View Full Version : Fresh Question #13: Recommend A Movie

Nightwing

Hey folks, it's new FQ time so put on your thinking caps. Yes I know you haven't heard OR done that since the third grade but shut up and do it anyway! Ahem....pardon me.

What is the one movie you would recommend to a friend to see because you were shocked to hear they hadn't heard of it??

Ok, so I have to put a thinking cap on? Um, sorry, just did my hair, hon, not gonna happen!

Anyway, onto the question. I would have to say Star Wars -- and I mean any of them, since once you see one, you really have to see the rest. And I can't believe there are people out there that have not seen these movies. There is and was so much hype about them, that it just astounds me when I meet people that haven't watched even one of the movies.

They are, though, allowed to dislike them, after seeing them. While, I personally love the trilogy, I can accept other people's opinions.

Weirdly, enough, this happened to me over the weekend. So, needless to say, I can now tell everyone, I have seen The Skulls -- I thought it was pretty good, btw.

Ok, enough of my rambling on. (Now it's time for everyone else to ramble on!)

I really liked the movie Frequency. I don't think it did very well at the box-office, but it's still good. Another is The Abyss from James Cameron. I love the alien scenes.

Would you believe that ONE person in my Geo Sci class never saw Jurassic Park? The room had 120+ students and was dead silent save for my "Oh my God"

I need to second Princess Bride, Fallen, The Big Lebowski, and of course, Star Wars.

I'd have to recommend The Matrix, Blade (somewhat disappointed w/ II), Space Balls, Young Frankenstien, and of course Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. I know some of these don't sound like something you'd be shocked to hear someone say they didn't see, but if you're the kind of person I'd even begin to converse with, I would be shocked if they hadn't seen Young Frankenstien.

I just love "Truman Show"...to me, it's the defining film...

A good mindless fun movie would be "Super Mario Bros." If you haven't seen it, do so. Pop a big bowl of popcorn, invite friends, and prepare to laugh yourselves silly. It may be dumb, but it's all in good fun, and I think that's all they were going for. The acting is surprisingly good, especially from John Leguizamo (who was then unknown) and Fiona Shaw (still unknown, Petunia Dursley in the HP movies, though), and look for sight gags and game references...

Actually the Princess Bride is just one big quote. Allow me to add to the list a bit....

Vezzini: "He didn't fall?!?!??!?! Inconthevable! (sic)"
Inigo: "You keep using that word! I do not think it means what you think it means...."

Vezzini tells Fezzik to kill Westley, "His way"
Fezzik: Oh good! MY way! Thank you, Vezzini!....Which way's my way?
Vezzini: Pick up a rock, get behind the boulder, in a minute the man in black will come rushing around the corner. The minute his head is in view, HIT IT WITH THE ROCK!
Fezzik: My way isn't very sportsmanlike....

Miracle Max: Have fun storming the castle!
Valerie: Think it'll work?
Miracle Max: It would take a miracle.

And the one that I tell everyone to look out for....

Fezzik: "Anybody want a peanut?"

There are a lot of great movies it wouldn't "shock" me to learn that no one has ever heard of: "Miller's Crossing," "Local Hero," "What's Up Doc?" "Dr. Strangelove," "Rio Bravo," "The Big Sleep," "Bringing Up Baby," etc.

I guess "Casablanca" is one that I would be startled to find that no one had heard of, and would fervently recommend.

I know what you mean LuckyBob. It was really hard to limit myself so the post wouldn't be too long. I think almost any of Mel Brook's films are just one big quote.

Another good one would be Four Rooms. It's an indy film, but has stars such as Madonna, Antonio Banderas, Bruce Willis, and stars Tim Roth (Mr. Orange from Resevoir Dogs, another good moving, that has Steve Buschemi from Lebowski and lots of other movies).

Full Metal Jacket is another great recomendation, as well as Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail (prbly my all time fav movie).

Whoops, forgot all about The Godfather. Thanks TNN for airing that last night (and unedited too, wow-wee).

Speaking of which, why doesn't anyone ever show part 3? Anytime some channel shows 3 mafia moives, they show GF I, II, and then some other obscure movie, but rarely have a night of all Godfather. I heard 3 really sucked, but have only seen bits and pieces to it ONCE, so how am I supposed to judge it myself?

You're gonna have to rent 3 if you want to see it, they will NEVER air it I'm sure.

I suppose it was alright for what it was, but it PALES in comparison to the first two, to the point where it's not even funny. Guess it just wasn't my cup of tea.

I agree with The Big Lebowski, tho I have to admit the first time I saw it was the Sunday after this past Thanksgiving. But I snatched up a copy of the DVD but quick and have seen it plenty of times to make up for the lack of seeing it.

I'm one of those people who hasn't seen the original Star Wars trilogy. I've seen the beginning of A New Hope, then fell asleep, and haven't had the strength to see it again - mainly because the next day my friend dragged me to see Episode One in the theaters, and I thought it was awful.

When I first came to college almost 2 years ago, I was shocked to find out how many people had not seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off. If you ask me, this was a classic, and everybody should see it at least once while still in high school. Classic John Hughes, and just classic 80s flick.

I don't think I understand. It has to be a wellknown movie that someone has told me they've never heard of? There aren't many movies that I would be surprised someone hasn't seen.

*Glory. My brother got a DVD player and rented this movie one night. We soon discovered the slowmo and zoom features and spent quite a while watching this guy's head get blown apart in frame by frame. I'm a bit of a Civil War buff, so I enjoyed it. Also, I didn't realize the used the f word so much back then....

