to record a DVD movie onto a video tape?

Well, yes and no. Most DVDs are copy-protected. I learned that when trying to copy Stuart Little for my Nana, onto VHS. I tried doing that with Disney DVDs, but you know them. I don't know EXACTLY which ones, but the WB and DISNEY DVDs you CAN'T copy. I know you can copy public domain DVDs. Also, if anybody's interested, you CAN'T copy the MGM/UA LT&MM videotapes. However, I found it interesting that in a trade, I got the uncut "I Taw a Putty Tat" as bonus on the tape, but it was the 1986 VIDE-OH! version, which is copy-protected. Hmmm.....

A DVD salesman(at the WIZ) told me you can't record off of a DVD player to video cassette by saying, it's simply impossible to do so.Thank God you can record off a laser disc to a video cassette with no problems.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says "In every thing give thanks"
But is being able to record from laser disc to videotape something to really thank God for? If so it seems like it should be very very very far down the list.

Actually, the equipment I have can copy:
UA/MGM video tapes
Laser to tape
and
DVD to tape
Once the DVD player has created an A/V stream, it would seem that recording that stream onto another media should be simple. (but, then again, I have an audio CD that I can't copy - even on the ancient byte-copy device, so...)
for those interesed:
the DVD player is an Apex A600A
the recording deck is a JVC 7020BR, with AGC 'off'
(AGC = Anti-Copy Guard = Macrovision, et al = diddle with the video gain signal)

So you're saying you could copy a tape like "Just Plain Daffy"? Cool....

BTW, a LOT of people have had trouble copying the MGM/UA LT&MM titles, including me.

You are SUPPOSED to have trouble copying them - that's what the AGC circuit is there for.
Now you know the difference between a
VCR and a duplication deck.
(one ebay seller used to advertise his pretty-much-shot units as
'COPY RENTAL TAPES'
he has since dropped the word 'rental' - I suspect ebay had something to say about being so blatent...)
now, where's that jolly roger smilie?

Thanks, I never knew that. I don't know much about VCRs, except how to connect them to make duplicates.

Go Video -- the people who brought you the dual VCR deck back in the 1980s (and got sued over it) have a DVD/VHS VCR combo on the market right now that is supposed to be able to copy from the DVD onto the VCR.
So long as the DVD image is converted to analog for recording by the VCR, there really shouldn't be any problem. However, for a deck like that I think I'll wait a couple of years, until the DVD player is a recordable unit as well, so you can do transfers in both directions (good for putting your old videotapes onto a more permanent format)
I'm not sure WHY you'd want to video tape a DVD. The picture would still be only as good as VHS can get, meaning pretty crappy.
I guess if you were using it to tape a DVD rental that was due back before you had a chance to watch it...

Yeah, why would you want to record from DVD to VHS? Now that we can record on CD, why would we want to record on cassette tape?
Get the DVD player! You will not regret it, and recordable DVDs will be rather cheap for the mass market before you know it.
