Interesting. Shamus' memories of the 1960s and of Paramount studios in his autobiography are spotty, at best. I understand he was freelancing for Kneitel (and Hal Seeger and John Hubley) in the early 60s, so I wonder if he worked on The New Casper Cartoon Show for Seymour in 1963-64? The drawing sure looks like a variation on the opening/closing dance hall scene, though Casper seems to be too interested in Wendy to notice the two kids are getting scared out of their wits by Spooky (thoughs of wiccan sex will do that to an adolecent).

Unfortunately, as a naive first grader I failed to either bring a camera or take copious notes when we went on a class trip to the studios from P.S. 40, so I have no memory at all of who the heck we saw there, except we saw a ton of Casper stuff. Live and learn...

Shamus Culhane certainly did work on The New Casper Cartoon Show. He has animation credits on six cartoons there. The other animators included present and former Paramount staffers like Nick Tafuri, Tom Golden, Gordon Whittier, Graham Place, Martin Taras and Chuck Harriton.

Of course, this was during his 60's freelancing phase. Culhane did not work on Paramount's other TV projects of the time (the Popeyes and the Comic Kings) or any of their theatrical series. Culhane didn't go back on staff, in fact, until Howard Post's ouster from the director's chair (well after Kneitel had died).

You mentioned Hal Seeger. Shamus worked on "Out Of The Inkwell" and "The Milton The Monster Show" for Hal. By the time "Batfink" rolled around, Culhane was too busy running the Paramount Cartoon Studios to participate.

Culhane talks about his work with Seeger and Hubley in his bio, but passes over any mention of freelancing for Kneitel on the Casper series (BTW -- the Facets animation catalouge does have Culhane's name listed as one of the KFS directors on the Beetle Bailey/Snuffy Smith cartoons. AFAIK, only Kneitel and Gerold Ray had directing credits on those (Kneitel and Deitch on the Krazy Kats), so either Shamus did do some freelancing for Paramount before the New Casper Cartoon Show came out, or the listing is a mistake).

One ofthe most interesting chapters in Culhane's autobiography is the one on Famous Studios. It sounds like his work at Famous would appeal to fans who hate Famous' pre-l966 cartoons. Culhane certainly didn't care for those pre-1966 cartoons. I've liked the stills and storyboard drawings that I've seen from Culhane's Famous work. And the plots to these latter day cartoons sound way more interesting than the dull stuff Seymour Kneitel was directing during the early l960s. Are any of Culhane's and Ralph Bakshi's Famous work on video or DVD?
