Hi guys!

My name is Kyle Hebert, a voice actor for Funimation Productions. I'm currently heard as teen Gohan and the Narrator on Dragonball Z, Ox King and General White on Dragonball, Sgt. Robert Bradley on Blue Gender, and Okubo on Yu Yu Hakusho.

I've been reading the glowing reviews of Yu Yu Hakusho here for weeks and just wanted to step up and introduce myself. You think the show's good now, you ain't seen nothing yet.

I wanted to cordially invite everyone to my website (www.kylehebert.com). Its no mere self-promotional vehicle. My webmaster, Steve Baptista, has created a full blown eye candy ridden and interactive site for fans of Funimation's shows and dubbing/voice acting. We cover Funimation, anime in general, toys, video games, movies, and is another fan-based community hangout. My site features the only place to nab many of the voice actor's e mail addresses (see the Funimation Station section). April is Yu Yu Hakusho month on my site, and we're giving away Volume 1 DVD uncut signed by the director and voice of Yusuke, Justin Cook!

Speaking of Justin, he just recorded an exclusive "audio commentary" style interview that we'll be posting on the site within the next week. He was generous enough to record 18 minutes of insightful info on the show and how Funimation works.

I feel extraordinarily lucky to be do live my dream of doing voices for animation and working on such wonderful shows as Yu Yu Hakusho. Make sure to stop by sometime and sign the guestbook. Hope to see ya there, and I"ll continue to drop in here.

Peace,
Kyle Hebert

Hey, welcome Kyle!

I have to say that I haven't had a chance to watch most of Yu Yu Hakusho, but I think you're doing a great job with Gohan on DBZ. Keep up the good work.

Yep, its me. I don't know who Kyle "Herbert" is, but he sure ain't me. Also, "Hebert" is pronounced "ay-bear". Wacky Cajun French thing. Heheh.

I think it'd be great, time permitting of course, if you could drop by and tell us little things about certain episodes as they air on Adult Swim. Things like which parts were particularly challenging, if anything got cut out, your thoughts/opinions of the episode, or just an interesting experience you had while working on the episode. I hope to see more posts from you in the future, and I'm glad that you've taken the time to check in with those who enjoy your work.

the dvd's come out on april 16th you say? you gotta be kidding, then what's this dvd im holding right now ??? (errrr...probably an early release or something)

anyway, i love your voice as teen gohan, question: do you get pissed when people say the dbz has a very bad dub AND when they say you suck as a VA?

question 2: what are your favorite animes? (assuming that you do watch anime besides the funimation properties)

Hey, I've seen you on the Planet Namek boards a bit, too.

Can you explain FUNimation's reasoning for bragging about having the most kids in "Adult Swim"? They're making Adult Swim look like a joke, and by marketing it to kids, they're simply endangering the block as a whole, which could in the long run hurt FUNimation as a company, as Williams Street may not like the way FUNimation is acting. If FUNimation was to continue dubbing animes, then, I wouldn't expect WS to consider them for Adult Swim, therefore meaning that if you did get it to air, it would be horribly edited and you'd be back where you started from.

So, basically, why does FUNi market YYH to kids if its on an "Adults only" block?

i heard about that, but i havent actually seen a statement from Funimation that they are marketing YYH towards kids, in fact, in yuyuhakusho.com (which i cant get into at the moment for some reason) , in the FAQ page, Funi reccomends YYH to teens ages 13+

Hey Kyle. Another Planet Namek suvivor joins us, and haven't you posted at Anime on DVD? I love your work on YYH and Dragon Ball and you're one of the few bright spots on DBZ. OK now it's question time for you. Of the Funi dubs I have seen(YYH, DBZ, and DB) why does it seem like the extra character voices on DBZ aren't even trying? On YYH and Dragonball, there seems to be an actual attempt to make all the characters sound good, but on DBZ it seems like they're just using bad accents for the hell of it(Gohan's enghish teacher comes to mind), now I'm all for accents(I actually liked the canadian police officer voice that was in DB), but in DBZ they just seem to overdo it. Besides that, and the low episode count on DBZ DVDs(which I know you have no control over) keep up the good work :)

BTW have you actually finished up the DBZ dub, and if not could you please tone down your narrator voice in DBZ? The narrator in DB is great, but the DBZ one just bothers me. Also please pass on the suggestion to Gen that for DBGT please keep the original soundtrack in tact like they did with Dragonball. We may have lost the great DBZ soundtrack in the english dub, but maybe we can bookend the series with work that is much better than anything dubbed DBZ had.

