This is as sad as it gets, folks.
In tonight's episode, Otto says "They call them fingers, but I never see them fing."
On an old episode of The Critic, Jay Sherman said "Here's one: They call them fingers, and yet they don't fing. Figure THAT one out."
SAME EXACT JOKE.
Thanks to Livingfruitvirus for pointing that out... that DUDE. Awesome awesome awesome! (You'd have to have seen Pilot Candidate to get what I mean)

You Know, Al Jean and Mike Reiss, Prolific Simpsons writers and producers created "The Critic" And James L. Brooks Served as the Exectuive Producer. Not Plagerisim when the creators are on the writing staff. Just lazy writers.

Still just as bad. Both plagerism & lazy writing speak of a significant lack of new/good ideas.
It's just sad that a show like Simpsons--that was so good & was always required viewing--has slipped to this point.

Tonights Ep as well as most of this current season has been kind of good and you cannot plagerize yourself. So this was not plagerism. Just laziness.
I wish every one would give it a rest... yeah yeah we know the older seasons were way better and the last few seasons have sucked but atleast they are making an effort to improve..and succeding. It's just a lot of people cannot let go of the past.
I want to see if we get the same thread Tuesday when they air the episode of Andy Richter Controls The universe where they use the same " Why Don't you call him Black(Insert name here) and call me (Insert name here) " joke used in Sealab 2021. It was in all commercials before the show aired and yet no one said anything.

On the Cartoon Cartoon Board (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24190), Koggit mentioned it.
Then in the Sealab chat, the Sealab creators mention it. (http://adultswim.toonzone.net/sealab-uneditted.html)

I actually thought tonight's ep was quite good, arguably the best of the season. I wish they'd go this route instead of bringing in guest stars each week. There's still a few 'issues' out there they can screw with :p

Jay didn't say that, Franklin (his father) did.

I thought this was the best ep so far this season. I Liked the whole Alcohol Legal/ Pot Not social commentary in Moe's bar with the evil of all evils, Carl.

It's plagiarism, not lazy writing. The two shows may have had some of the same people working on them, but the writers on "The Simpsons" now aren't the same writers that worked on "The Critic". They should stop making "The Simpsons" before it gets really bad...wait, too late.

It's neither plagarism nor lazy writing. It's called an inside joke and writers do it all the time.

Geez, who cares? Do you people just watch the episode LOOKING for something to complain about? I watched the Critic, and I don't remember an obscure joke they made on that show like 7 years ago or whatever.
Anyway, I liked tonight's episode, and even though everyone says the show sucks now, I still like it! Flame me if you wish, but unlike Comic Book Guy, I can't think of a time I've ever said, "Worst. Episode. Ever."

What I don't get it why the title was a parody of Weekend at Bernie's, but the actual plot element of the movie was only in the last five minutes--for my money the worst part of the episode, where it just sort of went downhill (the first two acts were okay). Burns' drowning in the tub because of a neglectful Homer and Smithers was actually reminiscent of a Dragnet ep, in which Friday and Gannon go on a call and discover a couple using marijuana in their own home. After basically saying it isn't so bad, the woman comes out of her stupor and realizes she's forgotten her baby in the tub for over an hour. She's too late; the infant is dead.
I don't know whether to call this a good parody of the attitude towards medical marijuana or just plain distubing--a joint in a bottle, a medical bong, Homer getting seized by the cojones and thrown around by a police dog.
Homer is correct; a group of birds is called a "murder"--but how does he know that? Maybe those language tapes did him some good after all. That whole first act with the garden and the crows was like Hitchcock meets A.A. Milne. Note the brand name on the seed bag--"Dirty Hoe".
Other funny bits--the Comic Book Guy Pop-Up Video, Homer's off-key rendition of "Smoke on the Water", and Ned Flanders' imitation of Chief Wiggum. Now I must ponder Homer's Jesus burrito query.
"For me, the sixties ended that day in 1978."
I think that's one of the hippies from the commune Homer visited looking for his middle name standing in the crowd at the weed rally.
Strangely ironic that Dr. Nick doesn't know what blood is (referring to his query on the "red stuff" coming from Burns' ear).
"Start inhalin', Waylon."

I almost thought they really would kill Mr.Burns! He was still "dead" when only one minute of the episode was left. That scared the hell out of me :P I thought it was funny, and I think the simpsons is still better than most anything else on tv, even in the worst episodes.
But you know something I feel pretty strongly about and havent really gotten around to saying? I think that the downfall is PART of the humor... you can tell that the creators are well aware of it ("THE SIMPSONS ARE GOING TO [etc.]") and work with it. Classic sitcoms always wound up ridiculous towards the end, and the simpsons special hosted by troy mclure made fun of that as well. In other words, I actually find it appropriate that the simpsons is getting downright ludicrous, and I think theyre doing at least some of it on purpose, to make fun of all the other shows that have met the same fate. There was an episode from the later season of "lassie" where timmy becomes radioactive from touching a meteor. Really. Some recent episodes of the simpsons have had many obscure references to these kinds of old shows.

Reguardless this was stilla good episode and YES people do sit around and look for things to complain about. I didn't remember the joke but it really shouldn't be an issue, I'm sure that the guys that came up with the joke just told the writers to use it as it was funnya ndw ould get more noatability from The Simpsons.

You know a lot more people have watched the Simpsons than the Critic. Those writers just wanted someone to hear their joke.

It was nice to see an original writer (whose last name isn't Swartzwelder) credited with a recent episode. Welcome back, Jon Vitti! Vitti was also a writer on "The Critic", a show that featured a countless amount of "Simpsons" personnel, so you could say that they stole from themselves.

What they Need to do is let Conan O' Brian write a few more episodes.. His episodes were always distinctly my favorite.

What Do you have aginst John Swartzwelder? He's written some of the funniest episodes!

I have nothing against Mr. Swartzwelder (even though he scripted the deplorable "Homer's Enemy"); I was just saying that he's been with the show for a very long time and that it was nice to see another older writer.

Homer's Enemy was far from deplorable. It shows what would happen if a man from our world were to live in Springfield. Frank Grimes had one of the funniest deaths I have ever seen.
