy would be top dog...it made half its cash on opening day and then fizzled?! And I really didn't see Legally Blonde doing so well but I guess people listened to the critics. I could also do without more Reese Witherspoon, never liked her...

It just goes to show that "serious" animation just isn't as marketable to today's audiences. Yes, it was a flawed movie, but that hasn't stopped past flawed movies from earning millions of dollars. Simply put: people just didn't have enough interest in FF to go see it.

it looks like an abnormally stupid chick flick.

LEGALLY BLONDE is the 2nd best reviewed movie of the summer, after SHREK. Then again, with such mediocre movies so far this year, that really isn't saying much. I don't think I'll plunk down money to see thi sunless my girl;friends paying. But I ma plunking down change tomorrow night to see JP3! Woo-Hoo!

I know!! Me and a friend of mine are going to see JP3 tomorrow!! Whether it is as good as the first two or not it will still be entertaining, which is all I really care about.:)

Legally Blonde's director was his first directorial debut. So for him it was quite a debut. Good reviews and a number 1 spot. Not bad. My gf saw it and thought it was good, but that one will be a DVD rental movie for me.

I said it when Cats and Dogs was tops, and now I'll say it again:

It's a sad, sad state this country is in.

I definatly wanna see it opening night becuase it'll be fun. The threatre will go all out, making standees and setting up displays. Plus it'll be on the biggest screen in the multiplex. It'll be packed with eager fans. It'll just rock. I predict a $180 mill gross.

Man, this board is gonna be PACKED tomorrow with JP3 reviews and comments. I plan to post one up when I get back from the movie. I can't wait to see what everyone thinks. From what I've heard so far, it's a great straight forward action/adventure more that even Tea Leoni can't ruin!

Legally Blonde=chick flick??? I always thought of a chick flick as a movie with Mel Gibson in it (aside from braveheart and patriot) or something like that. LIke What Women Want. I never thought of 10 Things I Hate About You as a chick flick. I just know Julia Styles is awesome in it. And if Legally Blonde is in the same league as that movie, I just may have to check it out!

I actually loved 10 things I hate about you. It's practically the only teen movie I liked.

How about Drive Me Crazy. Kinda lame, but one thing that drove that movie home for me was that video montage that student showed in the gym, with the Hitler references. Funny, great stuff. That montage was worth watching the movie alone.

Nah. Haven't seen it. American Pie was also enjoyable for me.

What do you think about American Pie 2? I don't think it will be that good, personally.

I also enjoyed Road Trip.

Man, I searched the site and couldn't find it. I did however see that Kevin Smith named his daughter Harley Quinn Smith. Pretty funny!

I don't like Reese Witherspoon (I always think about peanut butter with a spoon when I say that name..)...but..good for her that the movie she was in did well!

I saw a preview for American Pie 2 while watching JP3 yesterday..funny looking..

U guys seen the preview for "The Others" ? Holy crap, that's the scariest thing I've ever seen...and it was "Approved for All Audiences"!!! The whole theater was jumping throughout the trailer..

I have mixed feelings about Pie 2. BUt from what I saw though (a preview in Fast And the Furious), it might be good. I'll give it a shot for sure though.

Croc:

The Reese mention is deep in the Psycomics columns under "Kevin Speaks," but it's really not worth the effort to find it. Suffice to say that some time after interviewing her for a part, she publically said a bunch of not nice things about him for no apparent reason. This caused Kevin to seriously consider, and almost did, toilet-papering her house. Really.

And yeah, you can't get much more fanboy than naming your daughter Harley Quinn! :)

I don't know what kind of person she is off screen, but I have three favorite movies that have Reece Witherspoon in them, Cruel Intentions, Plesantville, and Election (my favorite of all three, perhaps one of my favorite comedies of all time).

Well...I did like "Ten Things", don't get me wrong. Something about seeing a dame who's a total ice princess warm up to the bad boy with the heart of gold instills this cynical old demon with hope for my romantic future. But most movies with feminine mushy cutesey weepy themes tend to put me to sleep after the first hour. On L.B.--I'm waiting for some critic to scream the words "Clueless ripoff!"
American Pie 2? I have a feeling it'll be another sequel that didn't need making...add City Slicker 2 to my earlier ranting list.
I always thought "Reese" was a boy's name--but there are guys named "Leslie"--so...there you go.
