Does anybody remember the old Pink Panther Show TV theme from the early 70s? It went like this:

Think of all the animals you've ever heard about
Like rhinoceroses and tigers, cats and mink
There are lots of funny animals in all this world
But have you ever seen a panther that is pink?
Think!
A panther that is positively pink?
Well here he is, Pink Panther, the Pink Panther
Everybody loves a panther that's pink
He really is a groovy cat
He's a gentleman, he's a scholar, he's an acrobat
He's in the pink, the Pink Panther, the rinky-dink Panther
And it's as plain as your nose
That he's the one and only, truly original, panther pink from head to toe!
Yes, he's the one and only, truly original, panther, Pink Panther from head to toe!

Anybody remember that?

Not offhand, but by any chance was the tune the Henry Mancini one from the live-action films?

No. It was a more upbeat theme.

The only part I remembered was "Rinky-dink panther"...ugh....

Since this is lyric night, here's one for you -

When you're on a highway and Road Runner goes Beep-Beep.
Just step aside or you might feel a bit of heat.
Road Runner, Road Runner runs on the road all day.
Even the Coyote can't make him change his ways.

Road Runner - the Coyote's after you.
Road Runner - if he catches you you're through.

That Coyote is really a crazy clown.
When will he learn that he never can mow him down?
Poor little Road Runner never bothers anyone.
Just running down the road's his idea of having fun.

Doo doo-doo - doo doot doot doot da-doo.
Doo doo-doo - doo da-doot doot doot da-doo!

And just think - somebody got paid for that!

I thought the theme to the "Pink Panther" show went Du-duh, du-duh, Duh-duh, Duh-duh. You know? It's hard to hum it by typing, but didn't it have that kind of mysterious like theme?

WOW! What a memory rush. It's been many years since I've heard that one! Thanks!

This theme tune is still played when England broadcasts the Pink Panther show.

Yeah. More Brits know about it than Americans.

A couple of the Pink Panther cartoons that TNT and CN used to show that still contained laugh tracks had the music from the original TV show theme, which was one of four themes for the Pink Panther Show while on its Saturday morning NBC-ABC runs.

The other two on NBC were the "New Pink Panther Show" theme and the "Think Pink" theme. When the show moved to ABC in 1978, the music was a slight variation on the jazzed up/disco version of the Mancini theme used in the final Peter Sellers Pink Panther movie.

Who could ever forget the beat? I still rank it as one of the best tunes I've ever heard...and it always plays in my mind when I feel suave. ^^;;

I never heard of the lyrics, though...and it doesn't seem to match the beat Daffyfan2002 mentioned. Perhaps these were parts of different Pink Panther series?

I think the theme Daffyfan is thinking of is the one the one used at the start of all the cartoons (like how all LTs and MMs have theme music), the song chuckamuck mentioned was the theme song to the whole show (like "This Is It!" would be).

Then again, it's been a long time since I've seen the Pink Panther cartoons. I think they all began with the "da da da da, duh da..." theme, with the panther smoking a cigarette.

I remember some of it, but not a whole lot.

Now that does sound like the Mancini theme from the live-action films. From reading this thread, it sounds like that was the theme for the cartoons themselves, with something else used for the TV show.

Jack is correct. For the actual Pink Panther cartoons the screen would be filled by a pink diamond, then the Panther appears smoking a cigarette. The music was the Mancini music.

And there was also the theme song from the "Think Pink Panther Show" of the Seventies...

Does anyone else besides me REALLY like the music in the Ant and the Aardvark cartoons? The music's really catchy, not to mention the shorts being hilarious as well... :D

BTW, you can tell I really like the cartoons by my new avatar... ;)

Of course Thad... I love the A & A music... It's only the most infectious in any of the DePatie-Freleng cartoons.

I'm not sure but, the lyrics you wrote for the Road runner show seem incorrect.

Just step aside or you might feel a bit of heat.
I thought the line was, "Just step aside or you mightg end up in a heap."

And...

That Coyote is really a crazy clown.
The line is, "That coyote is really a great big clown."

And...

When will he learn that he never can mow him down?

When will he learn that he never can SLOW him down?

Well, that's because Doug Goodwin put something of an all star band together for the sessions. The musicians were Tommy Tedesco (banjo), Shelly Manne (drums), Ray Brown (bass), Pete Candoli (trumpet), Billy Byers (trombone) and Jimmy Rowles (piano). All were credited for each Ant and Aardvark outing, and also for the first Roland and Rattfink cartoon which used similar music.

Who were these guys? Shelly Manne helped define West Coast Jazz, Billy Byers was also a top arranger for Count Basie, Tommy Tedesco was the ultimate session guitarist, Pete Candoli and his late brother Conte were both trumpeters for Stan Kenton, Jimmy Rowles did a bunch of interviews for the Ken Burns Jazz docu, and Ray Brown - what can I say about a career that has spanned over 55 years and is still going strong? And they all came together to do cartoon music one day in 1968. Wonderful.

As the old man said, "That ain't the way I heared it..."

I don't have the lyric sheet, but I've been singing it that way since I first watched it as a kid so I gotta respectfully disagree. But hey, your lyrics make sense too.

Oh well at least I got the doo's right! ;)

OK, I have just finished burning my own CD of 1960s cartoon themes, several of which, including the "Road Runner" one, I had to re-record once, twice or even more times on CD-RW to get it right. Based on repeated re-listening, I can safely say that the lines in question are:

When you're on a highway and Road Runner goes "beep beep";
Just step aside or you might end up in a heap;

and
That coyote is really a crazy clown;
When will he learn that he never can mow him down?

Also, as a side note, Doug Goodwin and his band did score one Pink Panther cartoon, which involved the Panthers battling a caveman and a small dinosaur over a bone. I think it was "Prehistoric Pink," but there were two Panther cartoons with Stone Age themes, so I'm not positive on the title.

It was "Extinct Pink".

Used to have that cartoon on tape, but I don't anymore.
"Darn it! Darn the luck!"

Thanks. I thought "Prehistoric Pink" might be the wrong title, but I just couldn't remember the other one.

Little late to this thread but its been a busy weekend.

Here's a link to the theme mentioned in the first post of this thread so people can listen for themselves.

http://home.earthlink.net/~gcollins03/toonzone/PinkPanther Show music intro.mp3

-Its a 1.1MB MP3 file. When I click on it to "save as", my IE5.5 wants to save it as a MPEG file but it isn't a video. Don't know why that is but you can just rename it as an MP3 and it should play fine.

If anyone is looking to trade for Pink Panther shorts, I have most but not all of them.

FWIW, there is a realaudio clip of this theme at Jon's Looney Tunes RealAudio Showcase page. (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/7864/ltsounds.html)

It's the third TV theme - called "The Road Runner Show - end credits music".

Well, up until last night anyway. Ray Brown was found dead in his hotel room in Indianapolis last night.