*They Always Come Back 2. Sequel to a movie based on a Stephen King novella; stars quintessential eighties TV dad Michael Gross...but he performs an act of sacrifice near the end of the picture that good ol' whitebread Stephen Keaton would never DREAM of doing...brrrrrr.

*Chicken Run. Directed by Nick "Wallace and Gromit" Park, and deals with the indomnitability of the human--er--chicken spirit. Listen to the voices of the rats, who sound like they might have walked in from a Python soundstage.

*Clerks. It's a movie about nothing, done in black-and-white, and intentionally looks cheap and shot/edited mostly in two days in someone's mom's basement...and it's brilliant. My favorite bit--the "snowball" exchange. "In a row?"

The Princess Bride is a great movie for those who have never seen it. I love watching it over and over...except for the giant rat scene...*shudder*....I'm tramautized by that scene even though they are so fake looking...they scared the you know what outta me when I was little. But...have any of you ever read the book? Somewhat similar to the movie...till you get to the end. And the movie end is not the book end. The book continues beyond what you see ending in the movie, and boy does it get depressing....
The Last Castle, starring Robert Redford, is a pretty good one to see as well. It's just an all around good movie, especially if you like Redford, like me!
And, Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail. Seriously, if you haven't seen this, you're missing out. I had to go rent it right away in my freshman year when I noticed that my boyfriend (no longer) and his buddies kept quoting this one movie. It's just so darn funny.

Kingpin - the most amusing of the Dumb & Dumber genre. Fantastically funny and totally in bad taste - did I mention Bill Murray was in it?

Back To The Future - Nuff said...

Starship Troopers - There are levels there to this one - you have to look for them.

Dark City - One of the most unique Sci-Fi movies in the last few years. A must - seriously! Jennifer Connerly's new found status should dig this one up once more...!

Allen's Nickname.

Dr. Strangelove: My favroite movie.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Colonel... that Coca-Cola machine. I want you to shoot the lock off it. There may be some change in there.
Colonel "Bat" Guano: That's private property.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Colonel! Can you possibly imagine what is going to happen to you, your frame, outlook, way of life, and everything, when they learn that you have obstructed a telephone call to the President of the United States? Can you imagine?! Shoot it off! Shoot! With a gun! That's what the bullets are for, you twit!!
Colonel "Bat" Guano: Okay. I'm gonna get your money for ya. But if you don't get the President of the United States on that phone, you know what's gonna happen to you?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: What?!
Colonel "Bat" Guano: You're gonna have to answer to the Coca-Cola company.

God I love that movie.

You are certainly not the first to recommend it to me - I have heard mixed opinions on the book. My concern is that my enjoyment from the film comes from it's unique vision of a totalitarian state and the satire that accompanies it which I believe is less of an issue in the book.

I enjoyed the animated series which I believe holds stronger ties to the novel and if I see it going cheap, I will certainly fling a few pennies it's way....

Beauty and the Beast.... A great movie, the only animated film ever nominated for an academy award. The Beast is a great star in his own right, slowly growing into a sensitive likeable person from a selfish mean fool. It is in IMAX, but no matter how you see it, even on tape or DVD, don't sell it short because it is Disney. It is a great film.

"It Happened One NIght" and" Arsenic and Old Lace-"-------Directed by Frank Capra, another person some of you might never have heard of...Most of us know him from "Its a Wonderful Life" which used to be played all the time around Christmas time, till Ted Turner, used a technicality to get it out of the public domain, and own it. If you haven't seen<"It's a Wonderful Life" you will love it too. One of my all time favorites about politics, "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" is another that I would strongly urge anyone to watch. That runs about two and a half hours, I remember showing it to inner city students, in a political science class a number of years ago....I was sure that they would get so bored that they would lose interest..It took three days to show it, but they loved it, it is so well directed, and the last 15 minutes are electrifying..

"Earth Girls Are Easy"...a candy-colored Californian comedic musical, with a dynamite cast (Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, Julie Brown, Michael McKean and Charles Rocket), a killer soundtrack (Hall & Oates, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Depeche Mode, the B-52s, Nile Rodgers, Stewart Copeland, Royalty, Jill Jones [performing a song that in the movie is done by Geena "Who knew she had that voice?" Davis], and Julie Brown), great cinematography (Oliver Stapleton), eye-popping locations (Deca Dance and the Curl Up 'N' Dye Salon have to be seen to be believed) and good direction (Julien Temple).

"Waste your brain, wax your board, pray for waves"

"Are we limp and hard to manage?"

"Why be with a hero when you can dance with a zero?"

"Here comes Dr. Love"

"Don't freak out. Promise not to freak out?"

My recommendations:

-- The Stunt Man (1980) A Vietnam vet on the run from the law hides out in a movie crew where he replaces the stunt man who was recently killed in an accident. If you like Peter O'Toole, you've probably already seen it. O'Toole is great, as is everybody else in the cast. This one gets better everytime I watch it.

-- Used Cars (1980) Kurt Russell plays a used car salesman who woant to get into politics. Excellent comedy.

-- Top Secret! (1984) The Zucker Brothers and JIm Abrahams, the guys who made Airplane, also made this comedy. It's great but I don't know many people who've seen it. IF Elvis PResley made a spy movie, this is the movie that would have made fun of it.

I agree with oldtoonguy and luckybob1985 that Arsenic And Old Lace is a must-see.
