View Full Version : Warner cartoons on TCM - good? bad?

I've seen two or three threads lately in which the idea of Warner Bros. cartoons airing in some capacity on Turner Classic Movies -- an A-Oh-Swell-owned satellite network in the US and, I understand, much of the European Union -- was raised on one or another level. Ergo, I've decided to let those of you with TCM vote on the basic question of whether Warner theatrical cartoons should be carried (we'll thrash out possible formats afterward) on that network.

And yes, this is my first poll! :)

TCM would be a great home to cartoons that can be shown in its entirety, without edits, and in its proper perspective. It can be from WB, MGM, Paramount...whatever the case.

I know that TCM has an older audience, and I feel that putting cartoons there would result in much fewer complaints. After all, TCM has shown cartoons before on their network...but not many, to fill in for their "One-Reel Wonders" time slot between movies.

TCM should defintely air the Warner Bros. and the MGM cartoons on a regular basis during the "One Reel Wonders" segments inbetween their movies.TCM has been known to present cartoons before on their network.TCM is an adult channel (and how many little kids watch this channel ???)and it would perfect to air the more controverisal PIC cartoons during late night viewing hours, on the all classic movie channel. If TCM can show films (without disclaimers) such as: THE JAZZ SINGER, MAMMY, DIXIANA, THE SINGING FOOL, and BABES ON BROADWAY, which features Mickey and Judy in blackface, then there is no reason that TCM can't show these politically incorrect cartoons on their schedule.

I'M ALL FOR IT ...

who voted that it is a BAD idea. I feel very strongly about this. What is the purpose of airing cartoons if you have no idea when they will come on? I would miss them every time! Cargoon Networm might not usually show the rare cartoons, but at least they tell me what time the shows will be on. What TCM would do is sneak in a cartoon at the end of some movies. Since I have no interest in old movies, I wouldn't be around for the cartoon. This is just as bad as showing a rare classic cartoon during the Powerpuff Girls...

I could probably go on for an hour making these comments, but I think I'll stop here.

Steve, I don't know that the toons should be necessarily limited to the between-film periods; still, there isn't anything stopping TCM from either partitioning time slots either generically named "Film Shorts" (of whatever length) or (as I recall seeing for D-sn-y Channel on Gist.com once) identifying the short(s), if only so a separate TV-whichever rating can be generated for it/them (which could very possibly be a TV-PG or even TV-MA for, say, a 'Censored 11' member...) It can't be that hard...:)

To some extent I do agree with Sveven, it is very tuff to find out when a cartoon will actually air on TCM, but there is one way to find out if a cartoon will be shown.
TCM presents a monthly half hour show called "Festival Of Shorts" the bad thing is, it's the same program for the entire month.AMC does the same thing when they air cartoon during their "Short Cuts" segment, but the best time to catch AMC cartoons is during 5:30am thru 8am, mostly everyday on their schedule.
The cartoons the American Movie Classics presents are:
MAX FLEISCHER,/B] Betty Boop, Screen Songs, Color Classics

[B]GEORGE PAL PUPPETOONScartoon collection

[B]FAMOUS STUDIOS,/B]Casper, Blackie The Lamb, Screen Songs

This is were AMC has a big advantage over TCM, when it comes to showing cartoons on their classic movie channels.

Unfortunately, Amer Movie Channel does NOT have rights to the WB or MGM cartoons.

I think if AMC were to post the times when they show the U.M.&M./NTA cartoons, I think I would watch them more often.

BTW, Day 3 of my Georgia Trip. Brit and I are heading to Hartsfield this evening to pick up a client. Brittany's real excited. So am I. She's excited about going.

In the meantime, I can't watch CN, but at least I got Internet access. ;)
