Due to a tape trade, I have now seen almost every Buddy cartoon (I haven't finished watching the last few yet, I now HAVE them all.) They ARE NOT intolerable. Some are, but not all. Buddy is funny, to me anyway. You've got a nondescript little twerp, his girlfriend, an occasional dog, and some cartoony situations. Sure, Buddy has little personality, but his kind of comedy is situational, and the films are best taken one at a time, as they do tend to become monotonous. No, the only problem I see with Buddy is the same-ness of every cartoon. Those that are DIFFERENT are really funny. Also, the directors make a difference. The best were done by Friz Freleng and Earl Duvall, and it's no wonder, I think they are pretty much responsible for his creation. Ben Hardaway and Jack King don't shine here, though, they only have occasional highlights. What most critics overlook is that most of these directors would later do great things, this was their training-ground, they pretty much had a character that couldn't generate enthusiasm, so they gradually created gags to center AROUND him. Without Buddy, we may never have had Porky Pig, and without him the others too.In fact, there is great similarity between Buddy and the early Porky. Sort of. In fact, Buddy really reminds me more of Pee-Wee Herman than any other character I've ever seen, but he's much easier to watch than Pee Wee.

I don't think that Buddy is really all that bad as some people say he is. There are some pretty good Buddy cartoons out there.

BUDDY'S SHOWBOAT
BUDDY'S GARAGE
BUDDY THE G-MAN

These are my favorite Buddy cartoons....

I personally have no ill feelings towards Buddy, especially since he's a cartoon character. But I have seen almost all his cartoons and on the whole, they were okay. They aren't cartoons that I would watch over and over and I certainly don't regard them worthy enough to have in my collection.

My feelings are the same towards Bosko. To me, they are cartoons that just don't hold up to repeat viewings. They're cute and the Frank Marsales music is great, but Bosko on a whole is boring.

I'm sure my criticisms will become fodder for this thread, so please, feel free to bash me.

put him on your ignore list.

I feel that every classic WB cartoon is worthy of being in my collection, even if it is boring.

I always enjoyed Bosko more than Buddy. Bosko is funny, Bosko does things Buddy would run to his mommy to get out of doing. The thing with Bosko and Buddy is people tend to lump them together, but they are totally different characters. Bosko is a mischievous, happy-go-lucky, musical black kid, Buddy is a goody-goody, prozac-infused white kid. That does not make either character a total loss. We do care about each of them, they can each carry a plot and get laughs when they want to. Some people remark that because Buddy has no personality, the audience can't root for him. Why? I don't see a problem there. Buddy has some personality, but he doesn't NEED a personality, because, like Porky Pig, his surroundings do the work for him.