And still, 13+ isn't 18-34. They are supposed to be marketed to adults, not middle-schoolers.

It was boasted on the Yu Yu front page about the initial ratings. Not once did they mention 18-34 demographic, but they had no problem flaunting that Kids 6-17 were checking it out. It's not like they didn't sweep 18-34 either, because they got great ratings there too.

And still, 13+ isn't 18-34

if i remember correctly when i first bought the bebop videos ages ago, there was also a 13+ sticker on it. and last time i checked, all other shows on AS arent exactly for 18-34 either but lets not talk about that in here since this isnt the right thread.

to get back on topic, i want to ask mr. kyle hebert another question, what's your favorite AS comedy show?

Killtacular

The age stickers on video releases are determined by Suncoast/Best Buy/etc, not by the original company.

it doesnt matter who puts the sticker, i was just saying to kingkoopa that 13+ doesnt necesarily mean kiddie shows b/c bebop had it regardless of who put it

Fine. That doesn't mean at all that Bandai is marketing Cowboy Bebop for 13-year-olds. They don't go around saying "Yay! Go us! Our program is popular with kids!". They're aware of their target audience. A sticker on a DVD case that says that its "reccommended for people 13+" means nothing. Guess what: Cowboy Bebop has a TV-14 rating. Does that mean that WS is marketing it to 14-year-olds? Of course not. Its intended for adults, regardless of rating.

Funny how on TV it needs the same rating as the DVD, yet still requires editing.

Excellent suggestion, though I wouldn't have the insight that the director (Justin Cook) would. The actors are recorded separately and only see the footage for their respective scenes as they dub them. My work as Kuwabara's friend, Okubo, was pretty minor.
But I do some bit parts here and there and scored a really cool villain role for later in the series. Regardless, I do intend on dropping by from time to time. Thanks again for the welcome!

Thanks for the compliments! I don't get mad when people dislike the dub. After all, everybody has a right to their opinion. Good and bad are totally subjective. I admit it stings a bit to get a bad review, but I've learned to let it slide off rather quickly. You can't please everybody. I've been a VA for a year and a half and despite anyone's reviews, I'm having the time of my life.

Favorite animes, in no particular order:
Cowboy Bebop, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Gundam, Tenchi Muyo, Inu Yasha, Robotech, Star Blazers, Battle of the Planets, Evangelion, Escaflowne

I wouldn't say they were bragging. Getting other groups to watch outside the target demo is icing on the cake. Yu Yu will have an edited version available for the mass public, but the DVDs will be totally uncut, even more so than Adult Swim. That way, everybody gets their cake and can eat it too. The show is definitely being marketed to an older crowd than DBZ.

I see you get around. Yes, I post from time to time over at Anime on DVD.com. Thanks for the compliments. The minor characters are given accents simply because the director, Chris Sabat, makes that kind of choice. The minor characters are always goofy looking with goofy dialog. He makes the call to go ahead and milk the comedy (whether that pays off or not is totally subjective).

I know as much as anyone else that my Narrator voice is hopelessly cheesy, but when Dale Kelley left, I was picked to carry on his footsteps, and for the show's consistency's sake, they're sticking with the "monster truck announcer" approach.
I don't complain, since its more work for me. Heheh.

No word yet on whether GT's original soundtrack will remain intact. I know the fans love that DBs' music was left alone, and so if Yu Yu's. Time will definitely tell.

Peace,

Funimation VA You don't seem to understand. It's not really icing on the cake, its more like ants on the cake. By airing YYH on Adult Swim, the shows really shouldn't be watched by kids. They're making AS look like a joke, like some kids block passing off as an adult block. It sends advertisers away because the ones who would target adults think adults don't watch it, kids do, and kid advertisers think that kids shouldn't be watching, because they're made for adults. It hurts the network, the fans of the block, and others.

I'm not saying you should change the show, I just think you shouldn't go around saying "We got the most kids!".

and

Yeah Kyle, are you doing any work on Fruits Basket? I never heard of this show till Funi acquired it, and it'll be interesting to see what it's like. Is it Adult Swim fare or can it be on earlier if you know(I know it's not for Toonami though)

One more thing. Do you currently watch Adult Swim, and if so, what do you think the next anime to be added to the block(the saturday one). My bet is on Trigun, but I'm just curious what a famous person like yourself thinks :D Also don't worry about people saying that the DBZ dub is bad, just look at Pilot Candidate and (yuck)Cardcaptors :p

Last thing. Thank you for being the first person(that I can't think of anyways) that is a representative to a company that posts on the boards(take a lesson form this Cartoon Network/Williams Street, Bandai, Pioneer, etc.) If Funi can have an employee post on the boards, why can't you?

