...and it's the Usual (Nominated) Suspects:

Guess there's no hope of the "Simpsons" losing to Futurama or the Power Puff Girls (esp. considering the episode nominated, "HOMR"...). Hmph...

To quote Lisa Simpson, this awards show is the biggest farce I've ever seen!

Bar none. ;)

Best Commercial? Trashy "reality" shows eligible for nominations? Yi.

Well, SL will be happy to see her favorite PPG ep, "The Beat-Alls," made the cut. The 'Futurama' ep was one of the better ones of the season, too. But heck, we all know a "Best Animated Program" award doesn't really mean anything anyhow.

-C
Still says the funniest part of that "HOMR" episode was Dan Castelleneta's Lisa impression...

Yes, I definitely am!

Only problem is, now I'm gonna get ticked off if it doesn't win. There's no doubt in my mind that the 'Beat-Alls' script was genuinely witty and inventive. Unfortunately, only a Beatles-literate person could fully appreciate it, and it's doubtful all of the Academy members (or whoever is doing the voting) have that credential.

More like *when* it doesn't win---the "Simpsons" seems to have a virtual lock on this particular category for years now, no matter how pathetic an episode's been nominated (like "Trash of the Titans" awhile back)... thus, it pretty much doesn't matter what's running, or how good it is (I'd like to see that PPG ep myself, enjoying the Beatles' music and parodies of the Beatles)....as far as the Academy's concerned, the "Simpsons" is king of the hill (pun intended), and anything else can be ignored...

Ummm...is it rant time for Craig again?

...nah.

Let's just hope that with Scully leaving, I'll like it again too in September. Eternal optimist that I am.

-C
And if I *STILL* don't like it, then I'll have a full eight months to rant about it! It's a win-win situation.

Well, it's a pleasant way to let off steam...

Welcome to the Board, by the way! Always nice to see a new face (even if it is a hideously-disfigured sallow-eyed gaping-mouthed monster face!). Care to tell us a bit about yourself, interests, etc.?

-C
And, is anyone here actually having a hot summer? It's amazingly cool here on the East Coast...

It was good to see that the Academy nominated one of the few GOOD "Simpsons" episodes from this past season. I think we can all agree that this season has been the worst. It will be a tough race this year for animated program; two of the other nominees are among the funniest episodes ever of their respective runs: Futurama ("Amazon Women in the Mood") and The Powerpuff Girls ("Meet the Beat-alls").

It's also good to see some of my favorite shows ("That '70s Show", "The Drew Carey Show" - which has had a pretty weak year itself - and "Whose Line is it Anyway?") get nominations. Sure, most of them are technical, but nevertheless...

As for Emmy records: The Simpsons has been nominated for Outstanding Animated Program every year since 1995 (after the futile "submit it for Outstanding Comedy" debacle), and *has* won almost ever year since. The juggernaut was, however, stopped twice: in 1996, by our own Pinky & the Brain, and in 1999, by King of the Hill. This year, I'd probably count on The Simpsons winning, admittedly, although you never can tell with those wacky Academy members...I'm personally rooting for Futurama, simply because it might bring the show some much-needed recognition / respect. Not that I'm holding my breath.

They wouldn't know entertainment if it bit 'em in the--hey hey!

Your cool East Coast summer is a virtue of geography. Air currents from the Atlantic knock down the temperature a good 10-20 degrees or so. That's why Quito, Ecuador, despite being equatorial, keeps its temps in the 80s, gracias to the Pacific. Plus there's the mountain factor--offhand I don't know what ranges are up there, but they tend to damp down the sun's direct heat. That's why in AZ, temps get up to over 100 deg. F and palm trees grow along the street, but 150 miles away Flagstaff is surprisingly mild.
Arkansas, on the other hand, is a flat landlocked valley and holds in the heat like a pot holds in steam. Lovely tanning weather, barring rain or haziness....
As for The Simpsons, I still say "HOMR" had a good idea but sufffered from poor execution--same with "Day of the Jackanapes" and a couple of others. "New Kids on the Blecch" was just bad all around. And I'll be d***ed if I know why "Trilogy of Error" wasn't named....

Those mountain ranges are called the Andes. I hear there's actually snow on some of them. One of the few, or maybe the only, place you can throw a snowball across the equator.

As to Arkansas weather, I can vouch for that. Altho ultimately, you can't tell what it's gonna do from one day to the next here. Texarkana weather is the definition of unpredictable. I have seen people wearing shorts & tank tops in January, & I have seen it snow on the 4th of July, I kid you not. It's been years & years ago, & it didn't stick, shucks, it didn't even last to hit the ground, but it did snow.

So Mr. J. finally checks out this area. Well, just in case you get any ideas, Harley's with Brian now. Tho if I were Brian I'd be worried right about now. :)

Specifically, it's due to the Humboldt Current- the one that originates in Antarctica and flows straight up South America's west coast. This also accounts for the unexpectedly livable temperatures of the Galapagos Islands.

It's odd, which items picked up in Zoogeography class just stick with you.

I want to say a big "woo hoo" to the nomination of Wayne Brady in the Best Individual Performance in a Musical or Variety series category for "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" (right up there with P&tB for me). Although I would have rather seen Colin Mochrie get it, I'm still very happy for Wayne. Not that he has a chance in Summertime of getting it--he's up against Barbara Streisand (principally). But, anyway, congrats to Wayne on the nomination, and congrats to "Whose Line" for long overdue recognition!

O/T for The Siren:

You asked me to let you know when my PPG fanfic, 'The Mojo Dilemma', was up on the Storyboard. So just in case you hadn't noticed: it is.

Feel free to post any comments.

I did see that, SL. I will definitely try to ready it ASAP--I'm starting a new job, though, and I'm not online a whole lot right now. But as I said, I do want to read it, and I look forward to it.

And I will post comments, though I'm sure they will all be positive!

I'll get to it. If I do say so myself, I'm getting a reputation for my reviews on the TTAFF ml & in RoRos circles. However, I have a lot of stuff from the old boards to wade through first, never mind the stuff that's already on the new boards.

I adore the Beat-alls ep of the PPG! I think I laughed through that entire thing... perhaps it will beat the Simpsons after all...I mean what kind of rock do you have to live under to not know Beatles music? Maybe I shouldn't ask...

Well, when Meet the Beat-Alls first came on, there was indeed one poster that hadn't heard a lick of Beatles music, and as a consequense hated the episode with a passion. He was of the school that thought that ANY cultural reference was an egregious sign of weakness. He didn't seem to like much of anything, now that I recall. Wonder what happened to him...

Myself, I adored that ep.

Many award shows are kind to all the nice nice. No, I wouldn't like a vicious show: but smarmy smooze is boring. The awards also all seem convinced that the area they celebrate is HISTORIC, serious, significant, Ay Ar Tee. Every subject suffers. It's as if the Beatles had read a two hour speech before singing a love song.

Take the ceremonies out of those halls and theaters, into the fresh air. Not on an outside stage; but a park, or a traditional gathering area. Why not Venice Beach boardwalk, or the plaza of its namesake? A place used for flea markets, a stretch of beach, anywhere beautiful and lively.

Let the presenters be, not celebrities or authorities, but people who can actually speak well, people who take joy in speaking. We've suffered through too many <ha-ha>, too many <This is the highest award ever!>. Public broadcast should be a treat for the audience, not a compensation for the awardee. And tell each rhetor that he or she ought to speak as if they are late for a flight: clear, but brief.