Yeah I think it is just two versions of YYH floating around(edited and uncut,no AdultSwim edition),but I think FUNi should give CN the unedited YYH for WS to edit because in the future CN wants to have all their show's upgraded to the TV-14 standard but because FUNi is just giving them the cut version they will never be able to give it the TV-14 rating it deserves..

Not gonna happen. Williams Street has pretty much retired from editing and is leaving it up to the distributors. Mr. Demarco (producer of the Tenchi edit) did mention though that they will edit a show if "we feel we are the only ones who can do the show justice." IOW, very rarely.

I appreciate your point of view, though I REALLY don't see how this is such a big deal. I am merely a voice actor for Funimation, not anyone with power, so I cannot speak for them in defending any sort of press release statistics that you've interpreted as harmful.

The fact remains, the show is coming out in multiple versions to cater to ALL demos. Like with DBZ, the videos will be clearly labeled. Any responsible parent will be able to tell the difference.

I didn't notice any lack of commercials during Yu Yu Hakusho. Nobody is being scared away. Trust me.

Well, I certainly hope I'll continue to be Gohan. I know he's not terribly involved in GT, so maybe I can land some other roles in the meantime.

As for a dream role......hmmm.....I would have loved to be in Akira, Evangelion, Escaflowne, and Inu Yasha (which is coming this summer).

Welcome to the boards Kyle, great to see someone from the industry participating on these boards so much. I'm sure you'll add a lot to the discussion, as you always do on the other boards :)

Give my regards to Justin Cook for the great direction on YYH. I absolutely loathe the DBZ dub and consider it one of the worst I've ever heard, but the YYH dub clearly shows that you guys who work for FUNI do have talent. I just hope Sabat never directs another dub again for FUNI, I think the critical acclaim will be in a much higher magnitude without him at that position. -_-

have heard bad stuff about Pilot Candidate

LoL, seems like you got some good advice. Consider yourself lucky that you're not viewing that piece of garbage ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome! Actually Justin closely monitors this board and many others. He chooses to remain private, whereas I prefer to be more vocal. I'll certainly do my best to answer any questions to the best of my ability when I stop by.
Justin's exclusive audio interview on my website this week
(part 1 is already up, and new parts will be added daily, 9 total!)
gives alot of great insight into YYH.

I totally appreciate all the support that YYH is getting. Justin and the whole Funi crew are totally passionate about making this thing rock from the get go. I certainly think they've done it, and I'm a huge fan of the show. Thanks again!

Peace,
Kyle

Sorry, no relation. "Hebert" is a common name in Louisiana.
Of course the incorrect Texas pronunciation seems to be "HE-bert". DOH!

Hey there, Jared! I was born in Lake Charles, LA. I'm afraid we aren't related, since ya know "Hebert" is a common last name there. I guess you've said I'm more like a native Texan, since I've lived in Dallas since I was 3 months old. Great t hear from a fellow Cajun though!

I have seen DBZ for a while... I have to say the dub is getting better as the series continues on.....

I have a question--- Is Funi going to redub the first season of DBZ which Saban did a long time ago?

What motivated you to do dubbing for companies like Funi?

What classes did have to take in High School to have a carrier as dubber for a company?

As YYH - it's really good show-- Keep it up and Funi will probably receive the respect it deserves... I think Blue Gender *I haven't seen but heard has a good dub* and YYH are are better part of Funimation's dubbing IMO.

PS Welcome to Toonzone's boards and thank you for answering our questions.

I certainly hope I can do voices on Fruits Basket. I'm happy to do any voice work for Funimation. Its been a total blast!

Thank you for the answers.

Thanks for the welcome! Glad you're enjoying YYH and I highly recommend Blue Gender as a hard edged sci-fi thriller. That series also gets better as it goes along.

Funi is definitely considering redubbing those first episodes, though I don't know when or if the uncut versions would be done (that would mess with the numbering system, since those first dubbed episodes started later in the Japanese series)

Funimation is in Ft. Worth, Texas, wh ich is about 35 minutes away from me, so it was a no brainer as to which anime dubbing company to try to get in with. I have a degree in radio/tv/film from the University of North Texas. Didn't have any formal acting training (wish I did), but I do alot of character voice stuff in my radio career. I consider myself very lucky to be able to do what I've always wanted to do.

My advice for high school is to take drama, since there's no classes in voice acting. There are also books available on technique (www.voiceacting.com).

Take care,
Kyle

Damn Kyle you sure are polite and helpful. =) Kudos to you; heaven knows there's no bigger let down than having a cool famous person turn out to be a total ass.
Ah-ney-way...I have a small question. From a VA's point of view, did the new Sailor Moon dub totally outshine the DiC dub or not? As much as people hate DiC I will defend it in the sense that they had way better VA's than the new dub did. Serena/Usagi's voice made me shudder whenever she opened her mouth.
I also recommend that you check out Adult Swim Comedy, tonight from 10pm to 1 am (or so)...there's no anime there, but, it's an incredibly funny block of cartoons.

Thanks for the compliments! I haven't seen enough of Sailor Moon to judge the dub job (my 5 year old daughter watches and loves the show) I've been told that the comedy stuff on Adult Swim rocks. I really want to see "Eltingville" (is that what its called), the story of comic book geeks.

Well, if you've seen it air on Adult Swim, it has mild language and as the show goes on, it does get pretty bloody. The uncut DVD has slightly more than what than even what Adult Swim allows as the series progresses. Nothing too over the top though. The edited will have no blood or profanity at all. This is being done in an attempt to reach as wide an audience as possible.

Thanks,
Kyle

Hey, Kyle!

Welcome! Heard that you showed up over at the Toonami Board. That you do the voice of the Narrorator and Gohan's pretty damned impressive.

You do good work. Personally it took me about a season to get used to Sonny Strait as Krillan, but he quickly became one of my favorites, due in no small part to the research I heard he did in an interview.

You got Teenage Gohan in one shot.

Keep up the goodwork and watch out for rabid fanboys!

Hey Kyle, I was wondering if you have any good outakes from YYH, DBZ, or Dragonball. If you've ever heard the Thundercats outakes, those were hilarious http://www.claws-and-paws.com/thundercats/index.shtml#outtakes (Note: these are very uncensored, so kids make sure mommy and daddy are out of the room before listening) :D

Funi should consider doing an outakes reel on one of their DVDs. DBZ would be great, because I collect them(I whine about the low episode count, and slow release schedule, but I collect them. Go fig :p ), but some for YYH would be great when I pick those up down the line. I know its not unprecedented(Kenshin is the only one I can think of that includes outakes), so I'm sure they keep them for some laughs around the office at Funi. If not as a DVD extra, how about putting some up on your site?

The actors screw up all the time, but outtakes aren't saved at this time. I wish they were, because I've heard alot about some classic blunders. Thanks for the link to Thundercats bloopers!
DVD extras for DBZ apparently isn't in the contract Funi has with Toei, but I don't know if its totally out of the question for YYH.
There are some small cool extras to be included in each volume, so who knows?

And, I already asked about saving outtakes and playing them on my site. I got a BIIIIIIIIG "nope". Heheh.

Can you ask the higher ups why there are no inserts on the DBZ DVDs? I've been wondering about this for a while now. how hard is it to put a piece of paper that names the chapters in the DVD case? It may not make up for the low episdoe count, but it's a start. also do the YYH DVDs contain inserts, or is Funi continuing it's "tree-friendly" DVD process(I hope not, it's not a good day unless a forest is chopped down to make DVD inserts :D :D :D )

Last thing, any word on Dragonball's DVD release? I know it's going to happen, but since Planet Namek went under it seems like there's less DB/DBZ Funi news coming out. Haven't they ever heard of Anime on DVD (http://animeondvd.com)?

It may be considered a cost issue, or an assumption that most of the DBZ audience are kids that don't care about inserts. I don't know for sure, since I'm not connected with any decisions made.

Unfortunately, I don't know anymore than anyone else about the DB discs. Trust me, as soon as I do, I'll plug it on my site. ''

I read up on your site about your roles. I felt as if you were growing into your role as a narrorator, but then I read that you had the talent all along, but had to gradually change from the old announcers style. I now have even more respect for you as a voice actor.

I have a 2 questions for you, wasn't Chris Sabat working on a site of his own called FreshOakra.com or something? I can't seem to remember the URL, and I was curious if it was up yet. Also, have voices been cast for Lupin the T and Fruits Basket, and are you one of them?

The main DBZ audience probably is kids, but I don't think the kids are the ones buying the DVD's. And I don't think they would have such an overwhelming 6-11 audience if they would cater to the older fans as well.

I really wish FUNi would get a couple test groups, one with parents, and a few different age groups. Then ask their opinions on what should be changed, and what they find acceptable. I heard they were going to send tapes to certain anime fanclubes and ask their opinion of what should be changed, but I havn't heard anything about it since then. It sounded like a good idea.

Bah. I'm babbling in the wrong spot and off-topic. The intention of this post was to tell you good work and ask about Sabat's site. My little off-topic-mini-rant wasn't to you, I just got carried away.

Hi there! The extras will be more than on the Z releases, as in, more than just trailers for the other shows. Textless openings, character bios, and other little goodies on down the line that director Justin Cook is remaining mum about. Oh, there's dvd inserts too!

Hey Kyle what do you think of Funimation's latest acquisition Lupin The 3rd?

[indent]Thanks for the YYH information Mr. Hebert! If you have a chance there is also a Toonami board here at Toonzone and there are many DBZ fans over there who would love to here from you. I'll be looking forward to hearing Karasu.

Wow! I am very surprise. I really thought that Kuwabara's voice was done by the same man as the voice of the Ox King. I would never guess that the voice for teenage Gohan is from the same man who gives the voice for the Ox King. I think the it takes a considerable amount of talent to change your voices. I am very amaze. Also, do you have any other part for Yu Yu Hakusho? I would love to here your voice often in that series.

Well, given the critical acclaim the Lupin series has gotten over the years, I'm really psyched to have Funimation atttached to it. I personally haven't seen any of the shows/specials. Actors don't get to see the show ahead of time. We only record our respective scenes, but our first Lupin release coming out April 30 already has a glowing review on Anime On Dvd.com's dub review column. I'm anxious to see it too!

Peace,
Kyle

Actually, I should clarify that Chris Sabat (Kuwabara) IS Ox King on DBZ. I do Ox King on Dragonball. I think that just happened due to a schedule crunch, but whatever the reason, I'm happy to do Ox King. Thanks for your compliments and support! I'm heard early on as Okubo in Yu Yu Hakusho and will eventually voice the villain Karasu.

Peace,
Kyle

Kyle, I highly reccomend you check out the Lupin the 3rd movie "Castle of Cagliostro", which you can find on Region 1 DVD subbed and dubbed from Manga Entertainment.. It's considered an anime classic, and it's done by Hayao Miyazaki, universally recognized as one heck of a director (a couple of his movies have even popped up on Roger Ebert's "The Great Movies" list, alongside such classics at 2001 and Citizen Kane). It's a pretty cool caper movie. It's a shame Funi doesn't have the rights to it, because we sure could use a better DVD than the bare-bones one Manga released

Here's a good question for you Kyle.

What inspired you to become a voice actor?

Yeah, I'm aware of Castle of Cagliostro but haven't seen it yet. Manga still owns the rights, so we couldn't dub that one again. I'll make sure to check it out. Thanks for the tip though!

Mel Blanc, the voice acting king, legendary genius behind all the classic Warner Bros. toon voices. That man is my idol. I knew from the time I was a kid, that THAT was what I wanted to do.

Funi's press release on FB: http://www.dragonballz.com/html/news/fruity/

I watched almost half the series fansubbed before funi licenced it, and I have to say it's a well done, light, fun series that has a bit of dark side at times too. It's definetly a change of pace for Funi (it's very much a shoujo series), but one IMHO, I think they can handle. I can't wait for this to be released on DVD.

I've seen episode 1, and I'm very intrigued and looking forward to the series and Funi's handling of it.

Rock on!

Hey Kyle. JbHustler didn't answer the question I asked him on the first page of this topic, so I'll ask you. What does JbHustler do at FUNi besides checking message boards?

And I probably said this to you already at Planet Namek, but I think it's great that you're constantly visiting message boards to chat with the fans. It's something I feel more voice actors should do.

I'll admit, I'm bad with names so I couldn't begin to tell ya waht JbHustler does at Funi (he'll probably kill me for forgetting, hehe).
Thanks for the support! Fan interaction is something I feel is very important. I always make sure to report whatever the vibe is on various things to the different directors of Funi's shows and they're very appreciative. I know that other actors are simply too busy to get involved with message boards. Its not that they don't care. I'm just one of the few (perhaps the only) who can afford some time daily to devote to this kinda thing.
